Why do wounds near a bone take longer to heal?

I have heard that wounds for example near the knee cap take longer to heal. I would like to know why they take longer and if this fact is true. I am all ears let me know about your suggestions.
----------

Just an assumption, but I would assume that it's because the bone can't transport blood, oxygen, antibodies, nutrients, and all those things that aid in healing. If a wound is surrounded by thick flesh on 3 sides, but a big bone on the 4th side or thin flesh there, it will probably heal faster around those 3 sides, while it's slower on the 4th side.  (+ info)

Why are wounds a good place for infections?

Do wounds or infections make it easier for bacteria to grow and stuff? Why are open cuts good candidates for infections?
----------

First, an intact skin is the first barrier/defence against all infection. The moment it is disturbed it put the person at risk of acquiring an infection from the environment and even from his own skin flora.
It should be remembered that not all wound will get infected and there are various factors play in this matter. The nature of wound itself is very important as a predisposing factor. If the wound resulted in loss of major portion of skin and tissues , the chances are increasing. Contamination is another factor too. Once, microbes invade the area underneath the tissue, it breeds quickly as the environment underneath the tissue is warm, having plenty of oxygen or no oxygen(sometime lack of oxygen that favours the growth of microbes) and dark.
If your wound contains lot of debris(death tissues), it is another good source of multiplication.
There are other factors too that favour the growth such as any chronic illnesses like diabetes, vascular problems, malnutrition, drugs(steroids hinders the wound healing), and lack of treatment for the wound.
So, it is multifactorial and any wound that has occurred from a dirty source and resulted in loss of major portion of skin and tissues will require a proper attention to reduce the risk of infection. However, even a minor cut can have a great effect to the body due to infection, hence need not to be overlooked.
Hope, this helps.  (+ info)

How do you get wounds to heal?

I have wounds on multiple parts of my body (I put it through a lot of hell) and I was wonder what's the quickest way to get them to heal?
Uh, btw-I might have diabetes and someone told me that means it could take longer for wounds to heal, and I've had most of them for years, really, because they itch and I scratch them...I don't like how they get that hard cover when healing, how can I prevent that?
----------

if uv got diabetes, u should consult an internist to control ur blood sugar. those wound will never go away and may even progress as long as ur blood sugar is not controlled.
for generalized or multiple wounds, best is to take oral antibiotic medication.
go to ur doctor, dont live in misery, u can live a normal long life just like everybody if ur blood sugar is well-controlled. plus u'll avoid the long-term complications of diabetes.  (+ info)

Do you think this is an effective product to help heal wounds?

I recently got a pimple from my hormonal time of the month. I have an important event coming in 5 days so i want it to heal nicely. It's called lysine cold sore treatment.. yes i know cold sores arn't wounds, but this stiff contains many vitmins such as vitamins D,A, E it also contains zinc oxide and many other benifical healing agents.. what do you think?
----------

Well why I do not think it will harm it. I do feel there are much better products available that will help clear it up quicker.
I would try to find something with a high percentage of "Salicylic Acid" in it salicylic acid is basically aspirin. but it will help dry up and burn away the first couple layers of skin. Allowing the health skin layers up under the pimple take its place. Good Luck! ;-)  (+ info)

Why in the dead sea wounds and other sores are very painful?

Why in the dead sea ( in the west bank of Israel and the east bank of Jordan) does sores and wounds hurt and are unbearably painful? i know it is because of the salt but what does the salt do?
----------

Dead Sea Salt has been used for literally thousands of years to assist in the healing and cleansing of wounds. The high mineral content of this salt is absorbed by the skin and sooths and feeds the skin as it is absorbed. The very high salt content acts as a powerful astringent and draws out infection and has a mild antiseptic effect. Be sure though that 100% natural Dead Sea salt is used as scents and colouring agents should not be put on open skin wounds as they too can be absorbed. Many of the top tattoo and piercing establihments recommend Dead Sea salt for care of recently completed piercings and tattoo's.

The unique minerals in the Dead Sea salt are rapidly absorbed by the skin and have been shown in studies to positively speed up the healing of skin conditions. The minerals are so unique that they are found only in the salts of the Dead Sea and in no other body of water.  (+ info)

What is it that makes wounds itch when healing?

Just had major surgery and the key hole wounds are itchy as hell.
----------

There is really no definitive answer to that, but the prevailing theory is that histamine (the substance that causes itchy allergic reactions) is released by the cells of injured and healing tissues. Histamine release is a normal part of the healing process, so the itchiness is a sign that healing has begun. With your doctor's permission, you may be able to take an antihistamine to help relieve the itching or you may be able to apply a topical cream (less effective because the process causing the itching isn't superficial). But please do ask your doctor first.  (+ info)

Is there a part of the coconut that can help speed up healing the wounds of a diabetic person?

Got this from my friend. According to her, there's a part of the coconut that, when applied to a diabetic person's wounds, can help speed up the healing process. I don't know the difference between the healing process of a normal person and a diabetic person, but I wanted to know more about this, so anyone know about this, too?
----------

Virgin coconut oil - eat it raw & put it on wounds.

Saturated fats found in butter & coconut oil (myristic acid & lauric acid) play key roles in immune health. Loss of sufficient saturated fatty acids in the white blood cells hampers their ability to recognize & destroy foreign invaders, such as viruses, bacteria, & fungi. Myristic & lauric acid have potent germ-killing ability. We need dietary replenishment of them to keep the immune system vigilant against the development of cancerous cells & infectious invaders.  (+ info)

I always knew they would eat the dead flesh and used to be very affective for keeping wounds clean. Then I was watching House and they used it on a burn patient. So of course my first though was, ew, but then I wondered would a real doctor ever use them these days?

Just curious.
