How do doctors treat you for smoke inhalation?

It depends on the severity, usually for mild to moderate smoke inhalation, we'll just give you pure oxygen and periodically check your blood gases (the amount of oxygen, carbon dioxide and more importantly, carbon monoxide in your bloodstream)

With more severe inhalation, you've typically inhaled hot gases as well, and there will be a thermal injury to the lining of the lungs (ie a burn). In these more severe cases, there is a very strong risk of the airways swelling and filling with fluid. In that case you might need to be put on a ventilator, and be given meds to reduce the swelling.  (+ info)

In a fire, do most peolpe die of smoke inhalation or burns??

I am devestated as a local farm across the road has burnt down and horses stables caught fire. Some horses died and I am so upset to think of an animal in pain. I was wondering if a stable was on fire, would the smoke kill an animal without it suffering and burning. I am finding it hard to cope the idea of horses in pain. does smoke inhalation kill quickly or slowly?
----------

In a house fire smoke inhalation is the big cause of death. That's why you were taught as a kid (and should remember, now) to get as low as you can in a fire and place a wet towel or shirt over your mouth and nose to filter and cool the air that you bring in.

Not to be morbid, but smoke inhalation wouldn't be exactly without suffering. Imagine standing in the smoke from a campfire and not being able to get away from it. The only difference is that the gases released from a house burning is that the gases are a lot more dangerous. Once you inhale them, you are not getting enough oxygen to live. Depending on the density and heat of the smoke, it may take 2 to 10 minutes to pass out or die.

Also, in a barn/stable fire, the ventilation may be adequate enough to cause the smoke to be removed quickly, which may not cause the horses to suffocate.  (+ info)

I got a traumatic brain injury in 2003. Now, whenever I smoke some weed I just get extremely sleepy. Why?

The TBI didn't do much, pretty much made my left hand uncoordinated.

Just before the injury, I used to get Nice & high.

Now I can't smoke bud without wanting to go right to sleep!

Hopefully some of you have a similar situation…
----------

My friend has a similar situation.
He is not supposed to get high with anything other than legal.
Once once took too much , I'm not talking about weed here.
His head was aching , he had a bad day.
Maybe the brain injury has made your brain cells weak? I'm just guessing here.
Also brain injuries are supposed to be taken care of.
Does the same happen to you with alcohol or any other thing?
i think you should try other things.
have a nice day

Can someone die from smoke inhalation?

Let's say someone was in a fire and they had to be brought to the hospital. The doctors got him/her to breathe but they were still going to die because the damage was too bad. Is that possible? Would they need a new heart or something for them to live?
----------

it's not the heart that suffers as much as the lungs. Also the bad thing about smoke inhalation is that the carbon monoxide replaces the oxygen molecule in the hemglobin and this starves the body of the oxygen it needs.
Yes people die all the time from smoke inhaltion due to damage to the lung tissue.  (+ info)

Brain injury, can I still smoke marijuana?

I just had a severe accident. That is close to 2 years away. If I liked smoking marijuana, would it be any different than after having an injury or does it meet evenly? In my coma, I was in a coma for a month and there was a small amount or trauma of brain injury. When your brain re-learns to fire back, is there anything, like will your brain re-fire incorrectly? Thanks for all your info.
----------

hell yeah!! i reccommend getting your medical marijuana license.. you can get a discount for that injury. the marijuana will make your brain feel good. soon enough, your brain will recognize i and be good as new :D  (+ info)

can smoke inhalation cause nausea and puking?

the stupid ass girls that live downstairs from us caught our stairwell on fire after putting out their ciggarettes in a crack in the wood of our 150 year old building. There was billowing smoke that we had to walk through to get out when the wood caught on fire. And our apt stinks of it. Now one of our roomates is throwing up and is very ill. could the smoke have caused this?
----------

yes. especially if the person has asthma. nausea and vomitting are not uncommon with an asthma flare. She should go to the doctor as she may need a bronchodialator.  (+ info)

Serious answers only please: Medical pros: Can smoke inhalation from a fire cause brain damage?

I am having a hard time understanding something, and I need help with this: I have a friend that told me his Dad was over come with smoke from a barn fire years ago - and he is now confined to a wheelchair resulting from the smoke and that it caused brain damage and he now has symptoms of Parkinsons....I can't divulge the reason I need to know, but can someone tell me how accurate this sounds? Thanks

Brain damage:
Yes; it is horribly common. Two articles that review the relation between smoke and brain damage:
Basic - MedlinePlus Cerebral hypoxia

More detailed - eMedicine Smoke Inhalation

Parkinson's like disease
Yes, but the relationship is poorly understood. It may be from chemicals in the smoke or carbon monoxide.

can i smoke whith a head injury?

i had an accident and was taken to hospital by ambulance after falling head first off my horse, they told me i have concussion but i dident clock on how bad they said it was. pobably not too bad, but thing is i need a cig but i don't know if its safe to smoke tobbacco yet? it has been nearly 40 hours since i had the accident maybe 48. i arent sure. will it be safe to have a smoke yet?
----------

While smoking is naturally bad for your health, its extremely bad during an illness or other health issue. Smoking slows down the blood flow which can lengthen healing times. So the main thing its gonna do if you smoke is, make your head injury heal slower. Chew some gum instead. Dont risk it hun.  (+ info)

question about smoke inhalation?

There has been a fire on going for several days at the mulch manufacturing plant my husband works at, it started sunday and continued strong through monday. It is still somewhat burning, but very much under control now. Problem is now he is having trouble breathing and his back and chest hurt. I am trying to convince him he needs to go to get checked out, but he's a guy and hates going to the hospital/DR. Any thoughts? I think it might be smoke inhalation, but could it take this long to cause a problem?
----------

it could seem so cause if it only recently occurred it would most likely be the smoke which is affecting his lungs and therefore causing pains in his chest. If anything it should go away if not safest thing to do is just get it checked but its probably nothing serious. Trouble breathing could mean heart problems but its highly unlikely if its only recently so in any case if it is persistent you should get him to see a doctor.  (+ info)

i know u can die from smoke inhalation but does that include pot smoke?

What part of "smoke inhalation" and "die" don't you understand?

Smoking Pot , if consumed in large enough quantities, can kill. A single pot cigarette has MORE chemicals than regular Camel cigarettes [and they are the worst for cigarettes ].

cigarettes is a very slow suicide ...pot smoking only medicates you while you are doing it....  (+ info)
