I have a fissured tongue [I think?]?

So I have always had a "funny" tongue. My mom even said that it has always been that way. I'm thirteen and today I found out its called fissured tongue. I have like cracks in my tongue and my friends say my "tastebuds are HUGE". People have always thought my tongue was odd and funny. So, I have a few questions.

Is there any possible way to fix that so that my tongue is smooth or will it stay that way forever?
Is there any reason for me having fissured tongue? No one else in my famiyl has it except for me.
I'm prude so I was wondering, when hooking up can someone tell that the person has fissured tongue? If so, is that a turn off? D:
----------

The fissures in your tongue are what cause what we thought was an "allergic reaction" to apples and other acidic foods. ;D

That's all ah got.

crohn's disease - fissured tongue?

i've had crohns disease for a few years but have recently developed a fissured tongue.. it is really painful.. is this because of the crohn's?? i am going to contact my gp tomorrow but just wondered if anyone else with crohn's had this??
----------

I haven't really heard about this, but...I did find this interesting article:

Is orofacial granulomatosis in children a feature of Crohn's disease?

Khouri JM, Bohane TD, Day AS.

Department of Gastroenterology, Sydney Children's Hospital, and School of Women's and Children's Health, University of New South Wales, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

Orofacial granulomatosis is a term generally used to describe lip swelling secondary to an underlying granulomatous inflammatory process. Granulomatous cheilitis is the histopathological description of such inflammation occurring in the lips and surrounding tissues. Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome (a triad of orofacial swelling, facial paralysis and a fissured tongue) is one manifestation of orofacial granulomatosis, which more commonly presents as granulomatous cheilitis alone. Oral Crohn's disease also belongs to the entity of orofacial granulomatosis. Most reported cases of orofacial granulomatosis have been in adults and some in adolescents. We present six children presenting with orofacial granulomatosis at an early age (range 5-8 y) whose course points towards the development of Crohn's disease. Conclusion: Orofacial granulomatosis in the paediatric population may be an initial manifestation of Crohn's disease and so careful surveillance is recommended.  (+ info)

I am looking for a proven healing method for fissured tongue.?

I am 16, and Ive had fissured tongue for as long as I can remember.
Ive read that there is no known cause for this? but Ive also read that there are theoretical causes such as too much bad bacteria, and not enough good bacteria... I believe it comes from the intestines,
If this is the cause then would Culturelle or Acidophilus help?

But there are a lot of different opinions on the condition.
" Fissured tongue is a benign condition that does not require any specific treatment. Patients should be encouraged to brush the top surface of their tongue to remove any debris that may cause irritation or infection when lodged between the grooves."
that's what I got from http://dermnetnz.org/site-age-specific/fissured-tongue.html
one more thing, another in my family has this condition, my mother developed it later in life.
any help you can give, thanks.

Can Cracked/Fissured tongue heal it's cracks?

I have had cracked tongue eversince I can remember. It has always bothered me but while I was getting older I kinda found truce with it as I saw that it was OK and people didn't really notice or cared about it (especially girls of course). But now when I look into mirror when I brush my teeth I can see that my condition has significently worsened perhaps nearly 100% I have more and new cracks on my tongue, the old cracks are bigger and deeper, it's just frustrating. I also suffer like my father from bleeding gums, when I brush my teeth they bleed not all of them some of them, sometimes it's better sometimes it's worse, I tried all kinds of tooth pastes and mouth washes, it doesn't do much.

I do have a problem with morning breath, I think it's caused by breathing with your mouth when you sleep (I was told by number of people that I am an incredible snorer) and I suppose while I am asleep my gums could bleed too and make this unpleasent morning breath.

When I brush my teeth in the morning everything is fine, its just I can taste this sour taste in my throat onwards, even when I wake up it seems as if alot of this bad odour came out of my throat by I am not sure though

My overall oral hygiene is very good I think, I do flossing now and then and brush my teeth twice or thrice a day.

