Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction?

I've lost the past four years of my life becoming progressively more sedentary as I've dealt with excruciating right upper quadrant abdominal pain. The doctor suspects Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction and/or blocked bile ducts. A recent hydascan showed that my gallbladder isn't functioning well, but six months ago it was fine, so I doubt that the pain is caused by my gallbladder because this pain has been going on much longer. I've completely lost my life to it. I can't walk my dogs, I can't exercise, I can't go on outings that require activity of any kind without enduring horrendous pain. Usually I just putter around the house trying to get at least something useful done, but sometimes the pain is so bad I can't even stand up long enough to do the dishes. I'm on a cocktail of medication that havent made a difference and am potentially having my gallbladder removed, for all the help that will do. Does anyone have any experience with pain of this magnitude? What was yours, what did you do?
----------

I am sorry for your condition and hope you will get a definite cure for this.
I am a doctor and I have seen many patients with this condition. If the scan has not shown any stones, and there is no evidence of cholecystitis, why they should remove your GB. I would suggest endoscopy and if needed, any intervention through this.

Anyone suffer from Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction?

So...my gallbladder ultrasound with CCK (dye) was fine but the test caused a lot of discomfort...soo....My doctor says he thinks it's probably SOD which he'd use blood pressure meds to calm the sphincter muscles down that lead from the gallbladder. But then he never called back or sent out the prescription so I'm just waiting for a follow up appointment. But I think he's concerned with giving it to me because I have dysautonomia and so I have low blood pressure anyways...

Anywho! It's hurting right now and I'm trying to stay calm and collected and just let it pass. It's throbbing sharp pain. My temps about 99.5. I wish it would just pass now...but sometimes it takes 24 hours to pass. Sometimes it takes 10 minutes...

So my question is- Does anyone here have SOD? How can I help ease the spasms while I'm waiting for the follow-up?

Hi Gretchen Anne

I have read that magnesium deficiency plays a role in gallbladder dysfunction. I've included some links. Ignore the commercial aspects of some of them. I mean to share them only as information.

You might try increasing your magnesium intake (slowly) and soaking in epsom salt baths. Perhaps you'll experience a relaxing of the Sphincter of Oddi.

Also, here is a Google search of dysautonomia and magnesium. Looks like there might be a connection.

I hope this helps a little!

How can I find a doctor who specializes in Gallbladder and Sphincter of Oddi disfunction in California?

I know I have a problem with either my gallbladder of sphincter of oddi but all basic test have turned out normal so now I need to see a specialist. How can I find a good doctor who will be able to help me?
----------

hi, i had a lot of problems after gallbladder surgery:my family Dr sent me to a gastroenterologist(im in Canada)
You can have a procedure done called ERCP.Not all Drs do this medical procedure:do a search, checking what medical facility does the highest "number" of ERCP.Its as simple as this:practice makes perfect. The more ERCP a Dr does, the better he gets.
If the sphincter is really bothering you,(i think thats happening to me)
the Dr can simply cut it!  (+ info)

Spasms of the sphincter of Oddi (hepatopancreatic sphincter) Symptoms?

Can anyone tell me the symptoms of "SOD" caused by post-cholecystectomy syndrome?
----------

Usually you have pain in the upper quadrant of the abdomen or in the center near your sternum. You may have nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting, or pain that radiates to your back and shoulder blades. Sometimes you can get pancreatitis. You may also get jaundice if the bile is backing up in the liver duct and also hepatitis.

They can do an endoscopy with an ERPC, however alot of doctor's are hesitant to do this until they are sure (as there is a higher risk for pancreatitis). Sometimes, the SOD is hard to diagnose as it is often mistaken for a non-functioning gallbladder. A HIDA scan may show that your gallbladder isn't functioning (even though it is)....because the sphincter is causing the bile to back up which makes it look like the gallbladder isn't working. Many people have their gallbladders removed and then when the symptoms continue...they realize it is a sphincter problem.

Good luck to you. I have been dealing with this same thing since September. I am waiting to see if I have another attack before the doctor's go in to do an ERPC.
Make sure you trust your G.I. doctor before they do the ERPC.  (+ info)

Which term is more common: Sphincter of Oddi, the hepatopancreatic sphincter or Glisson's sphincter?

Like to use in a report? Thanks!
----------

The most common of three would be the Sphincter of Oddi.
The three terms apply to the same function.
It controls the secretions from the liver, pancreas and, gallbladder into the duodenum of the small intestine.
Of interest, the Sphincter of Oddi is named after Ruggero Oddi.

I hope that this helps.

Sphineter of Oddi Dysfunction ?

I have been diagnosed with Sphineter of Oddi Dysfunction and my doctor gave me Amitriptyline to suppress the pain I have been having. I took the medicine one day and had trouble focusing all day. Is there some other type of medicine besides an anti depression to help with this condition? Or an herbal alternative?

Look in yahoo groups, there are a few awesome support groups for this disorder and they have tons of advice.   (+ info)

Does clipping the sphincter of Oddi cause diarrhea?

I just had a gall stone block my common bile duct and it was removed by ERCP. That was last week. I have no stones in the gallbladder. Still have frequent nausea too. Not taking any medications for this at this time other than Bentyl PRN. Feeling really terrible.
----------

Sorry you're feeling so poorly. My sister had the ERCP too. It really did a number on her! She also has bad diarrhea and pain. It also caused her pancreatitis to worsen, in my opinion of course no way to prove so. The ERCP is thought to be predominantly harmful there are just so many problems with symptoms after it. Anyways I am not the expert here, but my family and I did do a great deal of research on the problem and procedure. NOt much information on the net, comparatively. I hope you feel better soon :)  (+ info)

Sphincter of Oddi?

I've had pain in my right side for years. They took out my gallbladder about 5 years ago and it didn't help the pain. My dr's starting to think maybe sphincter of oddi and I was curious if anyone's had this problem? How do they diagnose it? Does what the do to fix it actually help??
Thanks for your help.
Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction is what the dr. actually thinks it is...Sorry if I wasn't clear.
----------

Everyone has a Sphincter of Oddi. It is the place where digestive enzymes from the liver and pancreas flow into the small intestine. I suggest you get a new doctor if that's what he/she told you. Or perhaps, you misunderstood what he/she said.  (+ info)
