Spondylolisthesis?

I have spondylolisthesis L1,L2 I've been in therapy and it has help me with the pain. I don't need surgery for now. But i would like to know what things I should avoid or do so I wont worsen my condition. Sometimes I have pain wen having sex with my husband. But I haven't told my therapist cuz I'm embarras. (male) {I also have scoliosis} Does anyone have the same problem?
----------

Spondylolishthesis is a degenerative bone disease.(as I am sure you know)

This disease progressively gets worse slowly over time.

Your Physical Therapist should be a good resource for information. Call the doctor who diagnosed you to get further information. 'Google' it also, and you can find solid info.

If you are uncomfortable speaking to your male therapist, ask one of the female therapists for info, and to discuss the problem of discomfort during sex. You may be able to switch to a female therapist for your treatments.

Do not be embarrassed though. Your therapist should be a trained professional, and has been taught how to respond to delicate questions related to sex after injuries or disease processes. If they can not answer you right away, they certainly have resources available to them to find an answer for you, and offer help.  (+ info)

spondylolisthesis?

im 14, and found out at the hospital that i have, spondylolisthesis. i guess since im at level 4, i need to have surgery to fix the problem. Has anyone ever had this surgery before? does it hurt afterwards. r u able to heal afrterward quickly???please i need answers im so scared!
----------

Im sorry to hear that you have this.... I am having back surgery later this year ... but have talked to several people who have had the surgery already.
From what I have been told is that you will experience some discomfort afterward (though if you are at stage 4, it wont be any worse that what you are feeling now). But pain medication will take care of most of the discomfort. Most people are able to get up and walk around with little or no pain within 3 to 4 days.
The majority of the people I spoke to said that they now have no back pain.... which is what I am looking forward to.  (+ info)

What are some safe and relatively pain free exercises for someone with spondylolisthesis?

Spondylolisthesis is slippage in the spine causing walking problems and sciatica. I swim but it is not enough, maybe because I cannot do it enough. Any suggestions would be helpful. thank you.
Thank you Curt. I didn't ask for a trainer only some lay suggestions for exercises, maybe from someone a bit familiar with back issues.
----------

Strengthen your core muscles. If you can find a Pilates instructor who is knowledgeable about spondylolisthesis, that would be good.

Find a Chiropractor who is knowledgeable about spondylolisthesis. In some cases (like mine), it can help a lot. In other cases, or if the chiro does not know what he or she is doing, they can make things worse.

Go to an Orthopedist and get x-rayed and evaluated. The ortho can then send you to physical therapy where they can give you just the right exercises for your specific case.  (+ info)

Do you know of any charities that directly help people with spondylolisthesis?

Do you know of any charities that directly help people with spondylolisthesis? I have a family member who suffers from this condition, and I'd like to support a charity that works to do research on this or that helps people who have been diagnosed with it. Thank you.

Can ceragem therapy be used for patients of spondylolisthesis?

I suffer from Spondylolisthesis of L5 over S1. Is using ceragem advisable. I have low back ache .
----------

no. ceragem creates heat. heat adds to the inflammatory process. massage is not especially good for spondylolisthesis. try a physical therapist or chiropractor. i am sure the doc who diagnosed you explained that your problem is a break or lack of union when you were younger.  (+ info)

What are the side effects and of surgery for spondylolisthesis?

I am 13 years old. I have gone to P.T so many times and a brace didn't help. Since I hear this condition only gets worse over time, I have a feeling I will be getting surgery very soon. If you have gotten the surgery any advice or if you could share your experience that would be great.
----------

I also have spondylothesis along with 2 fractured vertabrate and bad deterioration in my lower back. Im only 17 and they told me that sometime in the next 10 years i will be getting surgery. Mine rarely bothers me the only thing i did for it was physical therapy.
Also i would recommend waiting as long as possible becaus my orthopedic surgent told me that in a couple of years they will have a new way to deal with the problem that is much less painful.
Hope it helped  (+ info)

Have you ever heard of retro-spondylolisthesis of the spine?

