What is the best way to deal with Tourette's Syndrome in adult men?

My husband has TS. He was diagnosed as a child and has a moderate form of the disorder. He has OCD, severe mood swings, and both verbal & physical tics. He denies the OCD and has severe trouble coping with changes in routine. Does anyone know of a physician in the Pittsburgh, PA who can effectively treat this disorder? Thank you for your help. Sincerely, A Frustrated Wife

why are people so ignorant about tourette syndrome?

The first answer here has proven my point. I dont mind that people dont know about it, i dont know a lot about other conditions, but i know that i dont know about them, and dont pretend too. TS is not a disease, and swearing (copralalia) is not affected by medication.
Also, i am at university, and i would never make fun of a plump kid who is on medication due to kidney problems, my best friend is in this situation and is currently awaiting a kidney transplant.
----------

The same reason they are ignorant of many other medical conditions...fear. Fear of the unknown. Also, it's easier to ignore something that does not affect you personally.

It is amazing to me the amount of GARBAGE that people will tolerate in the name of political correctness, but a person that is just a little but different is made fun of, bullied and (the worst one in my opinion), excluded.

People will not usually wise up until they, or someone they know are affected. I know more than I want to about Tourettes now than I did before my son was diagnosed with this Neurological condition.  (+ info)

is it possible for an adult to develop tourette's syndrome?

like if an someone in their 20s or 30s had some sort of head injury or something. if prior to that they had no symptoms of tourette's and then all of a sudden they started to have tics and all that. is that possible?
----------

While you can develop tics, Tourette's onset is only at childbirth from genetic means.  (+ info)

Where are some treatment centers for combined Tourette's Syndrome/OCD?

I already know about the ones at Duke and Harvard. I was wondering if there are any others. Many of the numerous doctors I've already been to still think that Tourette's is just another movement disorder, like Huntington's Chorea, and not an obsessive-compulsive-like disorder. In France, where it was "discovered," it has long been thought to be closely related to OCD, but many doctors still don't know this. I'm particularly interested in finding a doctor who is an expert in Habit Reversal Therapy (HRT).

lfahn25 is correct. Great answer there!

Tourette Syndrome is often accompanied by other conditions. This may not be exactly what you are looking for, but it may help get you there. This web site it dedicated to the conditions that can accompany TS. Best wishes.

Why do people think Tourette's Syndrome is all about cursing?

& that Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is all about hand-washing & staying clean, & that Bipolar is all about being happy or sad, & that schizophrenia is all about delusions & multiple personality, & that depression is all about suicide?

There's more symptoms to these disorders than the ones listed.
----------

Probably because those are the most dramatic things about the disorders, the things you'd notice first.

People tend to simplify things- and lots of people talk big big big about things they don't know very much about! The reverse of that is, it's amazing how much people will believe you, if you just sound confident enough! I find it both kind of funny and kinda scary...

PS- multiple personality and schizophrenia are totally different things!  (+ info)

my son is 12 and I think he has Tourette syndrome, what to do?

I've checked out a couple sites, and they say medication, and/or therapy. Has anyone had any experience with this. His is not severe, but he makes sounds in his throat, and some other small ticks.

Thanks
I'm not asking what to do with him, but if anyone out there has any experience with this kinda of thing.
----------

i would first see his dr to #1 confirm that he indeed does have it and #2 get their recommendation of what is the best treatment route.

after all of that then i would get a second opinion to compare it with and then make an informed decision about treatment.  (+ info)

Are neurologists or psychotherapists a greater authority on Tourette's Syndrome?

Why did my neurologist refer me to a psychotherapist to get my diagnosis?
My neurologist assumed it was Tourette's but a specialist such as himself referred me to another specialist (psychotherapist) and it was there where I got my official diagnosis.
----------

Probably because it's only fairly recently that they've discovered that it's a physical cause, not a personality thing and the training was being given more to psychotherapists than neurologists.

They are also now saying that Tourette's is an Autism Spectrum Disorder.

My husband has Tourette's and apart from some embarrassing behaviour from time to time and his impulsiveness sometimes causing problems, it's not a major issue. The only people for whom it becomes a major issue are the people where it interferes very heavily with them doing the things they want to and I think it's more likely, as far as I understand from reading I have done, a co-morbid such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder that is the real culprit. (A co-morbid is another syndrome often found with the main one.)

Medication definitely helps. My husband discovered that without medication he can tic enough with his eyes that he didn't realise he ended up on the wrong side of the road so medication is essential to allow him to drive. At the time, he didn't know he had Tourette's so he didn't realise what the problem was, only knew he ended up on the wrong side. His girlfriend made the connection the second (and thankfully last!) time it happened.  (+ info)

My son has tourette syndrome was wondering if someone has dealt with stomach spasms as a tic ?

They are pretty frequent and I think it may be a reaction to a food but if anyone has any help to offer it would be appreciated. Thank you
