Will you body fight off a sickle cell trait gene during pregnancy?

I just miscarried and was informed that my boyfriend has the sickle cell trait, i'm not too sure if i have any trait or carrier but what are the odds if i reject him sperm because of that. what happens if we get pregnant again
----------

The miscarriage probably had nothing to do with his having the trait. The effects of sickle cell do not show up until a baby is several months old.

However, a pregnant woman with sickle cell is a high-risk pregnancy and needs close monitoring.

And please get yourself tested, so you and he can make some decisions about whether you want to risk having a child with sickle cell disease, or even whether you want to pass on a genetic defect to half your kids.  (+ info)

do both parents have to have the sickle cell trait for the child to have sickle cell anemia?

can one parent have the trait and the child inherit the total disease?
----------

Sickle cell disease is a genetic disorder.
You must receive one gene from each parent

Sickle cell anemia (SS) + "Normal" (NN) = Sickle cell trait (SN)

Sickle cell anemia (SS) + Sickle cell trait (SN) =
Sickle cell anemia (SS) 50% chance
Sickle cell trait (SN) 50% chance sickle cell trait (SN)
"Normal" (NN)
sickle cell anemia (SS)

sickle cell trait (SN) + normal (NN) = 50% sickle cell trait
50% normal (NN)

sickle cell trait (SN) + sickle cell trait (SN) =
25% sickle cell disease (SS)
50% sickle cell trait (SN)
25% normal (NN)

sickle cell trait(SN) + sickle cell disease (SS) =
50% sickle cell disease (SS)
50% sickle cell trait (SN)e

Sickle cell anemia (SS) + Sickle cell disease (SS) = Sickle cell anemia (SS)

Sickle cell anemia (SS) = Sickle cell disease (SS)

There are many other combinations
Take one gene from each parent

My mother has the trait (SN) and my father has the trait (SN) resulting in me having Sickle Cell Anemia (SS)  (+ info)

how likely is it that 2 people can have the sickle cell trait?

my husband is a carrier of sickle cell trait and want to know how likely it is i could be a carrier too. we were both born in africa.
----------

One in 12 African Americans carry the sickle cell trait. In some parts of Africa the rate of sickle cell trait is as high as 25%.

Having one sickle cell gene (trait) helps protect against malaria.
Therefore, in areas where malaria is more common, the trait is more common.

Since most carriers have normal blood counts, only a special test, called a "hemoglobin electrophoresis" indicates whether you have sickle trait.

I'm not sure where you live, but the Sickle Cell Foundation in Florida offers free screening to anyone who is worried about whether or not they carry the disease.

I don't know if they provide this only locally or all over the country, but if you contact them they can probably either help you or point you towards an organization in your area. I added a link in the sources below.

Good luck, and I hope all goes well!  (+ info)

myself and my wife have the sickle cell trait: she is pregnant. what are the chances our kid will have it?

i just found out my wife has the trait and i have it as well neither has the disease, what are the chances our newborn baby will have the sickle cell disease. Im worried to bring a sick kid into this world. Any help out there? knowledge is power: does our kid stand a chance of avoiding the disease. This is the reason most states still should perform blood tests before giving marriage licenses...
----------

Odds are 50:50 that your child will have the trait and NOT the disease. Odds are 1:4 that your child will have the disease and also 1:4 that your child will not even have the trait or the disease. Yes, your kid does stand a chance.  (+ info)

If Me and my partner has sickle cell TRAIT, does this mean my child will positively has the disease?

i have the trait and want to the now the percentage of my child being born with the disease.
----------

To have the Sickle cell disease the child would have to be homozygous for the trait (SS). If you and your partner both have the trait, meaning you are both heterozygous (AS) then there is a 25% chance that the child will be (SS) 50% chance of carrying the trait (AS) and 25% chance of being without the trait (AA)

Stumbled on this website, maybe it'll help you. The information is really clear and easy to understand
