Anyone out there with adrenal insufficiency?

Just told I have adrenal insufficiency even though all summer long my cortisol and ACTH have been continually low - so I guess I've had it for quite some time, so why now are they finally treating me with steroids? I believe the cause of this was from getting 3 epidural and facet injections. I had to postpone my back surgery because of this and I am very upset. I do understand you cannot have surgery without having the appropriate level of cortisol to handle the stress. Is there a difference between adrenal insufficiency and Addisons Disease.

I am glad you received your diagnosis; at long last you will have the information you need. Will continue to keep you in my prayers.  (+ info)

why does adrenal support supplements cause dehydration?

I have been currently taking low dose supplements for adrenal insufficiency. after about five days of taking the supplements, I have experienced dehydration that cannot seem to be corrected. Does anyone know why this is and how to fix it? I have been eating plenty of sea salt and drinking alot of water but it does not help!

The adrenal glands produce a mineralocorticoid called aldosterone. This regulates sodium retention in the kidneys, and hence water retention. It is possible that the medication for managing your Addisons, or sheehans syndrome, or whatever you have with the adrenal glands, is affecting the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. A system involved in regulating blood volume (by saving water from being urinated out). Talk to your doctor  (+ info)

Is it normal for you to feel tired all the time with adrenal insufficiency or hypothyroidism?

This has happened recently. Over the past few months, actually. I'm starting to think it might all be in my head, but I know it isn't. I can barely stay awake for three or four hours without wanting to go back to bed. It's miserable. I found out I have hypothyroidism about a year ago. I'm not on any meds for it as of right now. For the adrenal insufficiency I just found out last month and recently had some blood drawn, and a shot. I'm not sure what the shot was, though. I'm just trying to figure out why I have no energy at all. Any ideas?

Adrenal Insufficiency after Bilateral Nephrectomy?

I had my Adrenal Glands removed so I have none (Kidneys were infected to the extent that they had to be removed and thus, the adrenal glands as well). I want to know why I have to take Prednisone for the rest of my life. Is there any circumstance where someone without adrenals can stop Prednisone (or any corticosteroid) slowly tapering the dosage but eventually being completely off it?

The more detailed the answer, the better, thanks!

First I am sorry about what happened to you. I have never taken care of a patient with no adrenal glands, so I am basing my responce on what I learned in nursing school. Unfortunately your doctor did not explain to you why you are taking this medication, and that is not ok. Hopefully I can help you a bit, but I am unsure how much. Your adrenal glands are located on the top of your kidneys, they are important for releasing a hormone called cortisol, it is a corticosteroid. They also release other hormones that help your body stay in a natural balancing state. These hormones are very important. You having NO adrenal glands does so much to your body the hormones released or lack there of is key to a healthy body. You have been essentially given Addison's disease, the lack of adrenal glands caused this. I think you should look up Addison's disease, it will explain a lot of what your asking. And I think that you need to find a better doctor, one who gives you ALL the information you need to live a healthy life. I hope this helps in some way, I also want to say that with taking that medication, there are many side effects that you should know about. I will give you a good site to look up Addison's, and good luck to you!   (+ info)

what is adrenal insufficiency?

It results from the lack of essential hormones your body needs. It's called Addison's Disease and will result in death if not treated.
Cortisol is replaced orally with tablets taken once or twice a day.

Aldosterone is replaced with oral doses of a mineralocorticoid, called fludrocortisone acetate, that are taken once a day. Fludrocortisone helps to maintain the right levels of salt and fluids in the body.  (+ info)

is adrenal insufficiency hereditary?

what kind of chemical exposure?
good honest md's are hard to find
----------

It can be but is not always (or even usually):

Primary Adrenal Insufficiency

Most cases of Addisons disease are caused by the gradual destruction of the adrenal cortex, the outer layer of the adrenal glands, by the body's own immune system. About 70 percent of reported cases of Addisons disease are due to autoimmune disorders, in which the immune system makes antibodies that attack the body's own tissues or organs and slowly destroy them. Adrenal insufficiency occurs when at least 90 percent of the adrenal cortex has been destroyed. Sometimes only the adrenal gland is affected; sometimes other glands also are affected, as in the polyendocrine deficiency syndrome.

