autopsys and Diabetic ketoacidosis?

if you are a 40 year old man and you are a doctor and you have had diabeties for 20 years and always took care of your self(took shots) what are the chances of dieing from Diabetic ketoacidosis?. the better understand here is what happened my father passed away the medical examiner said it was Diabetic ketoacidosis but my father never missed a shot and plus he was a doctor. he died and my mother was next to him the who time should she of known something was wrong? would he produce signs to warn her? anyway i called the ambulance and began to do cpr and when i presed on his chest blood came out of his mouth. the medicalexaminer did not do a autopsy . should she of? i just dont understand why an autopsy was not preformed and why blood came out of his mouth and could there of been foul play involved? should i check in to it. remember hewas a doctor and most 40 year old doctor dont just die from not taking a shot espically when they havd delt wiht it for years. in my opinion please help
----------

you don't need an autopsy. your father died, and that's that. he wasn't murdered. an autopsy would have said he died from medical complications.

diabetic ketoacidosis can occur from a variety of things, including infection and heart attack. The blood coming out of his mouth could be from infection or trauma. you don't mention what your father was doing before he passed away--was he exercising, was he sick, did he have a history of heart attack, etc.

finally, i know a lot of doctors. tehy don't take care of themselves very well even though they know they should. in faacct, many of them are take caer of themselves poorly. it's like the guy that works at a mcdonalds but can't eat mcdonalds because he's tired of being aroudn it all the time. same thing with doctors--they're always talking about health, so when it comes to them, they don't really bother.  (+ info)

help. i think my mum has Diabetic ketoacidosis and need some urgent advice on a bad situation?.?

my mum has type 1 diabetes.. she first got diagnosed by having reallly bad Diabetic ketoacidosis and brink of death.
to sum it up and keep this short.

she refuses to often take insulin.. she has 2 take it 3 times daily but only takes it once daily because she says it hurts . and she doesnt take her other meds for thyroid and heart condition.. she is very stubburn. she doesnt like medical treatment either. refused to go doctors for the last 3 months for a check up.

she eats what she likes. she eats chocolate buscuits, fruit juice, fruit, softdrinks on a daily basis.

she thinks because she doesnt feel sick that its ok. she has also stopped checking her BGL. explained above.

i try tell her to do the right thing but it ends up in a daily fight so i stopped because it never works.

she is very stubborn.. she has now had a bad tummy ache for the last hour and has vomited once.
she has not passed any urine.

i cannot call her doctor because its 6am on a sunday and her doctor doesnt even open on sundays.

what can i do?

Call 911. NOW. Tell them she's a brittle type 1 diabetic and she's sick and they'll be right over. It might just be she ate something a little spoiled, but you can't take chances with diabetes, especially type 1. She sounds possibly dehydrated. Call NOW.  (+ info)

a. a low blood pH
b. urine ketones
c a low urine pH
d. weight loss
c. all of the above
----------

i know b and d, also a fruity smelling breath is a sign of ketones as well as vomiting and having stomach pains.  (+ info)

cAN diabetic Ketoacidosis in adults cause brain damage?

iam just asking because firstly my mum first got diagnosed with diabetes because of getting Ketoacidosis wich the doctors and i assume she had for at least a few weeks because she lost round 10kgs and she had symtoms of uti for 2+ weeks. anyway she ended up vomiting for 48 hours and i thought it was food poisoning at first because she did not tell me of other symptoms of chest pain etc wich i think would scare me. anyway she had to be in ICU for 2 weeks nd the first 2 days in hospital the doctor said they are unsure how she'd go and that she might die and if she goes through the first 2 nights then she'd live because the treatment is working. iam not sure if she blacked out but i know she was extremely tired mainly because of not sleeping and vomiting for 48 hours straight and she'd dose off every now and then and the doctors would wake her up and get her to open her eyes. anyway passs on 6 weeks later. she missed her insulin and got it again except this time we got it earlier. she only had vomiting for 15 hours and the reason why i didnt call the parametics sooner was because she wouldnt let me due to having paranoia, will explain below, 2nd time she still had to go icu again for 2 days only this time.

the reason i ask this is because ever since her first Ketoacidosis, ive noticed she's been having memory problems wich i didnt notice prior to it. its just more noticeable and its not really bad. e.g once in awhile she'll think today is friday instead of thursday or she'll forget an apointment she made 1 week prior. also since she first got home from the 1st 2 week icu hospital stay, she's been having paranoia thinking ppl are spying on her from the very first day she got home and there are cameras in our rooms and think ppl are talking about her or out to get her. example, we go grocery shopping and she tells me every1 in the store all the shoppers are staring at her and treating her wierdly like they are spying on her and a few days ago, she told me she ate ALOT for dinner and she overheard the woman in the nxt building yelling out what a pig around the time my mum went for 2nds for dinner and thought it was aimed at her and that the woman in the next house can see her through a spy camera? lol.we live in a 3rd floor apartment and next to us that woman yelling is in a house nxt door. the doctors dont know this as obviously she would not tell anyone about this including her friends because she thinks they are all in on it. the 2nd short hospital stay the doctor did get a phsycologist to see her but again the phsycologist found nothing wrong because she would just try act normal and not trust/tell the pshycologist the real truth.

