Can a skinny person get adult-onset diabetes?

...in other words is it always associated with weight, or can a person who is skinny but still eats a bad diet get type II?
Also, what if the person is skinny not because of metabolism, but because they don't eat very much? Is insulin level affected by this?
----------

Amy has it down fairly well. Yes, occasionally thin people become diabetic. Key word: diet. Type two is caused by having a genetic predisposition then aggravating that with poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, and being overweight. Any combination of those three triggers with the predisposition can net you a case of diabetes. I was not particularly overweight nor particularly sedentary. I was eating a poor diet (compared to nowadays) which is probably what put me over the top.

Science has uncovered some interesting facts concerning diet and type two diabetes. I have posted quite a few interesting things about it on my diabetes info page. You might want to check it out: http://www.geocities.com/seabulls69/Type_II_Diabetes.html  (+ info)

What do hormonal imbalances have to do with the onset of metabolic bone disease?

In humans!!
----------

The level of calcium in the blood is regulated by two hormones PTH (Parathyroid Hormone) from the parathyroid gland and Calcitonin which is produced by the thyroid gland.

If this regulatory mechanism is disrupted then metabolic bone disease can occur.

The picture is complicated in that bone resorption and formation is also influenced by other hormones, such as oestrogen, GH (Growth Hormone) and glucocorticoids.  (+ info)

What does getting old have to do with the onset of disease and the eventual deaths of the elderly?

This is a very complicated, but seemingly easy, question. In fact, the total answers are not in yet, but the internal workings of the cells are becoming more and more known. There are numerous chemical changes which occur within a cell after so many cellular divisions, which leads to "apoptosis". This is a fancy word which basically means "programmed cell death". So, in effect, the body is programmed to shut down after so many cellular divisions (meaning older age). In addition, people tend to abuse their bodies, but eating poorly and being lazy without exercising, so that often, they will die even before their genetically programmed death time. I realize that I haven't given you a total answer, but at least it's a starting point for you to understand what happens with the aging of a living organism.  (+ info)

Is there a disease besides ADD, AADD, adult ADHD, where an adult acts like a child?

My friend that is 22, acts like a child, he just got a license. He sits on his legs like kids do at booths or tables to see over it, and he buys more than one thing at the store just because he has the money. The main point is that he acts like a child, I know he has some disease but i don't want to ask him because its kind of rude. It may not be a disease, but I know he has something wrong with him. Can anyone answer?
----------

He probably has a mental disorder (i'm not being rude) I have a friend who's about 20 and acts the same way. Real friendly guy but acts childlike.  (+ info)

Does anyone know any slim people with type 2 adult onset diabetes? And if so, are they vegetarians?

Just curious whether this type of diabetes affects slim people as well as obese.
Thanks for all the good answers. I am not diabetic, but very curious.
----------

just goes to show you that another misconception of being overweight is having diabetes. sure, you might have a significant higher risk of having it, but it doesn't always go with the territory. another myth blown out of the water.  (+ info)

Have you had a childhood disease as an adult ?
