I am 18 years old, 5'10, and weigh 170 LBS. I am starting a new diet and trying to lose water weight. Would a gallon in a span of 4 hours be too much?

What is a condition that results from water intoxication? What does that condition mean?

Water intoxication causes hyponatremia (low sodium concentration in the blood).

Sodium is necessary for proper function of the nervous system and muscles. And inadequate concentration of sodium in the blood can cause nausea, muscle cramps, disorientation, slurred speech, and confusion. Extreme hyponatremia can result in seizures, coma, or death.

i know about the harmful effects of water intoxication, but is it really bad to drink that much water?

and i dont mean in one sitting, like in a competition .. i know thats very bad .. what i mean, is it bad for someone to drink a certain amount of water DISTRIBUTED throughout the day .. i want to start drinkin water more ... and today, i would say i drank about 3/4 of a gallon throughout the day ... is that too much?
----------

3/4 of a gallon per day would definitely be safe. A whole gallon per day would be safe. However, it is best to have about 1/2 of your daily fluid intake be water and the other 1/2 be juice, milk, Gatorade, or other decaffeinated beverages, just because those things have some electrolytes. The danger with drinking too much water (and by too much we're talking dumping tons of water down your throat) is that it dilutes electrolytes, so if some of what you're drinking contains electrolytes you should be fine.  (+ info)

I'm 5'7'' 198 lbs...would I die from water intoxication if a drank a gallon of water in a few minutes?

I have severe constipation and nothing works so I was thinking of drinking a whole gallon of water within a few minutes.
----------

Not necessarily. As long as you piss it out when you feel the need.  (+ info)

approximatwely how much water would you need to drink to have water intoxication?

don't ask question pls...just answer!
----------

Water intoxication (also known as hyperhydration or water poisoning) is a potentially fatal disturbance in brain functions that results when the normal balance of electrolytes in the body is pushed outside of safe limits by over-consumption of water.[1] Normal, healthy (both physically and nutritionally) individuals have little to worry about accidentally consuming too much water. Nearly all deaths related to water intoxication in normal individuals have resulted either from water drinking contests, in which individuals attempt to consume more than 10 liters (10.5 quarts) of water over the course of just a few minutes, or long bouts of intensive exercise during which electrolytes are not properly replenished, yet massive amounts of fluid are still consumed.  (+ info)

what is the limit before getting water intoxication?

well, i do know all about water intoxication and the story about the "hold your wee for a wii". I'm a pretty healthy guy and i always drinking water but i don't want to go past the "limit" if there is one.

Is there a doctor in the house XD
----------

I'm not a doctor, but it's my opinion that if you're drinking the same amount you usually drink without any weird effects, then there's nothing wrong with you. I know that you're supposed to drink 1 litre of water for every 50 pounds that you weigh, but if you're a really active person, obviously you'll be sweating more and you'll need more water. If you're seriously worried, see a doctor or a (legitimate) medical website, not trust the answers of a bunch of random people on some glorified internet search engine.  (+ info)

How much water does it take to cause water intoxication?

There's a point where the electrolytes in the blood can become too low from dilution by too much water. The likelihood of developing an electrolyte problem from drinking water depends on a person's condition when they start drinking the water. If a person is fully hydrated and has a normal electrolyte concentration, it can can take as long as a day of constant drinking to flush enough electrolytes to cause a problem. If a person has been sweating and is dehydrated at the outset, it can happen with as little as a gallon of water in a couple of hours.  (+ info)

Water Intoxication: Sudden change in water consumption?

I've always been a little dehydrated and it reflected visibly in my performance. Recently I've been trying to get myself healthier, and decided that I difinitely needed to increase my water intake.

At first I definitely felt the difference. A little more energy, feeling a little more refreshed... But it hasn't been long and my stomach is starting to react to the water. I'm getting cramps and feeling slightly nauseous even though I'm still not quite up to what I should be.

So my question is, could the sudden drastic change in my level of water consumption trigger Water Intoxication?
Perhaps water intoxication as a diagnosis is a bit extreme. I'm now considering the possibility that it's just because my stomach isn't used to all that water. I think I'll have to work my way up to my goals more gradually, maybe try something other than just plain water too.
----------

Water intoxication results in an over abundance of water that dilutes your electrolytes to dangerous levels. It is normal though, to feel nauseated if you have too much water at once. Example: -many people who have to drink large amounts of water over the course of and hour before ultrasounds complain of nausea. The recommended daily intake is 8-10 cups daily.  (+ info)

how long does it take for water intoxication symptoms to go away?

without being treated.

one way to help is to eat salt, that way, your body will try to balance it naturally  (+ info)
