Is adult onset of diabetes reversible?

I don't have it but am wondering if it goes away if someone eats less sugar.
----------

Diabetes is not always caused by diet, just like cancer is not always caused by smoking. So the answer to your question depends on the type of diabetes you happen to have. Most people that are diagnosed can manage the condition with proper medication and diet and exercise. However someone with insulin dependent diabetes (their body is not producing insulin) cannot reverse the condition.  (+ info)

How long do persons with Alzheimers disease live after onset of the disease?

It depends.
My mom has Alzheimer's - diagnosed more than 2 yrs ago - she is 87 and otherwise healthy as a bear. As Alzheimer's is basically an 'attack on the brain' one can live a good while with lowered brain function. Reagan lived what - 10 yrs?

I love the analogy given in one of the many books I read upon diagnosis.
Picture a healthy tree with all its branches and leaves.
Then picture the same tree with the leaves gone (Stage 1). Then picture it with the branches gone (Stage 2),
Then with the branches gone (Stage 3),
Then with the trunk shriveled and bent (Stage 4).

My mom is in stage 3. We keep her at home and it is very hard but she is our Mom. Lately she is losing her appetite.

Good luck to you. Lots of info and support groups on the web but the site below is very easy to follow. Good luck.  (+ info)

Has anyone ever gotton adult onset asthma? Is it temporary or permanent health situation?

Adult onset asthma should always be considered an ongoing, lifelong situation, it does not improve and it does not go away. Even for children with asthma that find it improves in their teens and twenties still "have" asthma and should consider it still lurking there waiting to haunt them one day.  (+ info)

What is the life expectancy for an adult with untreated congenital heart disease?

It is highly variable as congenital heart disease is wide spectrum. There are very mild forms like bicuspid aortic valve without obstruction or leak which has a near normal life span. Same is true of small atrial septal defects, small ventricular septal defects and small patent ductus arteriosus. On the other end of the spectrum there are complex congenital heart diseases with survival limited to hours or days. Most of the adults with untreated congenital heart disease have relatively milder forms, just by the fact that they have survived into adulthood. But an ocassional person may have a severe form. It is not prudent just to judge by the common label of "untreated congenital heart disease". Survival depends on the specific disorder, which has to evaluated in depth by the physician and commented upon.  (+ info)

Adult onset muscular dystrophy or ALS?

Is adult onset muscular dystrophy the same as ALS? I have a friend who recently told me that she has the gene for MD. Her brother has the gene and has contracted it. She's from Germany and doesn't know the English word for what he has (slow paralysis. Seems like ALS to me). Does anyone know? It's a gene, her sister has the gene and it could be passed to her children BUT she does not have the disease. I guess there is a blood test that can be taken to determine whether the disease will manifest itself or whether you're just a carrier.

Thanks in advance. This has been a difficult thing to hear about her.
----------

There may be other adult onset forms of Muscular Dystrophy, but ALS, or Lou Gehrig's Disease, is the one that gets the most attention. Click on the link below if you would like more information.  (+ info)
