Inappropriate Sinus Tachycardia?

My doctor says I may have Inappropriate Sinus Tachycardia.

My blood pressure also elevates when my heart rate increases.

Standing blood pressures are in the systolic 140's and diastolics are in the 80's.

My heart rate can increase from the 70's and 80's with the snap of a finger into the 120's and 130's just by standing up.

The heart rate also increases from 60 beats to 100 beats while lying down and just rolling over from one side to the other.

Occasionally my heart acts like it should and doesn't race from rolling over and it increases moderately as it should when standing like everybody elses and is pretty normal.

By occasionally I mean lie 15 minutes out of a day and about 3 days of a 7 day week.

Any ideas?
My doctor ruled out that it was POTS due to the fact that the tachycardia occurs at times other than just Postural which is key to POTS "Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia".

Thank you
I'm 6'1 195 pnds, don't smoke, don't drink, don't do drugs and exercise three times per week for a total of 6 miles on the treadmill,
Thank you!
I apologize, my question was too vague.

After my tilt table test my doctor's "prognosis" is IST and he prescribed Pindolol.
My concern is that my endothelium has been damaged over the years due to perpetual smokeless tobacco use and the Pindolol would exacerbate such a scenario.
I am looking to explore other avenues aside from the doctors prognosis and my speculation and am seeking additional prognosis's from yahoo answers users.

No not unless your extremely morbidly obese, and just rolling over is a major work out for you. Never really heard of checking a blood pressure change from changing from one lying position to another.  (+ info)

Question! sinus tachycardia and premature ventricular contractions.?

I am 19, and medication is not working for my pvc's and sinus tachycardia, what is another solution?
I have tried atenolol (a beta-blocker) as well as a calcium channel blocker, and so far these have not worked (they almost seem to be making my symptoms worse...my HR dropped as low as 45, causing my dizziness to worsen) I go back to school soon, and would just like a solution...I'm seeing a cardiologist for the first time in a few weeks. (i was diagnosed by a family physician through multiple tests...event monitors, ecg, ekg) and would just like to know what to expect from them as to what they will suggest the solution to my problems to be. Thank you!
Oh and I know that the chances of a cardiologist answering this on yahoo is slim, but I wanted to ask anyways just in case someone out there has my same conditions, or knows someone who does...thanks to all those who answer!

just to clarify, I have gone to a doctor to be diagnosed and prescribed my meds (this obviously wasnt a self diagnostic) Its just that I have not seen a specialist yet( i will be seeing a electro cardiologist in a few weeks...i think thats what its called) BUT I was just hoping to get some prior information as to what to expect the doctors may suggest to be a possible solution for my problems, so I am not shocked when it comes time. :)

For help with specific questions about the heart, one of the best forums is managed by the Cleveland Clinic (one of the best heart centers in the US). MDs there will answer questions -- not about a diagnosis -- but to help you better understand test results and procedures...

http://www.medhelp.org/forums/show/72

Hang out at the forum to help learn about the procedures and network with others.

Secondly, for PVCs I highly recommend going to About.com heart disease forum and posting to Dr. Rich. He specializes in the electrical side of heart conditions (exactly what you're facing), and that forum has many with your condition.

Possible Sinus Tachycardia?

Two nights ago I was driving and felt a fluttering (palpitations) in my chest and I felt very strange. (no chest pains though) so I drove myself to the nearest hospital. There they gave me an EKG, and had my heart monitored for about three hours, as well as taking a urine and blood sample- the blood results all came out negative. They released me from the hospital once my blood pressure dropped (which was a little above normal) and my heart rate went down to normal. It was between 95-140 BPM. -- I was also nervous the entire time so maybe that is why my heart rate fluctuated.

I had a lot of caffeine that morning, two cups of coffee. The night before it was a halloween party where I had some alcohol but of course no drugs of any kind. The doctor had asked me twice if I had taken anything...but I guess they have to rule that out. On my release papers the diagnosis said "sinus tachycardia", and my special instructions were to stay away from coffee, caffeine and chocolate of any kind. Im suprised it didn't say alcohol as well, but I guess they think that stimulants are what's causing this reaction with my heart.

I followed up the next day (yesterday) with the Cardiologist that I saw at the ER, and I received another EKG, and I am scheduled to come back later this week to get a holster heart monitor which I am to wear for 24 hours, then I come back the next day to drop it off, and to take a stress test.

I don't really know what to think since the doctors are really not giving me full detail of my diagnosis, so maybe they don't know yet as well. I'm trying not to worry so I don't stress myself out. I am stressed out frequently at my job and I am a college student, so I suppose my stress level is a little above average of someone who is "normal". So I am unsure if this is something that I am doing to myself (being stressed, and a lot of caffeine) or if it's a medical condition. Can someone maybe give me advice on this situation?

