chilblains in feet - anyone know what helps besides quitting smoking?

I have poor circulation in my feet and since I suffer with bone spurs in my knee walking is not an option for exercise. My toes are numb and the poor circulation is damaging the nerves
----------

You need to ask a doctor this question. Sounds serious. Quitting smoking would definitely be helpful. Swimming is a good exercise that doesn't involve your knees and will help overall circulation. Rubbing your feet or having someone rub them for you is helpful. But everyone needs some form of exercise so you need some expert advice to find something that you can safely do.

You could ask your doctor about the effectiveness and safety for you of hydrotherapy on your feet. That is putting your feet in ice cold water for a few seconds and then putting them in hot water and then repeating several times. This is very effective for increasing circulation (most used when someone gets a sprain or something and the increased circulation allows for speedier healing).  (+ info)

Chilblains itching like CRAZY?

I'm pretty sure they're chilblains anyway; I get them every winter, my fingers get swollen and red and itchy, it only gets uncomfortable once they're warm. The itching is unbearable! No one really cares though because they've never heard of it (I live in Australia, no one gets chilblains here)...

Does anyone know how to stop it from itching?

can chilblains in the toes cause generalized leg pains?

Chilblains are a symptom, not a cause. Combining cold with poor circulation most likely makes some people susceptible to chilblains.

Generalized leg pain is also a symptom and could also be associated with poor circulation and a number of other things.

Best see your doctor!  (+ info)

whats the best cure for feet and hand chilblains?

im a pensioner
----------

Aerobic exercise and keeping your feet and hands warm are the only ways to prevent chilblains.

Once you have injuries from chilblains, you can help it clear up faster with a cortisone cream or lanolin. If you have bleeding, apply iodine before using a cream. Keeping the feet or hands warmed (but not hot) with gloves or foot warmers is also important.  (+ info)

What causes chilblains?

Chilblains, also called pernio, causes red, swollen skin, which appears several hours after exposure to extreme cold. It's due to inflammation of the small blood vessels in the skin in response to cold. Chilblains most often appears on the cheeks, ears, fingers and toes. The affected skin may have an itchy, burning sensation. This may progress to blisters and even open sores (ulcers).

The cause of chilblains isn't known. But blood tests in some people with chilblains may reveal abnormal proteins that tend to sludge in cold temperatures.

Treatment is to slowly rewarm the affected skin after cold exposure. Ulcers should be kept clean and protected with sterile dressings. Treatment may also include:

Steroid creams to help relieve itching and swelling
Medications that improve circulation
The condition usually clears up within seven to 14 days. To prevent chilblains, avoid exposure to cold  (+ info)

Does anyone have (or has had) Chilblains???

I was just wondering what your prognosis was from your doc when they discovered that you had them. Was this a sign of something bigger (auto immune disorder) or just simply Chilblains? Thank you!!!

There is only one way to prevent chilblains: avoid exposure to cold. You will continue to get them if your feet are wet and cold. Since your mom brought this up, why not see about getting some waterproof boots or shoes?  (+ info)

Need help diagnosing...vasculitis or chilblains?

I have been to the doc and had him stumped! Two weeks ago my second toe swelled up, skin shiny and dark red, hot to the touch. It went through a series of changes over the last two weeks...painful, hot, itchy, etc. One week ago several red spots occured on the bottom of three of my toes (including the swollen one). They are all fading, but still a mystery. The doc tested me for a plethera of things and all came back negative. In our family we have a history of Lupus, etc. I am positive for the Epstein-Barr Virus...I am tired, no energy, aching joints...

I have been reading on the net about chilblains and vasculitis. Does anyone have any info. I can go off of or suggestions about how to find some answers?