My girlfriend has back trouble after she fell off a horse a few years ago , and she saw a chiropractor who said she had verterbrae slippage or spondylolisthesis in the lumbar region. She recently saw a spine specialist who took x-rays and she actually had retro-spondylosisthesis, meaning instead of the 2 vertebra not lined up and pressing inward, they were pressing outward at the weak point. I looked up the word in a couple of medical books and couldn't find anything like this diagnosis or description. Anybody familiar with it or does it go by another word?
----------

Spondylolisthesis is a slippage of one vertebral body upon the next lower vertebral body. The slippage may be forward (antegrade) or backwards (retrograde.) The slippage can be minimal to severe. Minimal may cause no symptoms but moderate to severe can cause severe back pain due to resultant pressure on the spinal cord or nerve rootlets. The reason for the slippage is absence erosion or fracture of both of the pars interarticularis of the slipping vertebra. This may be congenital or traumatic in origin. The vertebral bodies can be realigned and immobilized surgically if necessary.  (+ info)

I had have spondylolisthesis what should I look forward to?

I am a 26 year female and I was diagnosed about a month with spondylolisthesis which means that in my vertebrae, lumbar 5 has slipped into scrum 1. My doctor said that I need to see a neurosurgeon and talk about the possibilities of a spinal fusion. I am very scared especially after he told me that there was a possibility of paralizes. I am a mother of three and attend college full-time. Is there anything more that I should know or consider?
----------

I have the same condition in my 5th and 6th cervical vertebrae. I'm 52 now, was diagnosed 15 years ago. I had an exceptional orthopedist. He is one of the top surgeons in my area, and he advised AGAINST surgery. I had extremely limited range of motion, and he prescribed exercises to improve it. I did the exercises and they worked. My range of motion is still nearly normal, and I have almost no pain or discomfort, just occasionally.

He advised against the surgery because it is not a cure for the condition, it just relieves it for a time. In several years, you will need surgery again, and gradually the surgery is less and less effective.

If you are willing to try the exercises for awhile, you might find they help you. Ask your doctor about it, and if he is hesitant, find another doctor. And before ANY surgery, you should always get a second opinion.

Good luck!!  (+ info)

I have spondylolisthesis grade 2 and can not even do my dishes what can I do?

I only can do little bit of dishes then I have to sit down. When the pain go away then get up do a little more sit down again. My body just don't motor and it is a discomfort pain due to I do take Hydroco/apap. They help with the severe pain but still feel a little pain. I just want to be able to do things I use to.
----------

Pace yourself.

Do as much as you can before the pain increases, then sit down. It helps me to set a timer (when I remember to) so that I stop after about 10 minutes, rest or do a different activity, and go back to what I was doing.

Is there someone who can help around the house? My mom has taken over my laundry for me which has helped to keep the general pain levels a little lower, she also loads the dishwasher when she comes over. Every little bit helps.

Is Occupational therapy an option for you? I was in a multidisciplinary spine treatment program which included seeing my spine doc, a physical therapist, and a psychologist for chronic pain. My biggest challenge has been to pace myself, when I'm feeling good (5 out of 10 on the pain scale) I tend to try to 'catch up' with what I've not been able to do. Then I end up with a major flare up, flat on my back and useless.  (+ info)

What are ways to treat spondylolisthesis?

This is a medical condition pertaining to the vertebrae.
----------

I think this is what doctors told me I have. It's when your vertebraes move apart when you like twist or bend or whatever, right? If it's the same thing, I was told by the doctor that I would basically have to just deal with it for the rest of my life unless I wanted surgery that isn't guaranteed to work anyway. I find that going to the chiroprator works pretty well. I went twice a week for two years and it worked for me. Now I just have to go every once in a while, like once or twice a month. Other than that I haven't had much luck getting relief from pain.  (+ info)
