Why is it that sinus infections can be so hard to get rid of sometimes?

Is it because or the location or the infection? In other words can the sinuses be an easy place for organisms to hide or escape from the immune system? I have allergies and as long as I take what the doctor ordered; I am fine for the most part. But if I do not keep my allergies in check; I can get an infection alot easier. I haven't had a sinus infection in a long long time. I just lack understanding on why so many people suffer from this and why these types of infections can be so persistant.

Sinusitis
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
(Redirected from Sinus infections)

Sinusitis is an inflammation of the paranasal sinuses, which may or may not be as a result of infection, from bacterial, fungal, viral, allergic or autoimmune issues. Newer classifications of sinusitis refer to it as rhinosinusitis, taking into account the thought that inflammation of the sinuses cannot occur without some inflammation of the nose as well (rhinitis).

There are several paired paranasal sinuses, including the frontal, ethmoid, maxillary and sphenoid sinuses. The ethmoid sinuses can also be further broken down into anterior and posterior, the division of which is defined as the basal lamella of the middle turbinate. In addition to the acuity of disease, discussed below, sinusitis can be classified by the sinus cavity which it affects:

Maxillary sinusitis - can cause pain or pressure in the maxillary (cheek) area (e.g., toothache, headache)

Frontal sinusitis - can cause pain or pressure in the frontal sinus cavity (located behind/above eyes), headache

Ethmoid sinusitis - can cause pain or pressure pain between and/or behind eyes, headache

Sphenoid sinusitis - can cause pain or pressure behind the eyes, but often refers to the vertex of the head(J01.3/J32.3)
Recent theories of sinusitis indicate that it often occurs as part of a spectrum of diseases that affect the respiratory tract (i.e. - the "one airway" theory) and is often linked to asthma. All forms of sinusitis may either result in, or be a part of, a generalized inflammation of the airway so other airway symptoms such as cough may be associated with it.

By duration
Sinusitis can be acute (going on less than four weeks), subacute (4-12 weeks) or chronic (going on for 12 weeks or more).

All three types of sinusitis have similar symptoms, and are thus often difficult to distinguish.  (+ info)

Are there any ways to reduce external swelling resulting from yeast infections?

I have recently taken a single dose treatment for a yeast infections, but I still have a little bit of external swelling. I was just wondering if anyone had a suggestion for reducing the swelling.
----------

external swelling exactly where? It may be something not related to yeast infection as that is generally internal with some itching and irritation externally. If you got the meds from a doctor and you are still concerned, call and speak to him/her or go back.  (+ info)

What can I do to avoid obtaining infections while getting my nails done?

I read in a magazine article that you could get an infection in your nails when you get them done at one of those nail salons. They named some things I could do to avoid that and also what I could do to know if the parlor was following the proper sanitary and hygenic guidelines to avoid causing the infections, but I can't remember any of them.

I would really appreciate it if you could tell me all or some of those things, if you know them. Thanks!
I'm talking about my own nails. When I get them filed and painted at a beauty parlor.
----------

Ask the salon you go to about how they sterilize their tools and their cleaning maintenance between use. You can even ask them if clients have complained about infection. If they are not helpful or do not want to disclose anything, you might not want to go to the salon. If by chance you do end up getting an infection, try Mycocide NS, Anti-fungal. It's a top nail treatment product. See this source for why. http://www.beautyqa.com/  (+ info)

How do you get rid of fungal infections on the feet?

My boyfriend has terrible feet and doesn't take good care of them. He has fungal infections on most of his toenails and on the skin of his feet as well. I'm looking for ways that we can get rid of the infection. Preferably hollistic but I wouldn't mind buying some sort of anti fungal cream if anyone knows of anything. I've heard that teatree oil can help. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!
----------

First he needs to use something to get rid of the existing infection,
but he also needs to change his shoe wearing habits. He needs to go barefoot as much as possible. The problem is caused by having his feet encased in closed shoes for too much time each day. The spores of the fungus are found everywhere, but the reason they usually only take hold on feet is because they only thrive in a warm, sweaty, enclosed environment.  (+ info)

Does Monistat really work for Vaginal Infections? & please tell symptoms of vaginal infections?

I'm 13. This is my first vaginal infection. It's either a yeast or bacterial infection.

Please tell me the symptoms of both types of infections.
Also, does Monistat work for relieving itch?
Or do you have other suggestions?
Thanks! I really need help!

& i already talked to my mom about it, and i am not going to the doctor.
----------

I used Monistat, my doctor told me too. It really works for relieving the itch, pretty fast. It's good and I think it's ok to use it if you have vaginal discharge more than usually and itchiness. Hope this helps.  (+ info)

My daughter has two ear infections how long until the antibiotics will start making her feel better?

My 6 month old has two ear infections, they prescribed amoxicillin. About how long does it take for her to start feeling some relief she is in so much pain and it kills me. We just started the prescription at 5am this morning whenever I rushed her to the hospital because of a 103 temp. anyways what have been your experiences with this?
----------

Antibiotics generally work very quickly. Usually one single dose can clear up an infection. But she is taking amoxicillin, and I'm assuming they prescribed that because she is so young and can't take anything else. Amoxicillin is pretty mild and does not work for most adults that well anymore. But I'm sure it will work for your baby just fine, and she should feel better within 24 hours.  (+ info)

How do you keep away bladder infections?

I keep getting bladder infections and I'm drinking loads and loads but when I wake up in the morning or the past 4 days Ive got it.
I'm new to the states, apart from uristat whats good?
----------

The best thing you can do to prevent bladder infections is to drink at least one glass of cranberry juice a day. It has to be 100% cranberry juice, not one of the mixed kind (ex: cranberry & raspberry). The mixed ones contain sugars that will actually worsen a bladder infection if you have one. You could alternatively take cranberry supplements, but drinking the juice is better if you can handle the taste.  (+ info)
