What are the signs of deafness / hearing impairment in an unborn baby?

My 37 week old unborn baby does not startle to loud noises or seem to respond with a direct response to sounds.

We have no family history of hearing problems on either side of the family. However, this is my 3rd pregnancy. The baby's responses are noticeably different than the first two.

Does anyone know any of the prenatal signs of deafness or a hearing impairment?
----------

hmm, i tried google for some info about this and i just can't find it. i don't think there's any way to know if a child is deaf in the womb. sorry but i think you're just going to have to wait and see! best wishes  (+ info)

How can i get rid of ringing and deafness in my ear from an ear infection?

I got an ear infection 2 weeks ago and was put on antibiotics. After 1 week i had to go back to the doctor when there was no improvement and was put on stronger ones. This course has now finished but i still am suffering with a ringing in my ear, deafness and it's driving me mad!! Any suggestions on how to get rid of it??
----------

That happened to me and it was weeks before my hearing was back to normal. I started to worry about it all of the time and even went beck to the doctors for it. The doctor told me that it sometimes happens and to give it time. Eventually it just came back on it's own. Hope you feel better though. :)  (+ info)

What are the possible causes of deafness in children that can be treated with a cochlear implant?

I'm looking for diseases or causes that cause deafness in children, but can also be treated with a cochlear implant or any other type of surgery.
I appreciate any information that you can give me on the topic of deafness in children.
I will award the 'best answer' to whoever provides the most relevant and helpful information.
Thank you!
----------

Basically anyone with profound hearing loss that has a properly formed cochlea and properly functioning auditory nerve will probably be a candidate for a cochlear implant. People who lost their hearing due to CMV, rubella, meningitis (if implanted within weeks of onset of illness), genetic factors, Rh factors, or premature birth can probably be eligible for a cochlear implant.  (+ info)

A man has severe to profound deafness in one ear.His other ear is normal. Can he get the facilities 4 disabled?

26 year old Raju lives in W.B., India. His deafness in his right ear is probably caused by a mumps attack 15 years ago.He hears normally in his left ear. Is he entitled to have the facilities for the hearing handicapped(disabled)? What are the exact rules for determining the percentage and level of disability for hearing handicapped?
----------

Well I don't live in India but I am profoundly deaf in one ear...if he has any hearing at all left in his bad ear then I suppose he might benefit from a hearing aid, but otherwise I don't see what else he would need. It's a pretty trivial thing to have and I don't see why anyone with it would need special help.  (+ info)

Is it possible for someone to have two different syndromes that both caused her deafness?

Whenever someone does a report on me for the newspapers or talking about me to someone else, they would say that I have Mondini Syndrome, which is where the cochlear in my inner ear is malformed.
But if you were to talk to my doctors, they would say that I have Pendred Syndrome, which is where my thyroid gland produces abnormal levels of thyroid hormones stuff.
They both are major contributors to the causes of deafness among people.

I'm really confused.
----------

From what I found...the Pendred syndrome is a problem with the thyroid, because a goiter may form in up to 75% of cases. However, they believe it may show an abnormality of the inner ear known as Mondini dysplasia (syndrome).
If you read here, it connects the two:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pendred_syndrome

Here are more links on the Pendred syndrome:
http://ghr.nlm.nih.gov/condition=pendredsyndrome
http://www.nidcd.nih.gov/health/hearing/pendred.htm

Here are a couple more links on the Montini syndrome:
http://www.american-hearing.org/disorders/hearing/cong_hearing.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mondini_dysplasia

I hope this is of some help. The Mondini dysplasia is common...the Pendred syndrome is not...therefore, the newpapers have listed the wrong diagnosis you received.

I would ask the doctor if this is possible
with you to have the mondini dysplasia...if
he saw this on your tests he has done.  (+ info)
