how to stop itchiness and swelling of a tick bite?

I got a tick bite about two weekends ago on my neck and i got a bull's eye rash around it. So i went to the doctors and im on antibiotics. I just started them today and my rash seems to be getting worse. Its really itchy and sore. Its really swollen and i feel like its getting bigger. How can i stop the itchiness and swelling?
----------

I hear you. Same thing happened to me around the same time and then my 10 year old son was playing outside yesterday and got bitten too. Ugh.

Check with your doc first, but try benadryl cream. You'll find it in the first aid section but we are both finding it to releive the itch immediately!

It may or may not interfere with the antibiotics, that's why I said check first. He was vaccinated against Hep A the same day he started using it, but anti-b's are another story!

Feel better soon :)  (+ info)

what are the chances of getting Colorado Tick Flu if you are bit by a tick?

Hello - my husband was bit by a tick in Grand County Colorado Yesterday. I would have to say that the tick was actually on him for about 4 hours or so. He removed it properly and cleaned the site and his hands. What are the chances that he will get CTF? thanks!
----------

You should have him see a doctor. They'll give him some treatment for it, and advise to watch the area of the bite.  (+ info)

Where do you send a tick to see if it has lyme disease?

I jusgt pulled a tick out from me and need to know the address to send the tick to see if it has Lyme Disease. Please dont give any nonsense answers. I know to track symptoms and to call a doctor. Im just wondering what the address is.
----------

All you need to do is get a blood test for Lyme disease at your doctor's office. You don't need the tick. This happened to me last summer.  (+ info)

How Long does it take for the "bulls Eye" to come up to show you have lyme disease from a deer tick?

If you get bit by a deer tick, it might show a ring around it to show lyme disease. How long does it take for the ring to appear?
----------

Typically, from 1-2 weeks, though it could show up with hours and could take a month. The important thing to emphasize, however, is that the bull's-eye only appears in an estimated 50% of cases of Lyme. So just because there hasn't been a rash does NOT mean you are free and clear.

Can I give flea and tick meds to my animals while pregnant?

I just applied a once a month flea & tick drop to all 3 of my dogs backs. I have also been bathing these dogs with a flea and tick shampoo. Of course I washed my hands afterwards, but there is still residual chemical left on the animals. The active ingredient in the drops is phenothrin. I'm concerned what kind of exposure to these pesticides is harmful for my fetus. I am 9 weeks pregnant. Please, I need some advice on whether it is safe to continue use of the products and/or recommendations on how to keep my baby and my dogs healthy.
----------

We had this same concern when I was pregnant with our daughter. We spoke with someone at our vet's office. We use Frontline and were told that once the meds appear to be dry, it's safe to touch the dog (we were told 5-10 minutes and the med would be dry). Just make sure that you wash your hands after you apply the med and you should be fine.

We don't give our dog flea baths, so this didn't come up with us. You should give your OB and your vet a call and ask their advice concerning the shampoo. I'm sure both have heard these questions before and have answers at the ready.

Good luck!  (+ info)

What is the best thing to put on a tick bite?

I removed a tick the other day and I believe the head is still there, what is the best thing to put on it to remove the head?
----------

Dip a cotton ball in a liquid soap and put it on the bite. Wait 10-15 mins and move the cotton ball. You'll see the tick is going to be out. Good Luck!  (+ info)

How come i never got lyme disease from a tick even though i was bit by one?

when i was 4 yrs old my parents found a tick in my head half way under my scalp, but i never got lyme disease, how come? can a reg blood test tell you if you have it or not? or is their a special test you have to take to know if you are infected with the disease?
----------

Not all ticks carry Lyme. That being said, there are many cases where people were bit by ticks and didn't fall ill until years later. It appears that sometimes the bacteria can go "underground"--perhaps held at bay by your immune system--only to burst forth much later.

Are you experiencing symptoms now that seem like they could be Lyme-related? If so, it's worth educating yourself about the disease.

What are some effective ways to stop Chigger and tick bites from itching.?

I was in the woods last night and i got a bunch of chigger and tick bites probably about 35 to 40 of them so they itch and hurt really bad. I need some good ways to make them stop itching for a while. Thanks.
----------

For mosquito bites (im assuming this would cover chiggers and tick bites too), oddly enough, I use deodorant. It always works on me and its something you almost always have around the house!!   (+ info)

If I contract a disease from a tick, how long will it be before serious side effects set in?

I think that I was bitten by a tick recently. I see no rash or external markings and I don't think that I have any symptoms of tick-related diseases. If I did in fact contract Lyme-disease or a similar illness, how long will it be before serious, permanent side effects take effect?
----------

There's no easy answer to your question. For some people who get bit by an infected tick, the disease seems to go "underground" for months or even years. (Perhaps held at bay by the immune system?) Then, seemingly without warning, it can come roaring to life with horrendous symptoms.

So, what's a person who's been bit supposed to do? At the very least, you should educate yourself about tick-borne infections (it's not just Lyme--there are a bunch of nasty things you can get). Know what symptoms to look for, know what your treatment options are. Then you are in a better position to decide your course of action.