The polyendocrine deficiency syndrome is classified into two separate forms, referred to as type I and type II. Scientists think that the polyendocrine deficiency syndrome is inherited because frequently more than one family member tends to have one or more endocrine deficiencies.  (+ info)

Help, I am overwhelmed with trying to find info regarding adrenal insufficiency on internet?

Recently told I have insufficent adrenal insufficientcy. CAT ruled out Addisons Disase. My own endo said I should get 2nd opinion but my insurance doesn't cover any other dr. in that field. Anyway, how exactly do they know what to give you and how much. He gave me script for medrol pack which I am almost positive from all I have read is not the way to begin treating this condition. ALSO, I know stress makes it worse, but can the disease cause you to become more stressed? I feel like i am losing my mind - all I do is cry, punch the walls, throw things, etc. PLEASE HELP
----------

If you haven't been to WebMd.com and MayoClinic.com, you can read up on adrenal insufficiency on both of those sites and prednisone is one of the first drugs of choice for this condition on both of those sites. I would be taking the med religiously while you try to figure out what is actually going on.  (+ info)

low thyroid, toxic metals, adrenal insufficiency, hypoglycemia...natural treatments?

For low thryoid take a mixture of potassium iodine, elemental iodine and selenium (an important co-factor for iodine). Work up to 50 to 100 mg per day until you have replenished your body's probable iodine deficiency.

To get rid of toxic metals, cilantro and chlorella work well. Also, methionine, N-Acetyl Cysteine.

For adrenal insufficiency:

Avoid stress. Prolonged stress is one of the greatest risk factors for causing AI. Unrelenting periods of stress mean your adrenals eventually become unable to match your requirement for the 'stress' hormone cotisol. Stressful situations cause your body to adopt a 'fight or flight' response, causing your adrenal glands to pump out increased amounts of adrenaline in order to prepare your body for action, which further weakens your adrenal glands.

So take active steps to relax - gentle exercise such as yoga has been shown to be an effective stress-buster. However, it's important that you don't partake in any strenuous exercise, such as aerobics, as the physical strain will only tire weak adrenals and delay your recovery. In addition, avoid stimulants like caffeine, alcohol and nicotine, which tire overtaxed adrenals further.

Following a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet is extremely beneficial. Too many refined carbohydrates means your pancreas has to produce excess insulin, causing your blood glucose levels to crash. This forces your adrenals into a cycle of pumping out surplus cortisol to unlock back-up stores of glucose in your liver as an emergency fuel source. Over time this causes your adrenals to become exhausted. Proteins digest slowly and release energy over many hours - this spares your adrenals from having to carry out extra work.

Natural remedies can help exhausted adrenal glands recover faster

The B vitamins are critical for helping your adrenals manufacture the important corticosteroid hormones, cortisol and aldosterone. Take vitamin B3 (as niacin 50-500mg/day), vitamin B5 (as the coenzyme panthethine 300mg/day) and B12 (as the coenzyme methylcobalamin 5mg/day). A vitamin C deficiency has also been linked to adrenal weakness. Take 1,000mg of vitamin C a day.

For hypoglycemia:

A diet that is very low in sugar should help alleviate the problem, along with GTF Chromium. One 200 mcg chromium tablet in the morning is usually all that is needed, although a second dose may be necessary after a high sugar intake, such as eating candy, cake or other dessert. Heavy physical activity or working in the sun can also call for a second dose.  (+ info)

Have you had adrenal problems, and how do you manage this.?

I'd like to change what I am doing, which is artificial hormone for thyroid which may not be right for me due to underlying adrenal disease.

I am interested in knowing what people have done to successfully treat adrenal insufficiency. Thanks!
So far I am not treating adrenals. I have tried to get doc to help to no avail. I do think adrenals are the underlying issue. What would proper treatment be for adrenals?
