How is the heart rate affected by a spinal cord injury?

Will the vagus nerve be affected or is it something to do with the spinal cord?
----------

It depends a bit on where the injury occurs.

The vagus nerve shouldn't be injured by a spinal cord injury (it comes down with the carotid artery, fairly anterior to the spinal column). The vagus nerve is parasympathetic, secretes acetylcholine and slows the heart rate.

The sympathetic nerves in the thoracic area (I forget the details)... these ARE likely to be severed by a high thoracic spinal cord injury. These secrete norepinephrine and tend to accelerate the heart rate. They also maintain blood vessel tone pretty much everywhere.

So if you cut the spinal cord in such a way that you lose sympathetic function but the vagus is intact... what would you expect to happen to the heart rate?

Good luck!  (+ info)

What are the risks and benefits of a spinal cord stimulator?

I'm contemplating a spinal cord stimulator for RSD, and pain in my right arm. My doctor gave me some videos, but they're really commercial. It doesn't mention any of the risks. Thank You!

There are a lot of people with RSD who have answered this question at http://www.raceagainstpain.com. Search through the forums and you'll find some really good information.  (+ info)

How long does it take for a L45 spinal fusion to heal?

I had a spinal fusion 2 1/2 weeks ago and it's feeling better (incision pain) but I'd like to know how long it will take before the pain is gone. Simple as that. Thanks for your answers in advance!
----------

I think it can take a few months for pain to subside with rehab.

Healing occurs similarly to any fracture. To see some healing of bone on x-ray takes about 6 weeks.
To see bone graft healing on x-ray can take 3-4 months & recovery continues up to a year post surgery.  (+ info)

How long does the headache last with a spinal?

I had a c-section on may 31 of this year. They gave me a spinal and I have had the worse headache since then. I didnt notice it as much when I was on the stronger pain killers, but now that I am off of them, it's horrible. How much longer will this last?
----------

It is drug side effect.
pl see what suits you.
If you are in cold country use all warm things.
Pl try cold water bath and observe if in hot country, if pain increases use warm.
If you have cough/cold body hot water bath will help.
Massage and exercise in front of morning sun is good thing, pl try.
Pl try simple acupressure given below for immediate relief.
If it fails you will have to go for Acupuncture.

There is hardly any medicine for H/A OR MIGRAINE. Not only these but for RA, OA, Back ache, Ear ache/ringing, Stomach ache and almost all painful diseases. Hence they become chronic.

Acidity, WORRY, sadness, excessive wind, cold , heat, sour food and sinusitis, constipation, intestinal inflammation; drug side effects, stress, bad smell, TV & COMPUTER SOMETIMES, Blockage in the flow of Vital Energy, BODY CONSTITUTION etc are their causes.
None of them can be treated with medicine.
Our 100% success in treating migraine &H/A confirms it.

Acupuncture is the best treatment.
I can treat it with naturopathy and YOG, but how can you manage pl see.

Pain killers don't treat the pain but we loose the sense of pain for some time; in that duration our body itself treats sometime and credit goes to meds.
The useless drugs have tremendous power of side effects like liver/kidney failures, ulcer, inflammation of intestines and lot more.

Avoid late sleeping if possible; worry, tension, spicy foods, sour fruits, stale bakery foods, SMOKING and alcohole.

Sweet foods, COCOANUT WATER,sweet fruits like dates, milk, rice, SPROUTS, SALADS and good sleep will help if cough is not there. If cough use steamed pulses, salads, sprouts, honey and dates, warm water.

But you try one herbal remedy- two drops of drumstick leaves' juice in opposite nostril if one side pains and both nostrils if full H/A will give you rescue. Betel leaf helps but it is very strong.

If it is acute pl search a painful point (with round tipped pen/jimmy) 3-6 mm behind your thumb nail and press it, H/A will disappear within 30 seconds.

For forehead/eye pain the points are in front of nails on the finger tips or 3-7 mm below.

It may disappear naturally too.

What anitibiotics can lower white blood cell count in spinal fluid?

