Why do gunshot wounds have a higher mortality rate compared to stab wounds?

It's kind of like comparing cutting into an apple with a knife vs. hitting it with a sledgehammer. Plus some bullets are made to explode on impact sending shards of metal all over your body.  (+ info)

How are stab wounds treated ?

Unfortunately one of my friends had her house robbed and the burglar attacked her and stabbed her twice just below her ribcage. I'm just really worried for her and was wondering how she will be treated and if she will be okay or not.
----------

Hopefully she went to the hospital to be checked out. Stab wounds are treat like any other wound except they will check to make sure that the wounds are so deep that they injured any underlying organs or body parts. x-rays, and other tests will be done to determine the depth of the stab wounds. Because of the location they will want to make sure the lungs were not injured. As far as the wounds themselves they will be cleaned, stitched, stapled or sewn closed, Covered with a dressing and bandage. The will most likely give antibiotics for infection. She also will be most likely kept at a hospital for a few days just to make sure everything is ok.  (+ info)

how long would it take to bleed to death with deep stab wounds?

my sister was stabbed several times near her left lung would like to know how long it took her to bleed to death
----------

This is impossible to answer without more info. A human can actually bleed out very rapidly, in much less than an hour but this can also occur over a period of days with less severe bleeding. Just no way to put a time frame on it.

Why is the mortality rate for gunshot wounds higher than stab wounds?

A bullet is traveling very fast and causes more damage than a stab wound. To die from stabbing the knife would have to hit a major artery or a vital organ.  (+ info)

Can someone help me with a little research for a story I am writing? (Regarding stab wounds?)?

If someone was to get multiple stab wounds, is it possible for them to drop into a coma?
----------

A coma is the position whereby the brain is affected and is usually injured. As for stab wounds, unless they have injured the skull and/or the brain, it is unlikely to directly cause the body going into coma.
However; if the bodily injuries are severe enough to cause excessive blood loss, then the brain may be starved of blood and therefore oxygen, which would bring on unconsciousness, which can lead to complications arising which may lead to a coma state.  (+ info)

I've noticed that gunshot wounds have higher mortality rates than stab wounds?

Why might this be?
----------

A knife makes a single clean cut wound that will certainly bleed a lot but if no major arteries are cut and the person receives first aid quickly his chances of recovery are good. However depending on calibre and type of bullet used by the shooter a gunshot wound is usually much deeper than a knife wound and it is not unusual for a bullet to completely penetrate the person and so cause two external wounds. In addition because of the high velocity of a bullet it causes a lot of body tissue damage because of the shock wave this rapid speed generates and all this damaged tissue bleeds even though the bullet did not actually physically touch it.

The link below may interest you it is to a site where they have done various bullet penetration tests.

How do stab wounds feel?

I researched this, expecting the obvious pain, but some people said you sometimes don't feel pain. Others said they don't even realize it until they feel blood. But I think this depends on where you're stabbed. How would getting stabbed in the stomach feel? Details please, I'm doing this research for a death scene in my novel.
----------

It all depends on what your adrenal gland is doing. If you are jacked up and in the middle of running to or from danger, in a fight, etc. You may not feel it until later. It happened to me once when a sharp rock went into my foot when I was running for my life down a creek bed many years ago.

Other wise, yeah, getting stabbed just hurts, doubly so if the stabbing object runs aground with bone or cartilage.  (+ info)

Does beer sterilize stab wounds?

I read somewhere that if you could stabbed and you pour vodka or whisky over the wound it would sterilize it so you dont get some sort of infection.
Would beer work too?