i know during her first 2 week icu stay she had scans and saw a Neurologist but i have no idea what type of scans or what they did as it was abit hush, hush in what they did closed doors as they didnt tell me much and my mum was pretty out of it so she wouldnt tell me and the nurses pretty much shooed me to go home and come back a few hours later saying they need to do some tests.
btw she is only 49 yrs old.

In Diabetic Ketoacidosis, is vomiting the cause or a symptom?

My fiance is Type 1 Diabetic for 8 years he is 26 years old. Lately he has not been checking his blood glucose and eating a lot of junkfood and drinking some beer at night (although none of this is out of the ordinary) whenever he did check his blood glucose it was either ridiculously low (like 40) or ridiculously high (like 400).

This morning, he woke up suddenly with a dry mouth. He had a funky smell to his breath.

when he took in some water, he immediately began to vomit up the water along with some brownish, small flakes and specks. I am assuming this is blood....

Anyway I called 911 and had him admitted and he is now in ICU for high ketones in his blood and insulin stabilization.

I would like to know..... COULD THIS HAVE BEEN BECAUSE OF POORLY CONTROLLED DIABETES? Or could this have happened due to a stomach bug?

Thank you for any helpful info!
BTW.... he is so stubborn. I really tried to get him to control his sugar lvls better, but he wouldn't and he needed this wake up call I guess.
ALSO he uses an insulin Pump and relies wayy too heavily on it.
this morning after vomiting his glucose was 367....

Hello Nova! I am so sorry to hear about your fiance's condition. Hopefully I can help clear some things out to you about DKA (Diabetic Ketoacidosis).

First, what you described as "brownish, small flakes and specks" sounds a lot like vomit called "coffee-ground emesis". I've seen several type 1 diabetic patients admitted to the ER having had coffee-ground emesis and were progressing further into DKA. This specific sort of vomitus, along with other various upper GI bleed signs & symptoms, are commonly known signs associated with DKA.

"COULD THIS HAVE BEEN BECAUSE OF POORLY CONTROLLED DIABETES?"
Absolutely-- especially when I take into consideration your description of your fiance's diet and noncompliance towards his disease management.

"Lately he has not been checking his blood glucose and eating a lot of junkfood and drinking some beer at night (although none of this is out of the ordinary)."
As you know, his diet GREATLY influences his chances of experiencing complications of his disease-- DKA being one of them. **You should know that DKA is caused primarily by dehydration, and that both junk food and beer only worsen the severity of dehydration. They also contain carbs which are broken down by the body into glucose (bad!). Junk food typically has tons of salt and carbs. Beer not only contains carbs, but also inhibits your body's secretion of a very important fluid regulating hormone called ADH. Ever notice that when you drink, you tend to have to pee a lot? ADH is like the flood gates to your urination, and is able to keep all your fluid within your body so long as it is present. Without it (like when you drink alcohol), you will urinate more fluid than you can take in by drinking.

It seems to me that your fiance's diet and lifestyle thoroughly predisposed him to DKA. DKA is extremely dangerous, and I've seen relatively active patients go down fast after being admitted. Please teach him to adhere to the lifestyle modifications necessary for his health maintenance. Lifestyle modifications are typically the area of treatment in which diabetic patients express having the most difficulty, and I've noticed it is because of inadequate patient teaching-- the patient simply does not have the information he needs to go out and make informed decisions to better his health.

I sincerely wish you both the best!  (+ info)

What would cause Ketoacidosis in a non-diabetic person?

NOT starvation.

I have several health issues, and am currently doing some research into some of the more serious things that have happened to me medically in the past three years. About three years ago I was feeling sort of run down and tired. I thought I was just bummed out about my husband heading out to sea. I went to bed early one night, and woke up at seven the next morning feeling extremely confused and sick to my stomach. I began vomiting, and by three that afternoon my breathing was sort of shallow, and I was so weak I couldn't walk. I called a neighbor who brought me to the emergency room.

I ended up passing out and having a seizure according to one nurse, another nurse just says I passed out. (The hospital is trying to cover up a mistake they made. They tried to release me after one IV and some anti-nausea medication, but I passed out in the waiting room before I could even call a cab).