Just as stated in title. What anitibiotics are there to use to lower white blood cell count in spinal fluid?
----------

Antibiotics don't directly affect white cell count in any fluid.
If there's a bacterial infection, it causes the cell count to go up as the body tries to fight the infection. If the right antibiotic is used to fight the infection, the cell count goes down as the infection heals.
So, first you have to identify why the white cell count is up. Bacterial infection is only 1 possible cause, and it's the only cause that can be treated successfully with antibiotics. If it is bacterial, then you have to pick the antibiotic that works for that specific bacteria. There is no single antibiotic that will work in every situation.  (+ info)

Would you feel comfortable if you had to have spinal/back surgery and the surgeon was a scarved muslim woman?

I am really planning to become a neurologist (the one who does surgery on the nerves, back, and spinal cord)when i grow up. im muslim and i want to help other people feel better cuz my dad had a disk herniation. I know that many people suffer from this but dont recieve help. But i am worried that a lot of people would not be comfortable enough to have surgery and have me operate on them lol. I dont see many Muslim surgeons either (women)Would you be ok with it?
----------

I wouldn't care one bit. People should only concerned with how competent a surgeon is. Not with what he/she wears.

Go for it!  (+ info)

What is the difference with an epidural and a spinal?

I see people writing about different pains from a spinal or an epidural when giving birth... is there a difference? Does an epidural hurt?
----------

I had a spinal; I had to because I was having a c section. I didn't want to see the needle, so I don't know how big the needle is, but it was injected directly into my spine. It hurt like hell for 4 seconds, and then I was numb from the neck down for 12 hours.
With an epidural, you have a catheter hanging from your back.  (+ info)

What is the difference between a Epidural and a spinal block?

As I had a c-section, with my daughter it was an emergency one. and I had to be put out because I did not get numbed, I only got half way numbed.
So What is it that happened? What did I have? a spinal or a epidural? and what is the difference?
----------

Epidural

This is a combination of a local anaesthetic and a narcotic that continuously relieves pain in the lower part of the body. An epidural is given with a catheter into the epidural space, which surrounds the spine area of your body. A small test dose may first be administered to determine how the medication will affect you. Once it is deemed safe, a continuous flow may be administered with the help of a catheter. While receiving an epidural, the foetal heart rate is monitored continuously, as is the mother’s blood pressure. It takes about 20 minutes to administer an epidural block and another 20 minutes for it to take effect.
Using an epidural allows a mother to remain fully awake. Additionally, the baby should not be affected in any way. It is also possible to receive a "walking epidural," which still blocks the pain of labour, but leaves you with enough lower body strength and muscle to walk about. The combination of these two becomes much more affective than the two used separately.

Spinal Blocks

With this kind of medication a dose of anaesthetic and a narcotic drug is given through direct injection into the spinal fluid. The pain relief is speedy and the affect lasts for a few hours.
As compared to an epidural, a spinal block differs in two ways. First it is administered directly into the fluid surrounding the spine; secondly a catheter is not used, and instead a one-time injection is given. For someone who is fast reaching labour and does not have the time required for the administration or the delayed affect of an epidural, a spinal nerve block is a better choice. It is also suggested for women who want pain relief late in labour.

This medication is also used by doctors during caesarean sections as it not only gives pain relief but also helps in blocking the motor nerves making the mother feel totally numb from chest down. Some common spinal blocks use chloroprocaine or lidocaine as anaesthetics and fentanyl or meperidine as narcotics.  (+ info)

How long does a spinal tap last?

I have to have a spinal tap. The doctor says I have to be there 2 hours prior. How long does the actual procedure last. I took the day off that day but my fiance has to work at 3 and the procedure starts at 1. He is the only one that I have to drive me home afterwards. Will they keep me there for a little while after or should I reschedule for an earlier time?
----------

I've had 4. The actual procedure lasts about 15-30 minutes at the most. However, they will want u to stay for 30-90 mins afterwards to make sure the puncture hole closes up.  (+ info)
