what is Stevens Johnson syndrome?

Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) is a severe and life-threatening condition. It is thought to be a hypersensitivity complex affecting the skin and the mucous membranes.

There is agreement in the medical literature that Stevens-Johnson syndrome can be considered milder form of toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN). However, there is debate whether it falls on a spectrum of disease that includes erythema multiforme; many consider erythema multiforme (EM) to be unrelated to SJS and TEN.

Some classify SJS as a severe expression of erythema multiforme, and it occasionally referred to as erythema multiforme major

what is Stevens-Johnson's Syndrome?

Ive heard it is like red dot that are sometimes raised but can it also be anything else other than this?
----------

Stevens-Johnson's is much more than a little red dot.

It's a severe, but rare reaction to something.. usually unknown. On the off chance that they do figure out a cause, it is usually related to a medication that was given.

During the course of this disease, the top layer of skin begins to separate from the lower layer. It dies and peels off. Since the disease also affects your mucous membranes, ulcers begin to form in the mouth and nose, making it very hard to eat. Often, the patients have to be fed through an IV, or a through their nose.

A more serious form, called TENS, results in more skin detatching.

It's treated the same way you would a large burn, with fluids and pain medications. Usually, all of the meds a patient was on before the incident are stopped, in case they caused the problem.  (+ info)

Do not quit your career. It sounds like you may also have allergies as well as the dry eye. That usually gives a ropy discharge, worse in the a.m. To treat dry eye appropriately, you need to treat the inflammatory component to the dry eye first, and then the other symptoms. I usually pet my patient on a round of steroids (topical) for a week to 10 days, then I will stop that and put them on an allergy drop to use daily to keep the irritation and reddness down as well as the discharge. Then, I will use artificial tears with that regiman or if it is severe, like with your case, then I will percribe restasis. This drug stimulates the lacrimal gland to produce tears of your own. In rare cases, I will finally also plug the tear ducts to slow down the rate the tears drain, thus giving you more exposure to your tears. Good luck. For starters, add a gel artifical tear at bedtime, and drops during the day, like optive. Then see a Dr.  (+ info)

Any one else have or there children have Steven Johnson Syndrome?

I had it as a baby, and nearly died. Its a auto immune disorder, that for a short while your antibodies go haywire and forget to attack invading germs, also it makes you allergic to almost anything.

I was in a protective enviroment for 5 months, lost almost all my skin, had boils, and diarreah, and everything else associated with it. I had a very bad case of it and got over it with hardly any allergies. I was told, after getting pregnant, it was not heriditary. I asked about it, well they said exactly. Its not "KNOWN" to be. Any way after my daughter was born about 6 weeks later she got so sick. Test after test after test and they finally said it was Steven Johnson Syndrome. She was sick a long time. My mom said longer than me. So it IS heriditary? or did she just have a propencity for it since I had it previous? I thought syndromes were passable to your offspring?
----------

theres not enough information on it just yet to know if it can be heriditary.. my homegirls son has it.. and he is struggling for his life right now.
They are still trying to figure out the cause of it and trying to come up with a procedure or vaccination to prevent against this.  (+ info)

What does the very beginning of a Stevens Johnson Syndrome rash look like?

When I look on the internet, I can only find the non-skin symptoms (ex. fever, flu-like feeling, aches) and pictures of severe, progressed SJS. What does the rash (on the skin, not inside the mouth) look like at the ~very beginning~?

I was severely sunburnt eight days ago (I have albinism) and was given ketorolac, Zofran, and fluids for rehydration by IV in the hospital, and sent home with a six-day course of methylprednisolone and more Zofran. My sunburn has healed (save for a little flaky peeling) everywhere but the backs of my thighs and knees. I have purplish red dots on my skin and peeling (in large thin sheets, worse than everywhere else with same exposure.) I had a follow-up appointment this morning, and my first doctor consulted two more doctors before determining that I ~probably~ didn't have SJS. I've since gotten another painful red sore that is peeling. It doesn't look like a regular sunburn.

I have been taking Lamictal for approximately six months without any problems, but after the doctor brought it up (before dismissing it) I read on the Mayo Clinic's website that SJS could be caused by radiation or UV light as well. I feel like I'm being a little paranoid, but after seeing pictures of people with SJS, I really would like to make sure I don't have it.

The rash is erythema multiforme...here's a link from google images

I have a dry eyes due to stevens johnson syndrome(drug-Allergic).Will this dry ness leads to blindness?

No it will not. You have to remove or stop taking the offending agent. Follow your doctors advise on what medications to take and the dry eyes will resolve along with other manifestations of SJS. If you have dry eyes, consider asking your doctor to prescribe you with Tears Naturale...  (+ info)

Has anyone experienced Stevens-Johnsons Syndrome or know someone who has?

My friend alert but on a ventilator because of the severity of the progression.Asking if full recovery possible.
Thank you.
----------

Yes, a full recovery is possible. The main danger in Steven-Johnson syndrome is severe infections from losing a lot of your skin. This disease can be fatal, but if only a small area of skin is involved, survival is very likely. If a large area of the body is involved, it becomes more life-threatening.  (+ info)

could stevens johnsons syndrome as a baby cause lifelong depression?

had sjs reaction to medication as a young child and was treated in the burns unit could this have contributed to dpression suffered over 30 years off and on
thank you istill remember the screams as my mum picked me up i remember being picked up in sheets. alll four corners.and i remember having to eat icecream i wa only 18 months old how can i possibly remember this!
----------

That's a very interesting question. According to Maslows Hierarchy of needs, the first stage of growth and development is "trust vs mistrust", will my parents be there to meet all my needs, and they were not(not because they didn't want to be there) and you were surrounded by strangers who only met your physical needs, not your emotional needs. You might of felt confused and abandoned. I've also taken care of an adult female who developed SJS. It would literally take hours just to do her dressings, and it was very painfull. She was in our unit for 6 weeks. I can't imagine a baby going through that I hope this helps. How could you remember this. ?you were obviously traumatized by the entire event. You obviously do not have a repressed memory, you are recalling the actual events.  (+ info)
