Which is larger in diameter, the “average” Chlamydia or the vaccinia virus?

Chlamydia, but not by a lot.

Chlamydiae vary in size according to what stage they are in their reproductive cycle. As infectious "elementary bodies" they are around 350 to 450 nm in diameter. After entering the cell they change to a "reticulate body" which is metabolically active and about 800-1000 nm.

The vaccinia virus is large, as viruses go: about 250 x 360 nm, only a little smaller than the chlamydial elementary body.
