What symptoms do I look for after a tick bite?

We pulled a very large tick off my 4 year old daughters head. She is acting fine at the moment. What should I look for to know if she needs to see a doctor?
----------

if the tick has been attached for more than a day it is possible that lime disease or even rockey mnt.spotted fever may be contracted.look for symptoms of flu, fatigue, swelling around bite that does not go away in a couple of days.i dont want to cause panic but if you are concerned take child to doctor for test. nothing to take lightly.  (+ info)

How long does it take for a RED RING to go around the tick on your skin?

Does it take a few days or a few weeks?? My mom just saw a tick in her yesterday and the ER left it in her leg..She is going to see another docotr right now, but how long does it take for the redness to appear around the tick? He legs have been swollen for 3 weeks, is it possible she has had it all this time?? And can it cause her legs to get swollen.....Thanks again!!
----------

Ticks start out very small, and can be on you for a little while before you notice they are there. Chances are she is having an allergic reaction to the tick bite. I don't have any idea why the ER would have left it in her leg, that seems stupid. If she can pull at least the body off with tweezers, or put alcohol or nail polish on it to smother it, that will help get it off...also she needs to take the tick body to the Dr. so he can analyze it and make sure it is not one that carries Lyme Disease. I live out in the country and ticks are very common out there. The red ring is caused by the irritation when the tick secretes a substance to help the blood unclot...I hope she is able to get better and get that thing off of her. I hate ticks... :(  (+ info)

How long can a tick survive without feeding on a host's blood?

If a tick is brought in the house by the dog how long can it survive without feeding?
----------

Ticks of course, need the blood of hosts to survive, but that could be anywhere from one day to a week, depending on the size and species of tick. I would guess it wouldn't be more than generally, four or six days or so without feeding.

From Wikipedia: "The life span of a tick can be relatively short. Some live only 3 months, but others can live up to a couple of years. It will attach itself to the mammal and feed for several days. Then, it drops off, molts (into a nymph), and waits for another host. On the new host, it repeats the first cycle of feeding, dropping off, and molting; this time to the adult stage. Adult ticks live in shrubs or tall grass and attach themselves to larger mammals until they are fully engorged. Then, they drop off and reattach themselves to a new host to feed."  (+ info)

Can a deer tick die while still embedded?

I found a deer tick in my daughters head. It did not move around or anything. The doctor removed the tick and said that it looked to be dead and they drew blood. We have not got the results back yet, but I want to know if a tick can die on you and still be embedded in the skin?
----------

Yes, most definitely. They stay in due to the many barbs on their mouth parts, like little fish hooks. Dead ticks would not fall out. At least, their heads would not fall out with the rest of their body.  (+ info)

What to do if a cat ended up getting flea and tick control for dogs on it and licked it off and got sick?

One of my friends helps this elderly lady out. the other day she asked them to put flea and tick control stuff on the cat. the next day the cat was sick and shaking. They looked at the container and it said it was for dogs. is it dangerous that the cat licked it of of her and what will happen to the cat? What should they do about the cat when they can't afford to take it to the vet? Will it kill the cat? What are some bad signs that could happen to the cat?
----------

sick and shaking? Sounds like it was poisoned. Call the nearest emergency pet clinic, and ask them for advice, the call is free so don't wait. Dying by poison will be very painful. Please call.

Good luck.  (+ info)

How can I remove a Tick from my Rectum without it Hurting to Badly?

It's all in the question.. I think details would probably make some people puke. I have a tick my rectum.. and it's attached to the hole itself. I am in the mountains of North Carolina on my laptop and I am about 2 days away from being back to civilization. I am hiking alone too, so no help from anyone here for at least 2 days.

Any ideas?
----------

I found this online..this is NOT from personal experience. At home, I always use tweezers.
**If you are out in the woods and don’t have a first aid kit with you, or tweezers at the very least, use a paper napkin, or whatever you have to cover your fingers while you try to gently dislodge the little traveler from his host. Make the point of pulling at the skin, not on the tick's body. Try not to crush the tick while pulling it out. If you don’t have a bottle or container you can seal it in for possible analyzation, crush it with something other than your fingers and then totally dispose of it. Ticks are very hard to kill, and they have a way of bouncing back to bite again.  (+ info)

The two tick species that carry lyme disease are Ixodes scapularis (eastern andupper midwestern US) and Ixodes pacificus (northwest US). The anterior portion of the female is dark brown and the abdomen appears reddish-brown in unengorged ticks and gray-tan in engorged ticks. hence the name "black-legged tick". Adult males appear entirly dark-brown.  (+ info)

Is there usually an itchy bump on your skin when you remove a tick?

I removed what I think was a tick from my skin and I started itching where the bite was. It looks like a mosquito bite. Is this normal?
----------

That is perfectly normal, however, I hope you were careful when you removed the tick because they can leave parts of their mouth inside your skin which could be causing irritation. Ticks also can carry nasty diseased, most of the time you will be fine, but if you start to experience a fever, rash, headache, or muscle or joint pains. These may be signs of a more serious disease. If you are having trouble walking or moving your legs. This may be a sign of tick paralysis. If any of those things become prevalent, seek medical attention immediately.  (+ info)
