can any1 advise me how & wot 2 do about chilblains on the toes?

Found the following information online at http://dermnetnz.org/reactions/chilblains.html.

Unfortunately chilblains respond poorly to treatment. The following may be useful:

- Topical corticosteroid cream applied accurately for a few days to relieve itch and swelling
- Antibiotic ointment or oral antibiotics for secondary infection  (+ info)

Any good treatments for chilblains?

This winter weather is playing merry hell with the old tootsies
----------

I had it last year and it is sooo sore. Feel sorry for you. I used Sudocrem cream , rubbed it into my toes every morning and night and it helped a lot. If you can get hold of some Zambuk it works wonders as well. If you live close to a S-African shop they usually have it in stock, excellent herbal ointment.Good luck.:)  (+ info)

Possible Chilblains. Help?

A few of my toes are swollen and red. They get really itchy and hurt a lot. My mum said it's chilblains and that it's because I wear my tights too tight and for too long. She said I should try to keep my feet cool and dry, is this right? and is this chilblains?

Thanks x

Chillblains are not caused by wearing tights.

They can develop when feet get too cold. So wearing tights and keeping your feet warm is a good thing.

Don't scratch them! It makes them worse. You can get creams from the chemist or doctors to stop with the itching.

Make sure you exercise regularly and try not to go from one temperature extreme to another. Like.. when you're feet are cold from being outside... don't put them near a radiator. etc etc  (+ info)

Who here hate chilblains?

I mean i get them after I was outside in really cold weather. They are annoy and itchy. If I rub or scratch skin, it will hurt, but the itch is making me go crazy..Its impossible take a shower, even with luke warm warmer it will burn the skin and its too cold to take a shower in cold water.
----------

Ouch, hate them. I used to get them at school but haven't had them for about ten years. You're right, it's hard to decide which is the lesser of two evils, the pain or the itch.  (+ info)

Does this sound like Chilblains?

I went out sledging today and my feet got freezing. I'm now home, and my feet are boiling, red, itchy and stiff.
Is it normal for it to be really stiff?
----------

Yep.. I've suffered from it for years. theres a good cream called McGloins chillblain ointment which helps with the inflamation and itchiness.
Keep bathing your feet in warm water aswell, and put them in socks.
hope it gets better :)  (+ info)

I've got chilblains :(..?

I've got chilblains, but I have no idea why. I'm in england, and it's not cold at all right now so I don't get it. They really itch. Mum's a doctor and she's given me some cream to put on it but it's not helping. Does anyone know any other methods to get rid of them, or at least stop the itching and swelling? Thanks!

how do u get ride of chilblains?

Prevention of chilblains:

Keeping your feet warm is an important way to prevent chilblains - use trousers, high top boots, tights, leg warmers and long, thick woollen socks. If your feet do get cold, allow them to warm up slowly - do not put them straight in front of a source of heat (this gives a chance for the circulation to respond to the warming skin). Do not let the feet become exposed to any source of direct heat (eg a heater), especially if the foot is very cold - this is a common factor causing chilblains. Smoking also interferes with the circulation in the small blood vessels and increases the risk of getting chilblains.

Once a chilblain develops:

* do not rub or scratch chilblains

* avoid direct heat (ie do not expose the feet to a heater), but keep the feet warm by the use of woollen socks and footwear

* use soothing lotions (eg calamine lotion)

* if the skin is broken, use an antiseptic dressing to prevent the chilblains becoming infected

* those with diabetes or poor circulation should see a Podiatrist. The risk of further complications from the chilblains in those with a foot that is 'at risk' is too high to delay seeking professional help

* thermal or insulating insoles can help keep the foot warm to prevent chilblains

* lanolin or a similar lotion that is rubbed into the feet will help stimulate the circulation

* there are a number of natural or homeopathic remedies that are recommended for the treatment of chilblains. Some of these do appear to help some people.  (+ info)

I often have this problem. I work in a freezer during the day and my feet get extremely cold to the point of numbness. When I get home and they warm up, they get extremely itchy and swollen. Have you exposed your feet to extreme cold? This is most likely the cause.

Keep your feet warm during the day and try to avoid the cold if possible. Wear thick socks and good, protective shoes when you go out. There are also foot warmer packets that you can put inside your shoes if you know you will be in the cold for a long period of time.

Eventually it will go away, as long as you are not continuing to expose your feet to the cold. The best solution is prevention. Keep your feet warm at all times and if you have someone who would be willing to massage them gently, this also helps.  (+ info)
