Tramadol and urinary retention?

I take 50 mg of tramadol daily in the morning. The positive side effects are relief of back pain and anxiety. The only negative side effect I get is that I seem to hold urine at night. I get up to pee up to 6 times a night and can only get a little out at a time. This has been going on for a while, and it's not a bladder infection or anything like that. Anyone else have this problem? Is it serious?
----------

About 1 to 5% of those who take tramadol will experience increased urinary frequency as a side effect. It may wear off, but there is know whay to know for sure. If you are on it chronically you will probably want to change to something else for pain relief, if you just have it for a short while, then it is up to you wether you think it is still worth using, otherwise you can take 2 exta strength tylenol every four to six hours, but not more than 8 in a day. good luck  (+ info)

how does urinary retention raise blood preesure ?

what is the mechanism ??
----------

Its all about volumes and pressures. The more of a substance you try to cram into a container the higher the pressure goes. If you body is retaining urine, that fluid has to go somewhere. The more liquid (substance) you have in your vascular system (container) the higher the pressure goes.

In some cases the higher pressure in the vascular system causes the blood stream to push liquid and waste products into the lungs causing pulmonary edema.  (+ info)

urinary retention in bladder?

the doc said my post void residual was a bit abnormal and that he found numerous kidney stones in my left and right kidneys. i'm very worried about the urinary retention. there wasn't any hydronephrosis or anything like that found. for the past two years I have had to urinate frequently.. lately I have had to urinate more frequently at night. I'm 25 years old and I'm really scared by this finding. can someone give me some input? thanks
----------

I think that if the doctor was very concerned then he may have set up for an treat with a ultrasound that can breakdown the stones.
If you have concerns you should discuss it with him or her and hopefully you will get the answers you need. If you don't then seek another opinion.  (+ info)

post operative urinary retention?

my girlfriend has sholder surgery earlier today and now she is suffering from post operative urinary retention. The doctor on call was kind of a jerk and just said "well, i suggest you bring her into the er" and hung up on me, so I'm just wondering if this is a common problem? Or if there is anything we can do to help her problem? any serious insight would help! Thanks
----------

This is something you should not delay investigating. It is impossible to know if it is serious or not (it could be). You should go to the ER if it's lasted more than a few hours since discharge. Also, be clear on when she drank how much liquid, and what type of urinary retention she has (incomplete evacuation, urge without urination, urge without any evacuation, no urge and no evacuation). If the patient had general anesthesia, they are generally told to drink lots of fluids, so you want to resolve this quickly. The patient should have received discharge instructions that include what to expect, and usually a telephone number of the recovery room nurses to call with questions. If not, go to the ER, making sure you get authorization from your insurer if that is required.
Good luck.  (+ info)

antidepressants with urinary retention side effect?

I tried taking trazadone for sleep for awhile - the doctor told me it also had antidepressant properties, and with family history of depression and nearly all the symptoms myself, I was hopeful about it. About five or six weeks in, I started to get horrible urinary retention symptoms. I was panicked thinking I was going nuts or something, and trying to hide the problem from my fiance because I thought there was something gross going on with me. Then I read that was one of the rarer side effects. Sure enough, within two days of stopping it, the symptoms lessened a lot and continued to lessen over a week or two (still weren't perfect). It had also killed my sex drive.

I started zoloft two days ago for the depression and the urinary retention symptoms just got much worse again. Way worse. I'm really unhappy about this. i initially didn't think zoloft had urinary problems as a symptom but, upon a more thorough check just now, it does. What antidepressants might be options for me at this point?

i have tried drinking lots of water, taking a hot bath, and using the chi machine... im out of ideas and in a LOT of pain

Try cranberry juice, it helps the kidneys to function better. Also, try vitamin B6, which is inexpensive and can be bought at a health food store or drug store. It helps as well. Maybe you're low in B vitamins.  (+ info)

TURP did not work. Urinary retention still present. Why?

My father aged 77, who is a diabetic (does not take insulin) and a patient of high blood pressure had some urinary retention a few months ago. He was temporarily catheterized, put on Flomax and Fenestride medications, which failed to function well on him and therefore on Thursday his urologist performed a trans-urethral resection of the prostate on him.
He was kept in the hospital for 2 days, and a triple lumen catheter was inserted to irrigate and drain the bladder after the surgical procedure was complete.
He was released just a few hours after the catheter was removed, and he is having urinary retention again.
I will speak with his urologist, but any input would be greatly appreciated.

Why is he having urinary retention post the TURP procedure?
Thanks

Adderall & Urinary Retention- Why?

I have been taking Adderall XR for about one month, and for the last four of those days my dose upwardly changed to 20mg (1x day). This is when I noticed in addition to already peeing a lot because obviously it's a stimulant drug, I could barely pee at all. Suspecting that it was Adderall I stopped taking the drug for five days. Overall, for the first two days I was very bloated and extremely, extremely uncomfortable; but by the fifth day I was back to normal. The next following day (Monday) I started back on Adderall and by late Tuesday afternoon I could already feel my urinary capabilities diminishing and uncomfortableness returning.

I want to know why- on physiological level, what biological/chemical components are responsible and how they are at work to create this current dilemma.

I also want to know if there is a possibility out there to remedy this side effect, by means of introducing another medication or some other type of supplement into the equation.

Are there other available medications equivalent in matching Adderall XR's effectiveness in treating ADHD hyperactive and inattentive types, minus the bladder retention of course (or will this problem recur with any stimulant drug I take)?

Unfortunately my doctor is slow in contacting me, but anyways I welcome explanation attempts or shared similar experiences. -Thanks
