Can iron supplements cause discoloration in tooth enamel?

Yes. It can turn them a grayish-black color. Depending on how the supplement is taken you may be able to avoid this. Ask a pharmacist. If the damage is already done then try teeth whitening.  (+ info)

Can the antibiotics commonly prescribed for children's ear infections cause tooth decay or discoloration?

My two-year-old has had severe chronic ear infections, and we finally got tubes put in. Before that, he was on tons of antibiotics - three 30-day courses of Septra, several 10-day courses of Omnicef, and many 10-day courses of Amoxil. His teeth are very gray, and I always assumed that this is because he's very resistant to brushing. We have had more success with brushing lately but for a long time it was a non-starter. But then someone told me it might be the antibiotics. Does anyone know if these drugs can cause gray discoloration, and if so, should I take him to the pediatric dentist?

IF YOUR CHILD WAS GIVEN A TETRACYCLINE BASED ANTIBIOTIC BEFORE THE ERUPTION OF THE PERMANENT TEETH, THEN THE ADULT TEETH WILL HAVE PERMANENT STAINING WHICH CAN'T BE EASILY REMOVED.
NONE OF THE MEDS USED NOT OMNICEF, SEPTRA OR AMOXIL ARE KNOWN TO CAUSE STAINING OF ADULT OR PRIMARY TEETH, THE STAINING IS CAUSED BY LACK OF PROPER BRUSHING.
THIS CHILD NEEDS A PROFESSIONAL CLEANING AND A PEDODONTIC DENTIST IS THE RIGHT ANSWER.  (+ info)

Tooth discoloration or cavity?

On the inside of one of my back molars it looks kind of dark. I thought maybe it was a cavity, BUT it hasn't bothered me or anything. I haven't had any pain, sensitivity or anything. Could this just be a really discolored tooth or a cavity that just might not be too bad.
----------

if there is translucency in enamel and you see a dark shadow, most likely there is a cavity. Some people may not experience pain even if their is a large decay. Its best to get this taken care of or it may lead to tooth loss, need for crown, or perhaps reach the pulp chamber , leading to a root canal treatment.  (+ info)

Tooth discoloration due to tetracycline?

How can this be treated. Are veneers only real solution?
----------

I'm a dentist.

Absolutely. Tetracycline gets deposited in the mineral structure of your developing teeth and your bones, causing a greenish/grayish color. This is what we call an "intrinsic" stain, which is very tough to treat.

You can try to have your teeth whitened by your dentist. He/she will almost certainly inform you that results may be limited at best. I would nonetheless recommend it, because it's much cheaper than placing veneers and should it fail you will not have spent more than $500 on the process.

Veneers, however, more often than not produce truly remarkable cosmetic results for all kinds of aesthetic problems. If the bleaching fails, you can still look forward to having nice teeth.  (+ info)

If you're at stage 2 of tooth decay(discoloration at base of teeth), how can you stop decay from going farther

http://www.db.od.mah.se/car/data/cariesser.html

Go to that link to see what I am speaking of. If teeth are slightly decayed, can you stop the decay from going further?
----------

Your teeth are made up of many things. The outer surface is enamel. Under the enamel is dentin. If the decay hasn't reached the dentin it is possible to be reversed. By the looks of the picture the damage is only in the enamel. If this is the case, keep the area clean. Make sure you are brushing and flossing daily and add fluoride to your routine. This can help restrengthen the enamel and not become a cavity.  (+ info)

How is it possible to get a cavity on a tooth that has a sealant?

I went to the dentist yesterday and it turns out i have my very first cavity on the top of one of my back teeth. The thing is i have a sealant on that tooth. How can i have a cavity? I'm guessing it's under the sealant because i can't see any decay or discoloration on that tooth.
----------

yes you can. i am currently experiencing the same problem with mine..even though it was sealed, it developed a little hole. then i now have to go and get it looked after.
So go do the same and don't let the little hole become a huge pain.  (+ info)

What is the best teeth whitening tooth paste?

What is the best teeth whitening tooth paste for discoloration caused by drinking tea and coffee etc (not smoking though, if that makes a difference). Please state if you know from personal experience or if you heard about it.
----------

Arm and Hammer Advance White. It comes with a shade guide to compare teeth color before and after the tube and guarentees 3 shades whiter with one tube. Worked for me, but it does taste like baking soda!  (+ info)

How long does it take a broken tooth to discolor?

My daughter knocked her front baby tooth loose. The dentist said to watch it for discoloration to see if the root was broken. How long will it take to discolor? It has been a week and I haven't noticed anything yet.
----------

Oh, this could take weeks or even a couple months... sometimes there's a trauma and the nerve doesn't die for a year or more!

The good news is, it's a baby tooth, and will eventually be replaced. You didn't say how old your daughter is, but you want to leave that tooth in as long as possible to help guide the adult tooth into the right place and to hold the space and prevent crookedness.

even discoloration isn't a big deal - it only needs treatment if there are signs of infection on the tooth AFTEr the nerve dies. This would look like pain, swelling, a "pimple" like area on the gums in front of the tooth. This would then need a "pulpotomy" which is dentist talk for a kind of baby root canal. no big deal.

good luck!  (+ info)

ROOT CANAL TOOTH DISCOLORATION?

I had a root canal a few years back on the top incisor (top front tooth).
Since then the tooth has gone through some discoloration (this happens to the tooth after a root canal). Does anyone have any suggestions as to what i can do about this? I'm a college student so there is a budget.. Can somebody please help me out. Any professionals out there? =(((((((9
----------

It sounds like your root canal treatment failed. It happens sometimes. Your tooth likely fused to the bone. I would ask your dentist about internal bleaching of the tooth and some composite work. You couold maybe get a veneer on that tooth depending on which one it is but that is expensive any you will likely have to do multiple teeth to match. Do not let any dentist talk you into removing the tooth unless you have severe resorption. That is a process in which the tooth dissolves within the bone. Your tooth would be loose if that happened. You do not necessarily need a crown. Many dentists don't put crowns on front teeth immediately after root canals because it isn't always needed and it takes away important tooth structure. That gives you time to see if you need just some composite (tooth colored) fillings, a veneer, a crown or even an implant. EVerything you do to your teeth is permanent, so you should be as conservative as possible when dealing with these things.

I had the same problem with my front tooth following a car accident.

The guy going on about gutta percha and infection is ranting, don't listen to him. He didn't even answer your question. FYI: Amalgam is not used in crowns or restorations involving cosmetics, even pfm. I don't even know a dentist who will touch amalgam now.  (+ info)
