Is Cri-du-chat syndrome a genetic disease?

What clues might indicate that this disease has a genetic nature?
----------

Yes, Cri-du-chat syndrome is a genetic disorder. The main "clue," being the disorder is due to a missing piece of chromosome 5.

Chromosomes are thread-like linear structures in our DNA and DNA is a nucleic acid that contains the genetic instructions used in development and functioning of all living organisms. When something goes awry or is "missing," the result is a genetic or congenital disorder.  (+ info)

could there be a connection between cri-du-chat syndrome and ADD?

My husband and step-son both have ADD/ADHD (respectively) and bipolar disorder. We have recently learned a child we miscarried was missing chrom 5. A close look at the symptoms of both seems somewhat similar...am I dreaming?

I'm not aware of any link...cri-du-chat (which is French, I think, for "cry of the cat") significantly impacts expressive communication skills. I saw a 7 year old boy once (I'm a speech therapist) who had no speech, but was only able to make "mewing" like vocalizations. Don't know if that helps...  (+ info)

is Cri Du Chat Syndrome dominant or recessive?

for a genetic disorder paper.... could not find answer online need help paper due two days from now..
----------

I'm reluctant to apply those terms to a chromosomal abnormality. Cri Du Chat results from partial monosomy of chromosome 5 (i.e. part of one copy of the chromosome of missing). An invidual doesn't have an allele per say, so there's no real heterozygous genotype. The genotype that results in the Cri Du Chat phenotype is defined by the presences of exactly one copy of the short arm of chromosome 5. I think the reason you haven't been able to find the answer is that there isn't one.  (+ info)