---Also, it's been two days since everything and I have stopped coffee, cigarettes, and chocolate intake. I have not had as much fluttering, or if I am I can't feel it. I noticed if I get excited (stressed or really happy) i feel it. Im just so confused...

Basically tachycardia is your heart beating over 100 beats per minute. take your pulse at your risk to get an idea. look at your watch (you need a third hand) and wait until the seconds hand gets to twelve and then count how many beats until you get to a full rotation of 12 again. The normal heartbeat is 60 -100 bpm. Caffine, cigarettes and other stimulants (including stressful situations) can and do cause tachycardia. You'll find out more during your next visit. Make sure your drinking water instead of soda too.   (+ info)

Inappropriate Sinus Tachycardia symptoms?

Within the past two months I have started to get strange symptoms; the feeling I am about to faint, chest pain which gets worse when I consume caffeine, a slight feeling of laziness which is strange considering I am used to running 3 miles each day, and sometimes some sweating, particularly seen when it was raining one time. My friend told me that there is a possibility it could be a heart disease, I have read about Inappropriate Sinus Tachycardia in the past and the symptoms seem to match, however, I want a second opinion other than my own so I'm checking on here. If you're a specialist could you tell me about the diagnosis process and treatment, although I know there is no proper treatment just medication to relieve some of the symptoms. I am a 17 year old male, which is a minority since the condition usually only affects females in their late 20's to 30's.

p.s. Please don't tell me to see a Doctor since I've already made an appointment for Friday.
I also feel faint when I suddenly stand up which signifies a drop in blood pressure.

what causes sinus tachycardia?

hello everyone about 2 weeks ago i was laying on my couch trying to take a nap when all of a sudden i got a nervous feeling in my stomach i sat up and immediately felt like i had to go to the bathroom i winded up having severe diarrhea right after the diarrhea came out of me, my heart started pounding really fast at first i thought maybe it was a panic attack so i sat down for about an hour but the rapid heartrate continued also i had really bad cramping in my left arm with some mild pain i finally called an ambulance and they came into my house and hooked me up to a heart monitor and it showed a heart rate of 155 sinus tachycardia i went to the hospital and for 2 more hours my heart continued to race finally they gave me an injection of beta-blockers and it slowed my heart down they ran all the blood work and could not figure out what had caused this. the emergency room doctor suggested anxiety but i thought that was rather silly of him seeing that my heart was racing for 3 hours. who would have an anxiety attack for 3 hours and i know that i was not having an anxiety attack. anyone know some possible causes of this

Sinus Tachycardia Depressions-PLEASE REPLY?

I was recently taken to the emergency room with tightness in my chest, tachycardia, palpatations, dizzy and sweaty palms. I was kept over night and admitted in the cardiac unit ONLY to wait and see if I had a possible heart attack. I had 3 EKG's. 2 were prior to taking the nitroglicern tablet in the hospital and were positive which showed mild depression. The 3rd one was negative (this was after 3 nitro-pills and morphine). I was sent home because I didnt have a "heart attack" BUT they have me doing a holter test and stress echo in a few days. Can you have a positive EKG and be fine...... I am not sure what to make out of all of this. I am a healthy 26 year old mother of 2. Any info would be great!
Also cardiac disease is VERY high in my family. There is a strong genetic dispotion of 50% of family members having mitro-valve prolapse
...... and I am an ex-smoker (9 years of smoking)

You can have very abnormal ECG's and still have a normal heart. Last week I admitted a female in her 70's with a "high risk" ECG and vague complaints. She had a cardiac catheterization and an echocardiogram both of which were essentially normal (age appropriate). If the two initial ECG's occurred when your heart rate was going very fast then the abnormalities may be rate related. It is not uncommon in tachycardia to see ST depressions. It is hard to tell initially if they are rate related or due to ischemia (area of the heart not getting enough oxygen).

The stress echo will be the deciding test to determine if you have any ischemic areas in your heart (increased risk for heart attack). The holter will help determine the presence of arrythmia (not related to ischemia).

