Has anyone had a single tooth porcelain veneer?

Are you happy with the results? I'm in the process of changing one of my very front teeth due to discoloration. Some people have said I should do the two front teeth so it won't "look funny." Others say that a good dentist can get the job done with one. I don't see the sense in destroying a perfectly good tooth and spending more money if I don't have to. Are you happy with your results?
----------

i'm a dentist and i'll tell u the clinical point of view:
yes it's wrong to destroy the other tooth, if the veneer shape and shade were perfect u'll be fine.. and to correct ur words when u said:" good dentist can get job done with one".... it's not the work of dentist the shape and shade "color " of the veneer.. in fact it's the dental technician skills and experiance... good technician means good veneers...
anyway there is a job for the dentist to prepare the tooth corrictly and to give the advices for the technician and to refuse not matching shades and shapes.. but still the technician has the main Job in that....
summary: a good dentist choose a good technician to make a good veneer....  (+ info)

Help..tooth discoloration?

I am currently 16 years old and had tooth discoloration since May. I visited my orthodontist as soon as i discovered the discoloration and it appears that my tooth had no apparent problem. No abnormal movement, pain or any other weakness; just the appearance. To my amazement, he said he would do root canal. But i declined since there was no serious problem. So i left it alone and thought hmm..maybe it will get better?
I thought about bleaching but the discoloration is within the tooth so i don't think it would do any good.
oh and i don't think there was any trauma to the tooth when i first discovered my tooth problem.
the discoloration is on one of my lateral incissors, bottom jaw.
so what are some other alternatives to restore the color besides root canal? is it serious?
----------

Though there are quite a few alternatives to restore the colour. I strongly feel that you should meet another dentist before deciding how to tacle the colour.

My 28 mos old has a dark which looked like a shadow 4 mos ago on the back of her front tooth. Is it decay?

My daughters teeth look great. We brush often. Lately it appears there is more plaque build up. Unfortunately she has had more sugar in the past couple months. The grey spot behind her tooth appeared like a shadow of the natural indentation of her tooth. But now the grey area has spread. Her teeth look pearly white otherwise, I would not have noticed this discoloration unless she tilted her head back. Her other teeth look fine.
----------

It could be decay, or she could have bumped the tooth but either way, you need to get her into see your dentist or a Pediatric Dentist. They will want to take an x-ray and look at that tooth more closely. Getting her in before she has problems is vital and will help to not create a phobic later if this can be treated relatively easily. Best of luck  (+ info)

Tooth discoloration due to Antibiotic?

I have been taking AMOXCILLIN Anti-Biotic and I finished my dose but one of the side effects are Tooth Discoloration (turning yellow to brown)

A few of my teeth have some tooth discoloration.
I don't know what to do.

I have braces as well.

I tried brushing my teeth with Baking soda and it barley did anything.

I brushed my teeth like 100 times and nothing is changing!

Is this permanent? What should I do?
What does wearing of tooth enamel do? Does it like ware down your teeth?
It isnt MAJOR, like a whole tooth but its tiny little spots on a few teeth
Is it fixable?
----------

I agree with Dr. Albert. Unfortunately tetracycline gray staining is internal and is difficult to correct to a great degree with bleaching. Sometimes only porcelain veneers or crowns will really whiten the teeth.  (+ info)

Strange tooth discoloration?

I was brushing my teeth after eating lunch today, after I'm done I always check my teeth to make sure I didn't miss anything that I can obviously see. While I was looking, I noticed that the back (side nearest the tongue) of one of my bottom front teeth has an area where it is slightly discolored a very light gray color. Flossed between the teeth thinking it was food and it didn't come out, scraped the area with my fingernail and it didn't come off then either.

I tried to inspect this closer and held up a small book light to the tooth. Once under the light the gray area disappears and becomes very white, whiter than the rest of my tooth. On closer inspection, there is also a very small gray area on the neighboring tooth that turns very white once hit with light.

I can only see the gray spot when looking at the tooth at a certain angle by changing my head position, or by moving the light around at different angles, but most angles the light held up to it makes the gray disappear into a very white color.

