How does sleep deprivation affect young children?

I am of the understanding that children at age 7 need 10 hours sleep a night. If a child has a late night once a week, say only 7 or 8 hours, what are the effects regarding cognitive ability the following day? I have noticed that the child is irritable, uncooperative, testing and has dark rings under their eyes the following evening. Is this something I should be overly concerned about and what are the long term ramifications if it continues?
----------

No. Just make sure that you or your kids have good enough sleep, eat well, relax, exercise, and drink plenty of water :)  (+ info)

Is it true that Sleep deprivation and stress can cause a seizure?

I haven't got much sleep lately and heard that can cause a seizure. I also had a real bad anxiety attack yesterday and that that can be a trigger, So thats two things that provoke that i've had. Im kinda nervous that I might have one in my sleep even though I'm 18 and have never had one before that I know of.
----------

For sleep deprivation it would have to be a lot of sleep as in days of not sleeping. If you are not getting enough sleep every night it causes what are called "brain deficits" which means that you are not able to concentrate or do the things that you normally do as well as you normally do. One good nights sleep will make up for it. Is it possible that anxiety is preventing you from getting a full nights sleep. If you have another panic attack you should get help. Nobody has to suffer from anxiety that disrupts life. There are many safe medications that can help and there are therapies for anxiety. With the right therapy you won't need medication. If this continues please get some professional help.  (+ info)

What to do about suicidal thoughts from sleep deprivation?

Anxiety, paranoia, cognitive problems, symptoms of depression are all caused by going on two hours of sleep for years and years. Christians don't want to kill themselves but need answers on how to handle symptoms that come with only two hours of sleep, if that a night. Many nights I sleep half an hour and awake the same. Two hours is my normal sleep. Don't go there. I have been to every kind of doctor and do hypnosis and whatever else but sleep just won't come. The symptoms scare me.

How long does it take before I start hallucinating from sleep deprivation?

How many days? I'm trying out polyphasic sleep, and I think that I might start hallucinating from lack of sleep, even though I'll be getting some sleep, stories of hallucinations on the third/forth day of no sleep. Will I experience hallucinations? I'm doing the Überman schedule, which means 2 hours of sleep a day, 6 evenly spaced 20 min naps.

What type of things can sleep deprivation cause?

A lot of days I sleep just 3 hours to work the next day for 8 or 9 hours. A lot of times it's because I stay up late doing things.

I know this is probably unhealthy as I have been noticing changes in myself.

Sometimes when I go to sleep at 5am, I wake up at 8am or 9am without feeling sleepy at all. Is that normal?

Can not sleeping affect me much?
Thank you very much!

I do have all of those symptoms you mentioned and I was getting worried about them. I didn't know what it was.

Thankfully though, I have recently had thyroid tests and I came out fine.

Again, thank you.
----------

Do you have other symptoms like racing thoughjts, irritability or times when you feel down and sleep too much?

Have you had your thyroid checked recently?

Sleep is necessary for your body to rejuvenate, your mind to stay sharp and the muscle and organ tissue to regenerate.

You can develop physical and emotional.mental problems with sleep deprivation and it compounds over time.

See a health care provider and get to the bottom of this. It might be hormonal imbalance (ie thyroid) or a mood disorder like anxiety or bipolar disorder.

Get help and the sooner the better. It will be worth it for the peace of mind.

Hope this helps.

Is it possible to die of sleep deprivation?

I know you will definitely go insane, and that your immune system will shut down, but will you die? Will your heart stop? What happens after no sleep for 11 days?
----------

You'll die. That's a fact. You need a certain amount of restorative sleep just os that your brain and body can function. When certain functions don't function, e.g. control of heart rate, breathing, etc... You'll die. No question. It is a fact.  (+ info)

----------

i think it might. if not, it will affect everything else. it isnt healthy if you can avoid it.  (+ info)

How harmful is chronic sleep deprivation on your body?

I'm meaning somewhere in the neighborhood of 3 to 4 hours of sleep per night.
The person works two jobs to make ends meet, they don't have much of a choice.
----------

Your body needs at least 8 hours sleep per day.
Regularly getting only 3 or 4 hours sleep per day will most likely make you tired and frustrated, make you have less energy and possibly lose weight and overall well being. If this continues for a long period of time it could possibly cause depression.  (+ info)
