What kind of wound infection did I have?

I punctured my foot, and a few days later, a solid red line (it was really a line, not diffuse redness) went from the wound, across the bottom of my foot, and up my leg. It got to my ankle by the time I was treated. But I was a young child, and I do not know what I had. Any ideas?
----------

That was a bacterial infection. When they spread, there are usually several lines that run up the limb. Sorry, no way to guess the specific bacteria.

Another clue is that it was apparently treated completely and fairly easily - or you would have written more about it. That's typical of a bacterial infection treated with a modern antibiotic. So easy it seems simple. A hundred years ago the infection would have spread up your leg, landing you in bed, in pain, for weeks - possibly costing you your leg or your life.  (+ info)

what does a potato have that it will draw infection out of open wound?

i have had a bite and my grandma has an open wound on her leg and we put a potato on it at night before bed and it has drawn the infection out of the wound and made it alot better. i also had a bite of somekind and we put the potato on it and it pulled all the venom out and i didn't have to go to doctor. just was wondering if it is the acid or startch in the slice of potato that makes it draw the infection out. several other friends have tried it and it really does work. just slice a small portion off of potato, wash it and apply to area with tape or we use saran wrap to hold the potato slice on. thanks

the starch it draws out the infection or the poison i have never tried this but i hear it works.  (+ info)

Can a mechanical pencil stab wound cause infection?

A friend was goofing around and the graphite punctured like a 1/4 inch. there was some blood, but nothing major and it clotted well. Is there a bad chance of infection. Won't my body's immune system take care of any bacteria?
And, i covered it with some clean napkin until it stopped bleeding until it clotted, will that help prevent infection?
----------

Yes, you can get pretty much ANY wound infected, no matter how you got it or what it was made by.

Yes, the immune system generally does prevent infection. You can boost it by taking extra vitamins, keeping the wound clean and covered, and using an antibacterial ointment under the band-aid.  (+ info)

A infection in my leg was positive for MRSA.I had no wound on my leg when my infection began. How did I get it?

I am a Retail employee at a Goodwill store and donation center.I was working in the donation area the day before the infection started.Any Idea that may be the cause?
----------

MRSA infections are grouped into two types:

Healthcare-associated MRSA (HA-MRSA) infections occur in people who are or have recently been in the hospital. Those who have been hospitalized or had surgery within the past year are at an increased risk. MRSA bacteria are responsible for a large percentage of hospital-acquired staph infections.

Community-associated MRSA (CA-MRSA) infections are ones that occur in otherwise healthy people who have not recently been in the hospital. The infections have occurred among athletes who share equipment or personal items (such as towels or razors) and children in daycare facilities. Members of the military and those who receive tattoos are also at risk. The number of CA-MRSA cases is increasing.
Bottom line is you could have picked it up anywhere. you were just unlucky.  (+ info)

Best wound care for a surgical incision?

What do I put on a 20cm surgical incision located on my lower abdomen to heal the wound and leave a barely-there scar?

This is a cosmetic procedure.

Thanks.
----------

Consult your surgeon!
There are several good treatments for scars now - I know Mederma is a good one. Also, check with the pharmacist - they usually have good suggestions.
Do not get the incision tan for at least one year- it will be darker than the rest of your abdomen forever.  (+ info)

Is HIV infection possible from coming in contact with an infected persons wound, even if there is no blood?

Suppose an HIV infected person has a cut or sore of some kind that is not all healed up, but is no longer bleeding. Could someone else get infected if they had a wound that touched the + person? Or is actual blood flow required to pass the virus?
----------

i am in school to be a dental assistant and i have to take a class for infection control and safety. from what i know, it doesn't take a whole lot of blood to spread the infection. it can live for 7 days in a little tiny drop. so its a good idea to check and make sure. if you have a scab...its got your infected blood cells. therefore...any contact could lead to infection.  (+ info)

How do I get rid of infection in a wound?

I got a really bad blister a couple of weeks ago on my heel and it's been infected for a week or so. I've been cleaning the would regularly by soaking it in warm, salted water and then putting hydrogen peroxide on it. Then, I've been putting Bacterium ointment on it and putting a bandaid on it. But it's still infected. I know I could go to the doctor and get antibiotics, but that type of medication wreaks havoc on my system and I don't want to go that route. Any other suggestions?
----------

Take the antibiotics along with acidophilus (?sp). It will help mitigate the negative effects so that they may not even be noticible, but you will still get the benefits of the antibiotic.  (+ info)

How can I minimise the risk of post-surgical infection?

Going in on Tuesday to have a small lump removed from my breast. What measures can I take at home to help ensure the site doesn't become infected?
----------

Keep it dry and clean but don't look to often at it, by removing the bandage, just to see how it's doing.
Then ask how often you will have to come into hospital to have the dressing changed.
It's not often infections are caught at home as there is nobody else there carrying infection.
Above all ask for advice. That's what the nurses are there for to help you.
There may be a nurse who specialises in that sort of thing an aftercare nurse.
Above all don't worry too much and good luck.
Remember it's about you so ask when in doubt.  (+ info)

Which leaves less risk of infection, surgical grade steel or gold earrings?

Just got my ears pierced, and I'm wondering whether or not I made the right choice.. honestly I know it's not too big of a deal, but I picked 14 kt gold. Which one carries less risk of infection, the gold or surgical grade steel?
----------

Go with gold! Gold is nonreactive and will absolutely not cause an infection any more than the surgical steel. Very few people have any king of reaction to gold- it is attractive and very safe for piercing. Surgical steel is no more safe than gold- neither are reactive metals. Any infection will come from an outside source (like you touching your new piercing with dirty hands) Just keep the area clean with surgical spirit regularly and you'll be fine.  (+ info)
