What percentage of Australia's population have latent TB?

I read that about 2 billion people have latent TB globally, are there any statistics on Australia?
----------

We know that australia has one of the lowest rates of TB in the world and we know that that is probably accurate since its a developed country. meaning that any real cases of TB are likely to be reported. that would strongly suggest that the rates of latent TB are low also.

There are not going to be very accurate statistics, because latent TB isn't something that is reported on and therefore there is no tracking of the rates.   (+ info)

is it normal to test for syphilis at a prenatal visit?

Dude! Syphilis!? Who gets that anymore? The last guy to die of that was like the dad of Robert the Bruce on Braveheart, right? I realize it can cause serious birth defects but I was under the impression it had gone the way of smallpox and polio...is syphilis making a resurgence or what?
----------

No syphilis is still common.
There was actually and outbreak of syphilis at a school in a district near where I live.

And its normal for them to check for any major std that can cause serious harm to the baby when it is born. Plus syphilis can make a person go crazy, it rots your brain basically.. so I would assume they would want to make sure you didnt have it. lol  (+ info)

The chances of a toddler contracting syphilis?

What are the chances, if any, of a toddler contracting syphilis from someone that is infected w/out having any form of sex? Could it be transmitted through spit, or ?? If someone shows no signs of the syphilis, as far as sores & such.
----------

A toddler should never have syphilis. It can be passed to an unborn child, but if the child was born with syphilis, the hospital should have noticed and treated it.

If a toddler is infected with syphilis, CPS needs to be called, because sexual abuse seems like the only possible cause.  (+ info)

Can syphilis be spread through infected semen?

IF a person comes into contact with another person's semen, and that other person has syphilis, can the uninfected person cntract syphilis?
----------

YES YES YES
Everything i've read says that syphilis is TYPICALLY contracted through direct contact with a sore/lesion (chancre). I only found one source that explicitly said it could be contracted through semen and fluids (see here: Toronto Public Health -- http://www.toronto.ca/health/syphilis_index.htm) which makes sense, because its the bacteria that carries syphilis, and i would assume that if that bacteria came into contact with semen, the semen (or other bodilyfluid) would be carrying some of the infectious bacteria. People who are in the first two years of having syphilis are HIGHLY contagious. (if the semen touches a sore - could be an internal sore that you can't see- then it is carrying the bacteria, and thus the semen itself is infectious)
The bright side of Syphilis (if there is one) is that it IS one of the few curable STD's. Just a shot of penicillin (or other antibiotic) tends to take care of it. Untreated Syphilis can cause serious damage to your internal organs (including your heart), your eyes, and bones. Even at late stages, it is curable, but damage done to tother parts of you is irreversible.
I hope you are not asking this question based on a personal experience, and are just curious... However, if you do suspect that you may be infected SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY. The cure time is much shorter the sooner you go. (i'm posting this in the DB too)

BTW - i found the Toronto Public Health Site to be the most informative.  (+ info)

Can a woman who had syphilis 7 years ago pass it on to her newborn but not her mate after being treated?

She said that she was treated and cured. It did not show up at OBGYN before but did after delivery. Was it possible that she acquired syphilis again during pregnancy or was it from the past?
----------

Typically the bacteria that cause syphillis are exquisitely sensitive to penicillin. Normally it doesn't show up again unless it wasn't treated and even then one would show very distinct symptoms that would make a recurrence obvious. It is easier to give the syphillis to the child in utero since the bacteria are present in the blood and in the vagina both of which the unborn child has contact with. I've attached an article if you'd like to know more.

I hope this helps.  (+ info)

----------

Start by telling him you are sorry for spreading venomous rumors and lies here about him.  (+ info)

WIs it true that it is very hard and rare for a man to get syphilis from a woman?

If a woman is infected with syphilis, a man can easily contract it by having unprotected sex, or a condom breaking right. I ask because someone said that if a man contracted syphilis, he more than likely got it from another man and not a woman. Is this true?
----------

No that is not true. You can get most std's from a man or a woman, it's who you have sex with that matters the most, not what sex they are.   (+ info)

What is the average life expectancy of a person living with LTBI (Latent Tuberculosis Infection)?

What is the average life expectancy of someone who has had latent tuberculosis infection since they were two years old and as a result has had active tuberculosis disease?

What is the life expectancy if the person with LTBI doesn't take their medicine after having an active TB disease?
----------

That's a very hard question to answer! People with Tuberculosis get REALLY sick anywhere between weeks and years later - but most eventually do, and can die of it. One problem is if a person gets another disease, the combo is really deadly. Another problem is the TYPE of TB, some strains of the bacteria are resistant to almost all the drugs we have, so it is better to wait a little bit if it means you will take ALL your Meds ALL the time!
At the beginning of the 1900s, TB was pretty common in the US, and alot of people died. Then the government put alot of money into Public Health and it became rare here, but was growing everywhere else in the world. Then Pres Ronald Reagan really hurt the Public Health System, so now it has been increasing in the US ever since.
Generally with most infectious diseases, the longer you wait, the longer and harder the treatment will be, and less likely to work. Also, especially with TB, the longer you wait, the more you can give it to others!!! Good Luck!  (+ info)
