Is there a natural way of treating Steven-johnson syndrome for someone in a rural African village?

Steven-Johnson syndrome is most commonly a drug reaction - the best cure is to stop the drug causing it. In severe cases this can be a fatal condition.

Best advice is to treat it symptomatically.  (+ info)

How can we cure steven johnson syndrome?

Treatment of Stevens-Johnson involves stopping any recently started drugs, treating any underlying infections, and tending to the affected areas of the body.

Areas of skin where blisters have ruptured leave open sores on the skin, which can become infected. Persons with large areas of skin involvement are usually admitted to the hospital for treatment of the skin with cleaning, topical antibiotics, and dressings.

Observation for worsening symptoms, intravenous fluids and systemic antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medications may also be required. Itching can also be treated with medications to relieve this annoying symptom.

Most cases resolve on their own whether or not a cause is found. Skin biopsies may be required to make a diagnosis in difficult or atypical cases. In rare instances, death can occur from a severe case due to widespread skin involvement and infection.  (+ info)

I need information about toxic epidermal necrolosys/steven johnson syndrome, and erythema multiforme.?

I have a friend who has been dignosed with;fibromyalga, chronic pain syndrome,DJD,osteoarthritis, angular chelitis, metabolic syndrome, depression, anxiety, and numerous other diagnosis. Is there any one out there who knows about "toxic epidermal necrolosys/steven johnson syndrome/erythema multiforme"?? If so is associated with any of these other diagnosis'?
----------

Toxic epidermal necrolysis is a life-threatening skin disorder characterized by a blistering and peeling of the top layer of skin. This disorder can be caused by a drug reaction -- most often penicillin -- or another disease. About one-third of all diagnosed cases of toxic epidermal necrolysis are a result of unknown causes.

Toxic epidermal necrolysis can cause the skin to peel off in sheets, leaving large areas that look scalded. The loss of skin causes fluids and salts to ooze from the raw, damaged areas which can easily become infected. The following are the most common symptoms of toxic epidermal necrolysis. However, each person may experience symptoms differently:

a painful, red area that spreads quickly
the top layer of skin may peel without blistering
scalded-looking raw areas of flesh
discomfort
fever
condition spread to eyes, mouth, and genitals
The symptoms of toxic epidermal necrolysis may resemble other dermatologic conditions. Consult a physician for diagnosis.

The progression of the disease happens fast, usually within three days. Treatment usually includes hospitalization, often in the burn unit. If a medication is causing the skin reaction, the patient is immediately taken off the medication. Specific treatment for toxic epidermal necrolysis will be determined by your physician based on:

your overall health, age, and medical history
severity of the condition
your tolerance of specific medications, procedures, or therapies
your opinion or preference
Treatment may include one, or several, of the following:

isolation to prevent infection
protective bandages
intravenous fluid and electrolytes
antibiotics  (+ info)

what is the recovery rate for steven johnson"s syndrome and is the scarring permanent?

Viv n,
The recovery rate in the absence of complications is high, 90 to 95%, but the recovery time may be quite prolonged. Any judgment of prognosis, in an individual case, is best made by the doctor(s) most intimately involved in the care of the patient.
Specific nursing care and adequate topical management reduce associated morbidity and allow a more rapid re-epithelialization of skin lesions. After healing, follow-up is needed for ophthalmologic and mucous membrane sequelae. Sunblocks are recommended. Testing for glycemia must be done. Avoidance of the responsible drug and chemically related compounds is essential for the patient and first-degree relatives.

Does Stevens-Johnson and TEN have to be from medication?

My father is in the hospital in critical condition and they have no idea what is wrong. Every doctor is perplexed and says that it is just like Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, but he hasnt had ANY medication in over a year. Can ANYTHING else cause either of these conditions, or is there any other disease that has the same exact symptoms to the above two? (Symptoms being a cough or slight fever, then a rash beginning in the genital area and spreading before the skin begins to blister and peel off, much like a burn).
He never takes anything, he doesnt even drink herbal tea! This rash started very slowly and he is so tough that he waited until it was covering about 80% of his body to call a dermatologist. Now he is miserable and they are giving him morphine to make him comfortable, but he couldnt even hold his arm up to touch his granddaughter, the light of his life.
----------

Oh my goodness he must be feeling truly aweful.

Its my understanding that this shocking condition is caused by medication, that the person has recently started to take.

Are you absolutely sure he has not started any medication recently? Even something like a herbal medication could cause it.

Having had experience with this very scary condition, and all I had was one tablet, with in half an hour I was not well, my hands feet, knees, lips etc had swollen and gone cherry red, my heart was pounding, and I felt sick & dizzy, as well as feeling like the flu coming, migraine type headache, eventually passing out after vomiting (stage 1). luckily for me I know what the drug was, and must wear a Medic Alert bracelet.

I honestly hope he pulls through, and they can find out what the triggering factor is, if they do ensure that he wears a Medic Alert medallion.  (+ info)

I'm on prednisone for tennis elbow, have Stevens Johnson, did meds cause my feet to burn and itch?

I was diagnosed in 2008 with Stevens Johnson Syndrome and have to be careful with the medications I take. I am currently taking prednisone for tennis elbow. I took my dose last nigh before bedtime which was two pills. After about an hour my feet were on "fire" and itchy. It was very painful and lasted about an hour. I'm wondering if it could be my SJS.
I am on the kind of seroid dose pack that is a diminishing, and has to be taken as directed all throughout the day.

Steven Johnson syndrome?

A friend of mine has been diagnosed with Steven Johnson syndrome, what exactly is it?, and what is the long term prognosis?.

Is it contagious?. There is quite a lot about it online, but I don't find it easy to understand.
Or is it stephen johnson syndrome?.
Thank you all for sharing your knowledge.
----------

"Stevens - Johnson syndrome"

severe allergic reaction - usually in response to medications
can also result from herpes infection.

get blistering of skin all over, including eyes, mouth, vagina, rectum.

there is no real treatment other than to withdraw the drug that caused it, if there is one. Nowadays, deaths are very very rare - because the most serious cases are (or SHOULD be) transferred to a burn center where they are most experienced caring for these types of wounds.

He's likely to get better, but will get better on his own - the doctors' job is to try to prevent infection, and support him until he can heal.

it is not contagious.  (+ info)
