Which autoimmune disease can cause Chilblains?

I have had swelling on my toes and a rash on my feet, around my eyes. I had an MRI of my foot and it was determined I have Chilblains. Mine is not caused by cold but rather a problem with my tissues. My doctor said I will need to be treated by a rheumatology doctor. I will not be able to see the rheumatologist for about 4 months but am going to my other doctor to have more blood test and discuss further. I am worried about what this could be. The only thing my doctor has said over the phone is that it is a systemic illness.

Thanks.

Yes, that is Raynaud's. Many people with Raynaud's are prone to chilblains! You can use ointment on the chilblain sores, but you'll always have to try harder than everyone else to keep warm in the winter! Raynaud's can be treated but most people choose not to, as they'd rather not take medication for something that's not too serious. I have Reynaud's too and I get teased for my purple hands but I don't take medicine, I mostly just wear gloves most of the time.

Help! I suffer with unbroken Chilblains?

I have been suffering from very bad unbroken chilblains on both feet. My toes get so bad that they swell and become very very itchy and i have a burning sensation. They are usually red to start with but may become purple. I have used Chilblain cream and even the old remedy of putting my foot in my own pee which helps but i can't seem to get rid of it altogether. I keep my feet warm and dry and when out in cold weather i where 2 pairs of socks and big boots but feet still cold i know i have poor Circulation in my feet. Is there anything i can do that i am not doing? All advise helpful. Thankyou ( ps i'm only 28)

There are a number of things that can help with circulation - perhaps the best one would be a herb called Ginkgo biloba - but it might help to see an experienced herbalist or nutritionist who would be able to advise you on an individual basis.

Creams and lotions may help the symptoms, and speed up local healing, but you need to take something internally to improve the circulation in general and prevent them developing in the first place. Let me know if it helps.

what can i do about recurring chilblains...any doctors or anything out there?

I'm a female in my teens, i got bad chilblains last winter (only on my fingers) and now they've started to come back again. It was really horrible last year as they were painful and looked it! I'm thinking about going to the doctors before they get too bad again, but is is worth it? I try my best to keep my hands warm and not go from cold to hot too quickly, but this is hard to keep up 100 percent of the time. Do they give you tablets or something? I tried a chilblain cream from Boots last year but it had no affect. Is it a hormonal thing or something? I never got them before last year! THANKYOU!

Best way to take shower to prevent Chilblains?

I have Chilblains in my toes already... My feet are always cold in the winter..right now I have three pairs of socks on and they still feel ice cold. My question is what is the best way to take a shower? I'm usually freezing right before I get in so warm water would be a temperature change to my even colder feet...I could gradually warm up the water, so should I gradually turn the water down before I get out and freeze as soon as I turn the water off? I have a space heater in the bathroom but I hear that heaters can worsen the Chilblains? Im obviously doing something wrong right now for this to happen. Any suggestions?

the best way before you take your shower massage your toes with olive oil or baby oil and make it to stay for a while then when you take the shower it will not freeze and always use this method to prevent the chilblains to develop. best of luck and hope you get well soon  (+ info)

What are chilblains?

Oh skycat, you have just brought back memories of my childhood. I used to suffer from them and my granny swore that you had to use nettle stings to remove the irritation. Can't remember if that worked tho'  (+ info)

information about chilblains?

Chilblains, also called Perniosis or blain, is a medical condition similar to frostbite or trench foot. Chilblains are caused by exposure of skin to damp cold. Small blood vessels below the skin are damaged, but there is no freezing of tissue, thus distinguishing it from frostbite. The condition is also distinguished by numbing of the affected area and the appearance of blisters or open sores. Chilblains does not usually cause permanent injury, but can result in severe damage if left untreated. Some patients have reported a sensitivity to cold in the affected area, long after the condition has healed. They are most common in the young and the elderly, and are more likely to occur in women. They can be prevented by keeping the feet and hands warm in cold weather. A chilblain can chap, crack, or ulcerate; and then is known as a kibe.

Symptoms:
Itchy skin inflammation
Skin redness
Toe skin inflammation
Finger skin inflammation
Earlobe inflammation

Duration:
Usually heals within 3 weeks

Treatments:
Avoid scratching
Anti-itch creams
Calamine lotion
Keep area warm

Prevention:
Avoid cold exposure
Wear gloves
Use warm footwear
Keep hands and feet warm
Healthy diet

Raynaud's vs. Chilblains, or something else?

I think I might have Raynaud's syndrome, but I dont really get the symptoms in my hands. My hands can get very cold and feel like they are burning when exposed to cold, but they don't turn colors. However, my feet are a different story. My third and fouth toes on the right foot turn purple and numb quite often. The skin on them is very rough and dry, but not on my other toes (maybe a little, but nothing like the two toes), and and they are sometimes swollen. My feet always feel cold....I could wear 3 pairs of socks and still be freezing.
In the spring and summer though, I dont have this problem with my toes. Does anyone know what this could be? I had the same problem last year and went to the doc, had an aterial doppler study on my legs that was normal, its not diabetes or vitamin b12 deficiency or peripheral neuropathy. My sed rate was somewhat elevated. The doctor really didnt know what the problem was or how to treat it but it eventually went away.. I am just wondering what type of doctor I should go see about this? A rheumatologist, dermatologist, pediatrist, or neurologist? Thanks for your help!!
I dont want to go back to that doctor, I would like to get a second opinion but I dont know who I should go to.

Parents of kids with autism in particular sensory issues?

Our son refuses to have anything on his feet and always removed shoes and socks almost immediately (he will only wear shorts as well), this was fine in summer but it's cold now he goes outside alot and now has a chilblain on his toe. Obviously this isn't ideal has anyone had anything like this with their child and how did you overcome it, we could get baseball boots and tie them on so he can't get them off and wait the tantrums out but this is going against his sensory problems. Any ideas.

Hello. I feel your pain on part of this while my son never takes his shoes off it took 5 YEARS before he would accept socks.

We tried everything even putting them on inside out lol. I finally found socks he would accept. They are a bit pricey and an be found in catalogs for special needs. They are seamless and TIGHT. My DS will be 8 on the 23rd and I still have to put them on since they are so tight.

Pants we went through as well. I dont know the paticulars of your son BUT my son loves deep pressure input. We would buy girls tights (the heavy ones from the old times not the paper thin ones) and put them under his pants with the feet cut off. OR we found pressure pants under his clothes worked well too. Again these can be found in catalogs and are pricey but very much worth it. Feel free to email me if youd like anymore tips.

Being an autie parent you NEED to be creative lol. We do not allow cords overalls or turtlenecks in our house, we fight toilet flushing and any type of water on our heads to his day. And dont show up with a sweater the sight of those makes him cry cuz "itll hurt"  (+ info)
