How much water would someone have to drink to cause water intoxication and in what time period?
----------

I dont think anything was wrong with the water i think she died from the amount she drank?????
----------

Wikpedia has a pretty good explanation: see link below. That was really sad. She entered the radio contest to hold her wee for a Wii that she was trying to get for her kids. Several of the D.J.'s at the radio station have subsequently been fired.  (+ info)

What is water intoxication? Is there such a thing?

I am drinking a lot of water about 2- 3 liters a day. Yesterday I started to feel sick and subsequently started vomiting. My friend suggested that I had water intoxication. Is there such a thing?
----------

Although drinking plenty of water is good for you, it can be bad as well. If you drink to much you can completely flush out your system of electrolytes, vitamins & minerals which could land you in the hospital. When I was in the service I had a friend who ended up like that, he drank so much water he started throwing up, feeling dizzy & a number of other things. I thought at the time he was being a big baby because we were scheduled to go on a 30 mile hike later that night at 2 in the morning, turns out he wasn't.  (+ info)

How does water intoxication kill a person?

What is the process happening in a body to shut down the body's functions?
----------

It basically upsets the balance of certain minerals in the blood:

If water enters the body more quickly than it can be removed, body fluids are diluted and a potentially dangerous shift in electrolyte balance occurs.

Most water intoxication is caused by hyponatremia, an overdilution of sodium (salt) in the blood plasma, which in turn causes an osmotic shift of water from extracellular fluid (outside of cells) to intracellular fluid (within cells). The cells swell as a result of changes in osmotic pressure and may cease to function. When this occurs in the cells of the central nervous system and brain, water intoxication is the result. Additionally, many other cells in the body may undergo cytolysis, wherein cell membranes that are unable to stand abnormal osmotic pressures rupture, killing the cells  (+ info)

How much water do you need to drink before you die of water intoxication?

Just come up with an answer for someone who ways 125 lbs.
----------

It depends on the person. If they're healthy it's gonna be really hard to die of water intoxication, in terms of nutrition already in the body.

I'd wager 5-10 litres. Why do you want to know this anyway?  (+ info)

How much water is safe to drink within 1 hour before you have to worry about water intoxication?

Just asking. I don't wanna die in the course of trying to be healthy. It would KIND of defeat the purpose...
Ok, say I'm about - 5-foot-4, and on the... *ahem*... 'heftier' side of life, since people say it has to do with size, blah blah blah.
----------

You'd have to drink a lot in an hour, much more than you likely ever would normally.
It doesn't take too much water to quench one's thirst. Even if you drank two, three glasses of water, that wouldn't be enough to water intoxicate you.
Did you hear about the woman who died last year after participating in water-drinking contest? I read that she may have drank about two gallons of water, without going to the bathroom.
She didn't feel well after drinking that much, and soon got a very bad headache.
I drink a lot of water. It's my favorite thing to drink. I've easily drank 24 ounces in less than an hour, but eventually I also went to the bathroom. I didn't avoid that like the people in that water-drinking competition did.
Bottom line, only drink when thirsty. As far as I know, again, it takes a lot of consumption to risk harm by drinking water.  (+ info)

what happens to your body when you get water intoxication?

I have a drug test tomorrow and I keep hearing to drink tons of water. What will happen to me if I get sick? death???
----------

Water intoxication can be prevented if a person's intake of water is limited to his or her losses, this is easily achieved by only drinking when thirsty. Healthy kidneys are able to excrete approximately 1 liter per hour of fluid however stress (from prolonged physical exertion), as well as disease states, can greatly reduce this amount.

Water intoxication (also known as hyperhydration or water poisoning) is a potential fatal disturbance in brain functions that results when the normal balance of electrolytes in the body is pushed outside of safe limits by over-consumption of water.[1] Normal, healthy (both physically and nutritionally) individuals have little to worry about accidentally consuming too much water

in short, replace your electrolytes (gatorade), don't exert yourself while cleansing yourself, and do not exceed 1 liter an hour. You should be fine.

An added note: I have heard that if you drink a lot of water right before you go in, it may be identified as "delute" and you may have to come another day for a test. (at least buys you some time)  (+ info)
