How do you teach a child with Tay Sachs disease?

Tay sachs disease
----------

I'm guessing you don't have insurance and I'm hoping the child is yours as its going to take alot of time and patience.. Buy yourself a chalk board ,start with little things maybe numbers or do more fun stuff go to the dollar store and get some coloring books she'll have a ball.. Oh get different colored chalk as the white is boring and she'll associate things with colors Like Frog..Green.. Go to toys are us and get the one that you take out the fish, dog ,cat and put it where it belongs ( I can't think of the name of it for the life of me) and have her do it and don't lose your patience this all takes alot of time not something she'll learn overnight make it alot of fun...Also you might want to see if they have anything at you local goodwill & salvation army thats less expensive.. I don't know the amount you can spend. Also think of physical theraphy they are helpfull..you also didn't say how old...
Hoped this helped
Good luck.................  (+ info)

Comparing Tay-Sachs disease and Duchenne's muscular dystrophy?

When comparing Tay-Sachs disease and Duchenne's muscular dystrophy, which of the following do both disorders have in common?

A. They both involve malfunction of the nervous system
B. They both involve mutations in which fat replaces normal tissue
C. They both lead to death in the first few years of life
D. They both are disorders that are equally distributed in the general population.
----------

I believe that it would be A, because C is not right, adults with Tay, can live with it. Only Tay involves fat replacing tissue, so B is out. Tay Sachs has a prevalence of about 1 in 300 and DMD 1-3000 in males, so they don't add up.  (+ info)

Is Tay-Sachs Disease a result of nondisjunction?

I have been looking everywhere for the answer to this question and still cannot find it. If anyone could help me, it would be greatly appreciated! If it is, which chromosomes are affected?
----------

Tay-Sachs is a homozygous recessive disease that typically affects Ashkenasi Jews. It involves the mutation of a gene that codes for a protein involved in lysosomal lipid storage. (Technically it is a "GM2 Gangliosidosis")

Diseases from nondisjunction typically result in either too many or too few chromosomes (think Turners, Kleinfelters, Downs, Patau, or Edwards Syndromes).  (+ info)

Tay Sachs disease is an autosomal recessive trait. ?

Tay Sachs disease is an autosomal recessive trait. Parents who do not have tay sachs produce a child who has tay sachs. What is the genotype of the parent?
please help
----------

has to be Tt for each parent, and by chance (25%) they both give a little t to produce a tt individual, causing the disease.  (+ info)

Why is Tay-Sachs disease common in Ashkenazi Jews?

What makes them more likely to get it than other cultures?
----------

Genetic diseases are passed within that culture....only plenty out breeding out of that culture will change the genetic bloodlines that dominate the disease.
Sickle cell stricks only African Americans. My husband has a disease that only Swedish people get.....it's in the genes.  (+ info)