You are a very low risk for having had a heart attack or for having ischemic heart disease. Your risk for having ischemic heart disease is likely in the 10% range  (+ info)

Do I have sinus tachycardia?

you may very well have sinus tach, but the palpitations you felt in your chest are usually due to atrial flutter and possibly atrial fibrillation, not sinus tach. i think this is the reason the cardiologist wants you to wear a 24 hr monitor, to record your ecgs over long periods and see if they can catch these irregular beats. this a-flutter (which is most likely what it is) is probably due to an ectopic pacemaker in your heart, which if it becomes troublesome will need to be ablated. a relatively simply procedure my girlfriend had done when she was younger.
one major complication from atrial flutter is clot formation in the atria of your heart because the fluttering causes ineffectual blood flow (stasis) which can lead to clot formation. your cardiologist is well aware of all this so have faith in him or her to get down to the bottom of this.

you'll be fine, but it would be a good idea to stay away from the nicotine, caffeine, sudafed (pseudophedrine) any kind of stimulant until you get this cleared up.

it could also be other things like WPW, etc. but those are less likely.

does anyone know reason for sinus tachycardia and headaches?

doctors unsure but waiting for test results from 24 urine collection.

MANY things! Hypoxemia(low oxygen in the blood), Hypovolemia(low level of blood in the body), Severe anemia(low hemoglobin in the blood), Hyperthermia(high body temperature), Massive hemorrhage, Hyperthyroidism(over active thyroid), Congestive heart failure, Cardiogenic shock, Myocardial ischemia(decreased blood supply to the heart), Heart valve disorders, Pulmonary embolism(blood clot in the pulmonary artery), Hypertension(high blood pressure), Infarction(death of tissue due to blood deprivation caused by an embolus or blood clot). Also caused by fear, exercise, fever, pain, anger and anxiety.  (+ info)

i had gone through an episode of sinus tachycardia, bad or not serious?

I was at school, felt fine, then I began to get dizzy with 5 seconds of shortened breathe and my heart began to race (120bpm) and I went to clinic, and the ambulance came to get me.. in the hospitalmy heart would go to normal bpm and rise to 120bpm and back down to 70 (range:70bpm-125bpm) and the doctors told me I had sinus tachycardia. They also said my EKG is fine besides the fact my heart is speeding up for a minute then slowing down.. when my rythm stayed the same at 75bpm and sustained it, they basically released me and a cardiologist at the hospital said I have nothing much to worry about... but if I do to call him.. does that seem right? What's wrong with me, why is it doing this and how can it be corrected?
ADDITIONAL IMPORTANT INFORMATION!
I'm 17 about to turn 18 next month,
I had SVT (supraventricular tachycardia) but was fixed with radiofrequency ablation the 9th of last month and had a check up like 2 weeks ago and everythings fine..
I had no chest pains at all except for maybe a little disconfort..
I'm a male at 130pounds
Help?

My guess would be that your are have more than one aberrant pathway and need to see you electrophysiologist again soon. Most Dr.s aren't that expert at seeing aberrant conduction on a surface EKG and they can be tricky. so, as you have already had one pathway blocked, it is likely that you have another or the first one didn't take all that well and has breakthrough conduction that gets the system going too fast.  (+ info)

Could the diagnosis of Inappropriate Sinus Tachycardia be wrong?

I've only just been diagnosed, so I've been on a bit of an internet binge. Some of the info I've found makes me wonder whether I've really got IST.

I'd like your opinion on whether I have IST, or whether it could be something else (eg to do with my orthostatic hypotension).

*Recently noticed that my heart rate was much higher than it should be
*no palpitations unless I exercise a lot (I can only really tell that my heart is beating fast if I measure it)
*20yr old female
*history of mild orthostatic hypotension for as long as I can remember (occasional short dizzy spells when standing up quickly)
*Recently this has got worse (longer dizzy spells that sometimes don't go away completely for hours) and is set off by smaller things (eg unloading the dishwasher).
*Also dizzy spells when I'm standing up for long periods of time and at other random times.
*Dizzy spells seem to miraculously be cured by electrolyte drinks (eg gatoraide or gastrolyte)
*Useless at exercise; I get out of breath quickly.
*No drugs, alcohol, caffeine, smoking etc
*Blood test - normal (no thyroid issues and not dehydrated, electrolytes were normal)
*echo- normal
*blood pressure was 110/85 when heart rate 115
*holter monitor - lots of sinus tachycardia (a few hundred separate episodes). Min heart rate 50, max 190 (climbing 5 flights of stairs), average 105. One thing I found interesting was that the heart rate was below 100 for all hours I was asleep and for the first hour after I woke up (the neighbours were being noisy at 5am, but I stayed in bed reading until 6. during that hour my heart rate was the same as if i'd been sleeping).

what does it sound like to you?
thanks!
----------

Your symptoms are similar to those of IST, but could also be related to a condition called Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS). Since you mention that you have orthostatic hypotention, this is definitely something to consider.

In most people with IST, the average heart rate is 95 bpm, including sleep. Because your heart rate gets into the 50's at night, I'm not sure that IST is the answer.

Good luck!  (+ info)