Anyways, I was later admitted to the hospital in a severe state of ketoacidosis. I guess my blood and urine were testing at the highest possible level for ketones. After three days of IV treatment, and specialized diet, they got my ketones down to level two, and discharged me. I had to pee on keto-sticks for a month to make sure that the levels stayed down, and they eventually went away.

I was looking over the hospital records and the official diagnoses was, "Anorexia and bullemia leading to an incidence of starvation induced ketoacidosis." I am neither anorexic, nor bullemic. Yes, I was throwing up that day, but I woke UP sick. I'd eaten just fine the day before, and days prior. My kidney values were out of whack, they said due to severe dehydration.

I haven't had an incidence since, but I do have days when I feel somewhat like I did that day. I am careful to drink A LOT of water, or I get deyhdrated. I also eat every couple of hours so I don't feel weak and dizzy. I am just so aggravated. It doesn't make sense to me that I could wake up with some sort of "bug" at seven, and by three in the afternoon be that far into a ketone ridden state!
----------

"Anorexia" doesn't mean you have an eating disorder, it just means "not eating". If a doctor is referring to an eating disorder, they call it "anorexia nervosa". My understanding is that the word "bulimia" DOES refer specifically to the eating disorder. However, the correct term for that is bulimia nervosa, so there is a chance that whoever wrote the hospital report just meant "not eating and throwing up", which can cause ketosis.

When the body doesn't have enough carbohydrate stores, it breaks down fat to use as energy. This is where the ketones come from. In someone who is vomiting and unable to eat, you'd expect to see some ketones. However for the levels to be very high, you would usually either have to be diabetic (where your body is 'blind' to the glucose that is there) or have drunk a lot of alcohol (can cause ketosis) or be hypoglycaemic - low blood sugar. Was your blood glucose measured at the time? It's interesting that you say you eat regularly so you don't feel weak and dizzy - maybe you are hypoglycaemic?  (+ info)

Distinguish between diabetic ketoacidosis and HONK.?

To answer your question simply, HONK is just a change in the osmotic pressure of your blood due to increased blood sugar. The acidity of your blood is not affected because lipolysis is not being performed. In DKA, however, the body must perform lipolysis in order to survive, which increases the acidity of the blood. Below, i will explain further.

HONK is "hyperosmotic non-ketotic acidosis". Ketosis is absent in HONK because the presence of some insulin inhibits lipolysis (the conversion of fat to energy), unlike diabetic ketoacidosis which happens in the presence of very little to no insulin at all.

HONK basically just causes severe diuretic conditions in the body which case frequent urination, and causes the blood to thicken, and become more viscous. This in turn increases the osmotic pressure of your blood. The body is still able to synthesize energy from carbohydrates using the amount of insulin that it is provided. Since it does not have to perform lipolysis on a large enough scale to cause ketones to acidify the blood, it is not considered the same as diabetic ketoacidosis. Ultimately, if untreated, HONK will lead to death, just as DKA will.

Symptoms of HONK:
-Hyperviscosity and increased risk of thrombosis
-Disturbed mentation
-Neurologic signs including focal signs such as sensory or motor impairments or focal seizures or motor abnormalities, including flacidity, depressed reflexes, tremors or fasciculations.

Symptoms of DKA:
-Sluggish, extreme tiredness.
-Extreme thirst, despite large fluid intake.
-Constant urination
-Fruity smell to breath, similar to nail polish remover or peardrops.
-Hyperventilation, at first rapid and shallow, then progressively deeper and less rapid.
-Extreme weight-loss.
-Oral Thrush may be present, or/ yeast infections that fail to go away, this is because the normal fungal/flora present in oral cavity/cervix in women, the balance is upset and bacterial began to feast on the high sugar from urine output/ dry mouth from extreme thirst.
-Muscle wasting.
-Agitation / Irritation / Aggression / Confusion  (+ info)

type 1 diabetic and sick. afraid about ketoacidosis!?

ive had a stomach virus for the past week (no vomitting) and i have had small ketones and traces of ketones for the past 3 days. my blood sugar was in the 400's but now mostly low 300s and high 200s. Ive been having some symptoms of ketoacidosis. like heavy breathing, ketones, high blood sugar, dizziness, and i woke up in the night so thirsty and i felt dehydrated, that weird "sweet" breath thing (although it dont taste sweet) also having to go to the bathroom a lot more than usual. how do you legit know if you have ketoacidodis? i called my endo and he said to call back if my ketones are moderate/large. i feel so sick and ive been staying home from school. help??
----------

Some ketones after fasting is common in non diabetics so don't panic about small ketones. So if they are mod/large you need to be concerned.
You shoulsn't go to school stay home.
If you can bring your blood glucose down it with help. BVaking soda with likely make you vomit so I woulsn't do that. The acidosis is a consequence of the raised sugar and requires insulin  (+ info)
