Cafe au lait spots?

When I was 8 year old, I found that two spots had appeared, one on my knee, and another on my torso. They appeared within two days of each other. They look exactly like a couple of pictures of cafe au lait spots that I found on the internet. I still have them. I thought that that was a birthmark, however. Does anyone with a medical background know how these spots appear and whether the way my spots showed up is contigent of cafe au lait spots? When they show up, etc. Thanks

Café au lait spots or cafe-au-lait spots (CAL) are pigmented birthmarks. The name café au lait is French for "coffee with milk" and refers to their light-brown color.

To have a few such spots is totally normal. However, more than six such spots of greater than 1.5 mm in diameter prepubertal or greater than 5 mm in diameter postpubertal children will get the doctor's attention, because they are then essentially diagnostic of neurofibromatosis (although other features are required to make the diagnosis and some individuals may have multiple spots without having the disease - a trait that is itself inherited).

better see your doctor for confirmation..

Cafe-au-lait spots?

I have a lot of cafe-au-lait spots all over my body is there any cream or home remidies that'll remove it them besides the laser spot removel surgery
----------

I don't know how/if they can be removed - But do you know the cause of them?

The reason I am asking is because my daughter is also covered with them and we found out several years ago that she has a disease called neurofibromatosis and cafe-au-lait spots are a hallmark of the disease.

If you do not know why you have them, you may want to have yourself checked for this, just to be on the safe side. This isn't normally a life threatening disease, but it is best to know if you carry the gene for it.

Just my 2 cents - Good Luck  (+ info)

Cafe Au Lait spots?

I'm 23 years old, and I have what I think are cafe au lait marks. A couple of years ago, one appeared on my neck but after a few months it faded and disappeared. I had two appear on my stomach, which were there for ages, but recently got very dry and the skin peeled from them, and now they've disappeared too. In the last week one has appeared in my armpit and seems to be spreading. They seem to be roughly 2 or 3 cm in size. There is no pain.
Does this sound like they are cafe au lait marks? Is it normal for them to appear in your twenties and also disappear? I have no other signs of neurofibromatosis, no freckling, no nodules, etc. Do you think this is something I should be worried about? Is there anything else that may cause marks like this to appear?
----------

Cafe au lait spots don't usually disappear and you are usually born with them like a birthmark. Some do come out more when you have been in the sun. I went tanning in a salon for the first time this past summer and one did actually appear on my chest. It had never been there before. But 6 months later it is still there although very faded. If they are really worrying you, it doesn't hurt to get it checked out by a doctor.  (+ info)

What the percentage of person who has 6 or more cafe au lait spots gets neurofibromatosis?

If the person has 6 or more cafe au lait spots with 1.5cm, what is the approximate percentage to develop a neurofibrmatosis?
----------

As stated in the other 2 answers , There is a DNA test for NF1 and NF2 , I myself would go to a genetic specialist or a Neurologists and ask for the testing A NF Dr would be the best place to go , Most of the time Cafe- spots and freckling around the groin area is a first start I know I Had there just after I was born Back in the late 1950's there wasn't much known about NF Not till the late 70's was I able to find any info . if you go to www.ctf.org It is about the best place to start for research . Hope this Helps.

Baby with many cafe au lait spots. Neurofibromatosis?

Hi - I have an 8 month old daughter who has 12 very faint cafe au lait spots, all of which are larger than 5mm. Based on my google searches it seems like neurofibromatosis is a real possibility. Has anyone else had their infant diagnosed? Was it confirmed by blood test or other symptoms? Did you go to see a specialist immediately? Does anyone know of other possible causes besides neurofibromatosis? Neither my husband or I are aware that we have NF. I am sad and scared and not sure what to do.
----------

Hi, I was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis type 1 2 years ago when I was 18. As a baby, I had multiple cafe au lait spots, but it was only recently that I noticed the growth of neurofibromas on my skin.
I'd advise you see a doctor, but also not to worry. Most people with it (me included!) have such mild symptoms that it does not affect your life. I've read most of the internet literature - and it seems really frightening, but most of the cases discussed are the very severe and very unusual. She will be fine - good luck!  (+ info)

could this be cafe au lait spots??????

my son has about 6 little birthmarks and they are on his stomach and legs. i was reading about that and they said it could be cafe au lait spots which is a sign on neurofibrosis or something like that. im a little scared. he is mixed and has fair skin. the spots are a little darker than him. he also has a bruise on his bottom that hes had since birth but my daughter has that as well. does anyone have any information or could explain better what i should be looking for?
----------

It could be cafe au lait spots. Are they a light brown almost like coffee with milk? It can't hurt to mention it to his pediatrician. My stepson has neurofibromatosis type 1. I've included a link on this for you to check out. If you feel this is a possibility, definitely discuss it with his doctor. They have tests that can tell you if he has this condition.  (+ info)

Cafe-au-lait spots and neurofibromatosis?

i need to know everything.....
what are the odds of needing chemo or dying from it?
----------

Chemo doesn't work, that what my doctors have told me. Most people with type one can live a fairly good long life. That may not be so for those that have the rarest form of nf type 2, which can be cancerous.  (+ info)