Just today it feels like the taste buds on the tip of my tongue are kinda burning/irritated, I must confess I do like spicy food sometimes, by the way I'm a male 26 yrs

Q no: 1 - Is there a way my tongue can heal it cracks or at least what should I do to prevent more carck from happening

Q no: 2 What can I do to stop this awful morning breath, I don't wanna scare a girl away when she wakes up in the morning next to me, besides it's not fair since I take care of my mouth.

Please I would really appreciate only genuine answers from people who have experience with this.

I went to an oral specialist today for fissures. He told me that fissures are commonly caused by a vitamin B12 deficiency. He also said that it is more the cause of fissures in women, so it may
not be the same in your case. Try taking B12 vitamins and see I'd
it works. They are really cheap. $6 a bottle. It's worth a shot.
The reason for the bad breath is that bacteria and food particles can get stuck in the fissures
and depending how deep they are it can be hard to
clean.
Try the vitamins. It's worth a shot!!  (+ info)

Do the spots from geographic tongue always move?

I've had this one spot on my tongue that's smooth and looks like geographic tongue but it never moves and it always stays the same. (1 month)

also, i have fissures and stuff on my tongue, not bad (like the ones you see on the internet) but i don't know.
----------

Yes; the other name for geographic tongue is actually benign migratory glossitis. Reason being, geographic tongue heals spontaneously. The individual lesions often heal at the same time new ones are forming, changing the appearance of the tongue over hours or days. This gives rise to the appearance that the map is migrating across the face of the tongue. Although benign, this condition may last for months -- or even longer -- and often recurs.

What tongue splitting method produces the longest split?

I have already looked into all of the side effects and complications, so for all of you out there who just want to leave a comment like thats gross or how can you do that. i dont need to hear it.

I am wanting to get a tongue lengthening and split. No it is not for sexual reasons. All i want to know is which method has the least amount of regrowth and the prices of the method.

I have seen some splits that are just on the tip and they look odd to me. i already have a pretty long tongue but i am hoping if i get the lengthening with the split i have better chances of a longer split and less regrowth.

And just a little rant to all of the people that are freaked out by it and say that children will run screaming, that is ridiculous. Certain people freak about a tongue split but they wouldnt run screaming from someone with a disease injected in there forehead so that they can look like robocop.
----------

one way that can help limit the regrowth is anchoring it with a large-gauge piercing as an anchor for it... as far as the *best* method, since this isn't exactly a mainstream mod, there hasn't been a particular one that has been determined to be the *best*... many splits have to be re-cut after the healing period is done, due to regrowth....

talk to a reputible mod practitioner... ask to see both fresh and healed shots of the work... if they can produce that, and you are happy with it, after considering the risks, go for it...

Good luck, and I hope you're happy with whatever method you choose!  (+ info)

How do you keep your tongue on the roof of your mouth when you have a bad habit of tongue thrusting?

Even though I have braces and retainers for my tongue thrusting, I still find myself placing my tongue on the front of the retainers when I swallow. It's extremely hard trying to swallow with my tongue on the roof of my mouth behind the retainers.

Do any of you have any suggestions that you can offer?
----------

There are some exercises that you can perform that will teach you how to reform your swallowing patterns. Ask the orthodontist to explain them to you. Good luck  (+ info)

Can a tongue ring cause your lower front teeth to shift forward by the pressure from the barbell?

I've had my tongue pierced for four years. In the last 6 months I've noticed that my front bottom row of teeth has shifted forward and now have a couple gaps behind them. You can't see it when I smile or talk, but it still worries me that it's going to get worse.

Do you think this is happening because of the tongue ring or something else? (I do not have wisdom teeth on the bottom so it's not that.)

Anyone else had this happen to them?
----------

I can guarantee it isn't from the tongue ring. The only thing a tongue ring will do to your teeth is chip them up. Teeth are always shifting, until they find an equilibrium from the force of your tongue, your lips on the other side, and your opposing teeth which can push them either way depending on what type of bite you have. How old are you? you could still be growing. I really don't know what you mean by gaps behind them. either way, if it really concerns you, you can see an orthodontiist for a free consultation.  (+ info)
