How can you help someone cope with testicular cancer?

My boyfriend was recently diagnosed with testicular cancer. Of course they move fast in this situation and he is going to have his testicle removed next week. I was hoping to hear from someone who has either had or known someone who has been in the same situation. I know that he is going to feel a loss that I, as a woman, could not possibly understand. I just need to know how on earth I can help him through this and what are some of the obstacles we face ahead, after the surgery?

Thanks so much for your input.
----------

the physical aspects are that he will be in pain for quite a bit of time after the surgery. the psychological aspect is that he's having a testicle removed.. he may feel like less of a man for that as it has been known to happen. first off he's going to need your support. he will be miserable after wards and probably a jerk, but remember whatever he's saying he's not really trying to be mean or hurtful he's just lashing out from anger and fear. You have to be real patient with him.. don't hover, let him do as much as he can himself, and let him guide you towards what he needs. just watch for him falling into a depression and work with his family to make sure he's in a positive environment.. and most of all GOOD LUCK TO HIM :)  (+ info)

Do I have testicular cancer or blood clot?

I am only 21 years old. However, I have had 2 surgeries on my testicles in the last two years and it looks like a third one is on the way. My problem started out as a vericocele (was fixed), turned into a right-side hydrocele (was operated on) and now I have an even scarier problem. After draining out all of the fluid following the hydrocele I still have mass in my right testicle. The doctor flashed a light through it and light did not pass. Although he didn't say it, he looked worried. He mentioned the possibility of a blood clot from my hydrocele surgery that hardened, a spermacetti (wtf that is), or scar tissue from the surgery (he doesn't think it is this). I am wondering if it could also be cancer. I'm going for an ultrasound in a few days and I wonder if anyone has any experience with any of this
----------

I have some experience with this. Whatever the first doctor says, tape record it in his presence (with his permission, which he should give). This way you can bring the tape to another doctor for a 2nd opinion, which you will definitely want, no matter what. The tape is much better than your half-remembered layman's version of what the first doctor actually said. And bring all the test results with you to doctor number 2. And you can continue this routine with a 3rd doctor if you want.

If you have testicular cancer, you will want to be treated by a surgeon at a teaching hospital, not a community hospital, because they have way way more surgical experience in their specialty. And that could be the difference between whether you ever have an erection again after surgery, or have sex comfortably.

If they find cancer in one testicle, they may want to take that testicle and the lymph network connected to it. (Each ball has its own lymph network, and you only want them to remove the network for the affected testicle/side. You want to insist on somethig called "nerve sparing" (left or right)-sided lymph node dissection. Nerve sparing means they peel the nerves off the lymph nodes before they chop them off. You want to keep those nerves, because they are important for normal sexual function.

Testicular cancer is more common in young men, your age group, but it is highly treatable and curable if caught early. Whateve happens, you have to go to your follow up visits for the next five years, which men your age seldom do, because they feel invulnerable. Dont be stupid in this way.  (+ info)

What is the most famous hospital for testicular cancer treatment?

I was thinking of getting an opinion about what treatment my husband should follow for testicular cancer. Can you help me with names of hospitals that are considered really good for this form of cancer?
----------

IMO,
#1 Indiana University (Dr Larry Einhorn, the godfather of testicular cancer (treated Lance), also Steve Williams top docs)
#2 Memorial SLoan Kettterig

There are other good places. FYI, Indiana has a hotline to their testicular docs and they will help your local doc by phone- saves lots of money.

Can using a laptop on your lap cause testicular cancer?

I use a laptop for around 4 hours a day (breaks every half an hour or so)
I regularly put it on my lap. I have been reading up on this and apparently some sources say that it can give you testicular cancer or other cancers. Please can someone tell me if this true, and the chances of this happening?

Thanks in advance.
----------

It's possible. I guess that's why they called laptops, notebooks now.  (+ info)
