Cleft lip?

I had a few questions about cleft lips and detecting them on an ultrasound.

This is the ultrasound picture of my son's profile (I was 22 weeks pregnant here):

Notice the large bump that appears on his upper lip. The tech. never said anything to me about this, but when I got home and started looking at the pictures, I began to worry.

This is the same profile view of my son (it's a video), and was taken the exact same day:

Does my son appear to have a cleft lip? I'm really scared. My Dr. doesn't want to send me for another ultrasound, but he could not explain the large area above his upper lip in the picture.

I know you guys aren't experts, but I just wanted some opinions other than my own. I could just be overreacting, but I can't help but worry. This is my first baby.
----------

I dont think you should worry yourself too much- it looks to me like the baby is yawning. I mean ultrasounds dont pick up exact outlines, every part of the baby's outline is fuzzy.

Clefts lips are operable and the results are fantstic- i dont think you you should worry yourself.  (+ info)

What is a simple definition of cleft lip and cleft palate?

I know what they are so I'm not looking for a link with some huge explanation. I'm doing a poster on cleft lip and cleft palate and need to include a definition. The class will be taking notes and the definition I have "...are variations of a type of clefting congenital deformity caused by abnormal facial development during gestation" is a little too complex.
Do you know a more simple way to describe it so the class will be able to understand easier?
----------

An abnormality in which the lip failed to close during development and the hard palate are not completely joined.  (+ info)

What are the screening methods for cleft lip?

And what options would be suitable for a couple who have already had a child with a cleft lip?
----------

Hi there. My son was born with a cleft lip, detected at my 20 week anatomy scan. I am due next month with our second baby, and was obviously rather nervous given the increased risk (from 0.1% to 4%) of having another baby with a cleft.

The actual cleft forms sometime between weeks 4 and 12. But the most accurate time to detect a cleft is from 18-19 weeks, when it is more likely to be visible on an ultrasound (although they are sometimes detected earlier). The type and degree of cleft lip also affects how likely it is to be found (ie unilateral or bilateral, complete or incomplete). If your first child already has a cleft, the sonographer should be made aware of this so they can ensure they get a really good look at the lip of your next baby. That way, they will take the time to ensure that bubs is positioned well enough for them to get a really good look.

Cleft palates are a little different in that they may still not be detected - they can be very hard to pick up on ultrasound, even with a specialised operator.

Best of luck.  (+ info)

How can I get help to pay for my daughters cleft lip surgeries?

She will be needing several surgeries to fix her cleft lip and palate. I'm trying to get medical assistance to help me pay for her surgeries, doctor visits...
----------

There are many companies that offer financing for medical costs. Check with your surgeon, they probably have one that they work with. If you are going through a large hospital/medical center for the surgeries, ask them about charity care (yes some hospitals do this, your case has to be approved by a committee, but it can be a great resource). But on top of that, why not go grassroots? Raise the money from your community. Have a friend in a band? Have them play a benefit show. Or ask your coworkers/friends to donate their latte money to your daughter's cause. Just remember, there is money out there, you just have to get resourceful, creative, and out there. Good luck!  (+ info)

How to reduce scarring after cleft lip repair...?

My daughter just had her lip repair done. The plastic surgeon did a great job. I was wondering if anyone knew of a product that could help reduce the scarring if I start using it right away. Any other parents of cleft lip/palate children who have any advise? Any healthcare workers?
----------

My husband and son both have cleft lip and palate. Your PS is the best person to ask, but also I recommend joining Cleft Advocate (www.cleftadvocate.org) because there are so many moms who have BTDT (been there done that) who will have great advice.

Massaging the scar and lip was tremendously helpful for our son. Also, Creme de la Mer works really well at reducing the redness. You can buy the sample size on eBay, rather than spend a fortune on the bigger sizes.

Congrats on the great repair.  (+ info)
