How are Vitreous eye floaters caused?

I went to see my optician and apparently she had 'detected a vitreous floater in the superior fundus of the RE.' and it could be pulling at the retina. What does this mean? I haven't had any symptoms like flashing lights, so is it serious?
What is the cause?

Thankyou in advance :]
----------

Floaters are usually caused by a calcium build up in the vitreous. They really don't know why, sometimes as in my case from a virus which caused an inflammation process. My retina attached itself to the macula.I had a vitrectomy which got rid of the floaters and fixed the problem but they only do surgery as a last resort not just to get rid of floaters. They waited 6 years before they dd my surgery  (+ info)

What causes detachment from reality during a panic attack?

When i have a panic attack...among other symptoms, I feel like i am going to lose control of my self and i start to feel like things are not real.

What exactly causes you to feel detached from reality?
----------

To explain it fully would take pages.. but this is the short version. In a panic attack your body is setting itself up to run away as fast as it possibly can, or to fight to the death. Your body believes it is under attack and the adrenaline and all that kind of stuff is ready for immediate action. Among those conditions that are created is the feeling of being detached. Because you need to shed all distractions and be able to focus 100% on the 'danger'. So your mind takes you to the place of a prey animal. That is why an animal in a trap will have a glazed over look.. it is in that same place of having reality suspended so that it can fight with little pain and all of its power to get away. I survived six yrs of panic attacks and came out a much healthier and stronger person, so take hope. And I never had to do therapy or take drugs to get alright, so hang in there.  (+ info)

Retinal Detachment: How do you get the sight back into a damage eye urgently?

And do you know any good hospitals in Ireland and the UK that deals with retinal detachment problems?
----------

Retinal detachment is separation of the neural retinal layer from the underlying retinal pigment epithelium layer. Symptoms are decreased peripheral or central vision, often described in the acute phase as a curtain coming down. Associated symptoms are painless vision disturbances, including flashing lights and numerous floaters. Diagnosis is by indirect funduscopy; ultrasonography may determine the extent of the lesion. Immediate treatment to reattach the retina is imperative if central vision is threatened. Treatment includes systemic corticosteroids; sealing the retinal holes by laser, diathermy, or cryotherapy; scleral buckling; transconjunctival cryopexy; photocoagulation; pneumatic retinopexy; intravitreal surgery; and enucleation, depending on the cause and location of the lesion. Most reversible damage occurs early, so once the macula is detached and vision decreases, treatment is less urgent.
The outcome depends upon the location and extent of the detachment and early treatment. If the macula has not detached, the results of treatment can be excellent. Most retinal detachments can be repaired, but not all of them. The unsuccessful reattachment of the retina results in loss of vision.
A retinal detachment is an urgent problem that requires medical attention within 24 hours of the first symptoms.  (+ info)

What are the symptoms of retinal detachment?

I had a vitrectomy last week. Now in low lighting situations if I move my eyes in just the right way I see this black blob that looks like the afterimage of a flash from a camera. I do not see it when I look outside, only indoors and it is not always, just sometimes. Again it is like when you look at the sun for a while then you see the afterimage for a few minutes, except I have not been looking at the sun, just had a vitrectomy last week.
----------

I don't think you have a detached retina. The sight suddenly goes. Maybe not all but sometimes a line or half of sight. Usually if not taken care of within 24 hours the sight is gone forever.  (+ info)

Is the Detachment feeling of Depersonalization Disorder constant, or can it also occur in episodes?

I get it in episodes, so I'm questioning my diagnosis, because everyone else I've spoken to has it constantly.

I have it SOMEWHAT constantly but mild, but then I get episodes where it's much, much more severe and scary, and more dream-like.
----------

Yes it is generally episodic, in fact, most mental illnesses are.
I don't blame you for doubting your diagnosis, however. It's pretty rare. I'm surprised you know many other people with the same symptoms.  (+ info)

Is there a permanent solution to having a retinal detachment fixed?

I believe there are three methods for this type of surgery, and I was wondering if either one of these, or another type of surgery that will permanently fixed this problem. The 3 types of surgery used for this operations are scleral buckling operation, Pneumatic retinopexy, and Vitrectomy.
----------

There is a 70% to 90% success rate with all the surgeries you mentioned. The type of surgery used depends on the complexity of the detachment.

This article goes into detail about the various options:

What activities or kinds of exercise increase the risk of a retinal detachment?

I know a blow to the head, or sports, such as boxing, or any jarring movement is risky, but what about jogging, jump-roping, vigorous dancing, and roller coasters?
----------

unless you are in an extremely fragile state (like just had retinal detachment surgery like yesturday) then jogging, jumping rope, wild dancing, and roller coasters will not give you a higher risk for retinal detachment.
i've had 4 retinal detachments (twice in each eye) and they all happened with out me doing anything. cuz i'm just at a very high risk of retinal detachment. even being at such a high risk for it and having 4 already my eye dr still says its fine for me to do the things i mentioned above.  (+ info)

Can an optician spot retinal detachment?

Im worried that I may be getting retinal detachment. I have an optician appointment next week so I was wondering if they would be able to spot it?
----------

I believe they may be able to spot that but better yet is an ophthalmologist.
the ophthalmologist will just send you to an ophthalmologist anyway. or a specialist. you can make your own choice on that. go to symptom checker and verify that you are on the right track.
be careful and do not wait too long, or go on into the emergency room  (+ info)

How crazy is someone who has been diagnosed as borderline anti-social with mild detachment disorder?

Ok, lets change the word crazy to mentally and emotionally questionable.
----------

no one is "crazy" so to speak. they just come across as different. i have borderline personality disorder but i wouldn't say i was "crazy" and its horrible being stereotyped as "crazy". a person with any kind of mental disorder jsut needs understanding and empathy  (+ info)
