If a patient is in supraventricular tachycardia, will they be perfusing?

Of course they will. As the heart rate increases past 150, perfusion levels decrease, however. If the heart rate is significantly higher than 200 BPM, then perfusion levels will drop, however, the greatest threat is hypotension due to inefficient pumping ability of the heart under such fast rates.  (+ info)

Does anybody know if you can smoke weed occasionally if you have paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia?

I'm 16 and have been smoking off and on for about a year and this problem came out of nowhere last week. I never had any heart issues before and I saw a cardiologist who said its not dangerous and is something I was born with which really sucks. I don't need any bullshit weed is bad for you I know and its better than alcohol or tobacco anyway.

Anybody else have SupraVentricular Tachycardia?

I found out about 5 months ago that I have SupraVentricular Tachycardia. (SVT) It's a rhythm heart disorder, that causes fast heartbeat. I was just wondering if anybody has it or knows someone that does, and please state how you found out that you had/have it.

***I take a daily pill that helps cause it, and am having surgery over Summer.
----------

I have it, it's actually very common is teenage girls. I found out because my heart was palpitating one day and it freaked me out. I went to the doctor and had a heart moniter for 24 hours and then an echocardiogram (sp?) but it turns out it was only SVT. My doctor said it is very common and teenagers usually outgrow it. But if I started having symptoms she said to stick my head in ice water and it startles the heart back into normal rhythm.
Hope this helps!  (+ info)

What can Supraventricular Tachycardia lead to?

Well I just recently have been diagnosed with SVT I'm 16 and I was curious to if it could relate to any other heart problems! I don't usually drink coffee, I don't smoke, and don't drink!
Thanks

The rapid beating of the heart during SVT can make the heart a less effective pump so that the cardiac output is decreased and the blood pressure drops. and aldo can lead to other dangerous arrhythmias  (+ info)

Is supraventricular tachycardia always caused by Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome?

I have had a few episodes of SVT and it is now controlled with medication, but after doing some research on my own, I'm wondering if I have this condition.
----------

Supraventricular tachycardia(SVT) is not always caused by Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome(WPW). SVT is any rapid heart rate that origionates frome a site above the ventricles of the heart. These beats usually origionate from the atria at a rate greater than 150 beats per minute. SVT is general term used to describe any rhythm on an EKG that has a narrow QRS complex that is greater than 150 beats per minute. Often you will not be able to tell exactly what the actual heart rhythm is until the heart is slowed down. SVT may actually be atrial fibrilation, atrial flutter or WPW. WPW is a slur in the intitiation of the QRS complex called a delta wave. WPW can only be diagnosed when the heart rate is slow enough to actually be able to see all of the parts of the electrical activity during the cardiac cycle. If you are concerned about whether or not you have this you will need to have an EKG done when you are not in SVT. WPW is treated differently than atrial fibrilation and atrial flutter.  (+ info)

What is paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia?

sally,

It is a sudden, brief acceleration of the top two chambers of the heart. It used to be called "paroxysmal atrial tachycardia," but the name has been changed.

It comes in two basic forms, "focal" and "re-entrant." The focal type means that an extra "circuit" in the electrical connections inside the heart exists. There are a few spots where this happens most commonly, such as at the pulmonary veins. They can cause a burst of electrical "firings" that will speed up the atria. If it is really bothersome, they usually need to be zapped with radio-frequency energy and killed. Then the heart will act normally.

The other one, the "re-entrant" kind, has an extra pathway or two from either of the two nodes in the right atrium, usually the sinus node high in the chamber. The signal started by the sinus node travels a short distance toward teh other node, the AV (atriaoventricular) node, but part of the signal flows into this other pathway and goes back to the sinus node where it triggers another signal for another beat, and so the two atria beat several times as fast as they normally do.

This goes on for a brief time, then quits.

The reason this happens is because the heart electrically is just two chambers. The atria beat together, and the ventricles beat together. The signal starts high in the right atria, in the SA (sinoatrial) node, the "sinus" node, which acts as the heart's pacemaker. The signal then travels down to the AV node, which is the heart's gatekeeper, allowing some signals through, but not others. This is when the atria beat. Then the signal travles through the only path between the atria and the ventricles, the Bundle of His, and then down the Purgenje Fibers down the septum between the ventricles, and then around the apex (the bottom, the point) of the heart, and partway back up the sides ofhte ventricles. This is when they beat.

It doesn't take much electricity to get the job done, just a microvolt or less, but it all starts in the sinus node. If it is disturbed, the beating of the heart will become abnormal. In the case of PSVT, it is usually benign. Most of us experience that, and it causes no problem.

There are conditions, however, that could feel like PSVT that aren't, and so if you are experiencing PSVT regularly, and if it lasts longer than a minute, you might want your doctor to have a look. An ekg tracing that catches it will tell immediately if it is PSVT or atrial flutter, a condition that you would want treated or at least watched for a time by a professional.

Good luck.  (+ info)

Supraventricular tachycardia post ablation symptoms?

I was disgnosed with SVT (supra ventricular tachycardia) when I was 15 years old and soon after had a cardiac ablation to take care of the problem however, the tissue needing to be "lasered" out was too close to my heart node and therefore, they were only able to get some of the tissue. I am now 21 and have been having rapid heart beats like that of the SVT and noticing a lot of fatigue - could they be connected?
----------

Yes, It is more than likely related. You might need to start some meds (beta blocker) to help control it. You really need to see your Cardiologist asap.  (+ info)

Can anyone please explain to me what Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT) is. My 16 year old is being tested?

Why the fvck would someone give you a thumbs down Doc House...

She's been having dizzy spells for years...when she stands up she gets very dizzy...and on occasion her heart races at a very fast rate...up to 300 beats per minute.
It freaks her out and tends to lead her to start panicking which makes things worse *sigh* hopefully it's nothing too serious
oh she also has an innocent murmur
----------

in a basic nut shell it means the heart is beating to fast to let the pumping chamber of the heart to completely fill with blood to make it a good pump. There for it is making her fill terrible. There are medications that can treat this. Yes it would freak anyone out and she has just rights to feel anxious, but anxiety does make it worse. The best thing you can do is help her through it and let her know how important it is to follow directions of medications provided by the doctor. stay away from caffeine or any stimulants for that matter. The electrical stuff is the brain of the system but the reason she is symptomatic with the SVT is, well think of a turkey baster if you don't squeeze it slow and fully it doesn't pump correct does it. now try for one minute to squeeze it all the way 60 times in own minute now try 300 in one minute. how much liquid were you able to displace. Get the idea now. To fast to be useful. In the long run this will also cause the heart muscle to enlarge and make even less of a good pump.

The quick tricks listed above are to invoke a vagal response, have her grunt like she needs to have a poop, same thing,  (+ info)