What could this discoloration be?
I do have a dentist appointment next week for a check-up and cleaning. :)

The grayish discoloration is more towards the side of the tooth, its definitely not at the gum line, its up a little bit off the gumline and more towards the side of the tooth where it meets the tooth next to it. However, when I shine the lite on it the bright white part does extend to the gumline, though without the light I can only see the gray which is definitely not on the gumline. Hope that helps some.
----------

It sounds like it could be calculus which is calcified plaque that has adhered to the tooth at the gum line. I suggest you schedule an appointment and have a hygienist clean your teeth as this is the only way it will be removed.  (+ info)

Does adult use of fluoride toothpaste cause tooth discoloration (fluorosis)?

Fluorisis is caused by excessive amounts of fluoride. As a result your teeth can develop intrinsic staining. In regards to toothpastes, the quantity of fluoride present is obviously FDA regulated, therefore it's low dosage is incapable of causing fluorosis. If staining has occured on your teeth, I'd explore the possibility of it being either hypercalcification, or leaking existing restorations.  (+ info)

How to prevent tooth transparency caused by bleaching – don’t want to give up coffee!?

Veneers for teeth not possible for me. Is there a mechanical or chemical shield to prevent discoloration or a make-up type product to cover up? Or another product to whiten that doesn't cause enamel erosion?
----------

Commercial tooth whiteners use hydrogen peroxide and are expensive and inconvenient. A cheap and natural tooth whitening home remedy uses few strawberries but certain precautions have to be taken. I found the information at http://www.aches.in/toothwhitening.html  (+ info)

ROOT CANAL TOOTH DISCOLORATION, is it dangerous to my health?

I had a root canal done several months ago and for the last few days I've been smelling a kind of off smell now and then. Today I realized it was my breath. my tooth is discolored from the middle to the gum line, darkish. I'm concerned the infection has come back, or is this normal discoloration for a root canal and my bad breath is the result of something else?
Thank you all for your answers. I've since had it checed out.
I'd had it done via the public health system in Asustralia, and it was a protracted tooth issue over 7 months of returning. I have very deep teath and they had to get a internal file/drill specially made in Germany, and the tooth was cracked sliglty in an area that the xray can't show. A total of 5 seperate procedures.

Anyway the constant opening and closing of the tooth has caused the discolouration as well as the amalgum used to seal it. It was re checked yesterday and everything is fine. no infection! yay!

Hello

Gil is right, as the tooth has lost its blood supply (the nerve) the tooth is actually dead.
Normally when the tooth is dead it will change to a black or brown colour. You have two options:

1- Get a crown
2- Get the inside of the tooth bleached (this requires the tooth to be redrilled)

The bad breath could also be from an infection, however, I suspect that this is not from the root canal tooth this is because once a root canal is finished it is sealed from the top.

Could also mean that the root canal was not done correctly, or the tooth has fractured due to being brittle once the blood supply is lost, thus allowing the introduction of infection.

Best to be sure and go back to your dentist to get a check and some X-Rays.

Hope this helps.  (+ info)

What can I do about the discoloration of my tooth's crown?

I chipped half of my front tooth a few years back and the dentist fixed it with a porcelain crown. Now, a lot of time has passed and the crown became discolored (a faint but sort of noticeable yellow). I do not smoke by the way. The discoloration is not all over, just around the area that was "glued" on, creating a band of yellow in the middle of the whole tooth. My other teeth are white and clean looking so I really want to fix the discoloration. Do anyone have any ideas? The whitening strips' manuals say they don't work on crowns.
Thank you thetoofg..., but actually, my crown was placed around the year 2000, 8 years ago. So the material should be superior.
----------

Many of the materials back in the 80's and before are not even close to the stuff they have now. For one, cements now bond to the dentin part of our teeth which makes the seal better and keeping it from saliva, sodas, wine, etc. And two the cements today are actually colored a bit to make a crown or veener even look more natural.

The only thing for you is to remove the old crown and replace it with a more superior and better looking crown. Nothing with change the color of the crown. And, if it's a front upper tooth, I'd suggest doing a veneer on the tooth next to it to get even a better match.

Take care
