what are the causes and how might septic shock be prevented?

I am sure there are more causes than one.....but the one I am for sure about is if: Say you had a twist in your intestine, and after a period of time, your intestine decided it was going to burst, and letting the stool into the body....that would most definitely give you septic shock. I know that it can make you very very very sick, and it can even cause death if it's not caught in time. Our feces are basically poisonous to our own bodies b/c they contain so much bacteria and such, that is why they are put away inside of an intestine...so that the stool can't mix with our other body systems. That is the main one that I am FOR SURE about...I want to say that you can also get some kind of septic shock from the blood, but not sure how or if that is even accurate, sorry :( Ummmm...how to prevent it, I am of no help on that one either...unless you are having problems with your bowels, if so, go see a gastroenterologist!! If you are in question whether you or someone you know might be having or could have septic shock...see a doctor IMMEDIATELY!!!  (+ info)

Could i get septic shock?
ive had my nose pierced for years, but i was changing my stud today and didnt wash my hands . i had to tug the stud out coz it had been in so long it was stuck so its really sore n bled a bit. could i get septic shock from that? i panic over everything :(
----------

It's highly unlikely, you might get an infection though if you don't start taking care of it. The nasal passages are one of the dirtiest parts of your body so that nose piercing needs to be cleaned more often, especially now that you've opened it up to be raw again.  (+ info)

Who has had more health problems after Septic Shock.?

I thought I just had the flu, after a week I was getting worse. This has still effecting my immune system and my organs are still not work to there full extent.
----------

It can take a while for things to get working better. Sometimes after a serious illness, organs never get back to their previous working condtion, but better than they were when you were so sick. Depends on age, and your other health problems, and also just your 'luck.' I've seen people so sick with septic shock, they needed dialysis, pacemaker for weeks. Months later, they are back on the gold course, leading a normal life. (my uncle) So, serious illness takes a toll. Make sure you follow your doctor's advice, and talk to them if you have new concerns or problems. If you are feeling depressed about your lack of progress, talk to them about that too. Cause your mind has alot to do with your healing. Hope you feel better soon!  (+ info)

Physician here:
Septic shock is a condition where the body is "overwhelmed" with bacterial toxins. The vessels in the body become "lose" and blood pressure drops. That is why physicians use "pressors" which medically raise BP. Blood perfusion (which gives our tissues oxygen) is compromised and can lead to muti-organ failure.
It takes time to get over, especially in people with diabetes. Diabetics have a compromised immune system...meaning that they can get infections easier and it takes longer for them to get rid of them. Many patients will recover, but it takes time. It also depends on how much your sister went through. Not knowing her other comorbities, it is quite hard to determine. Be patient with her. Her body has dealt with A LOT.  (+ info)

What causes Septic shock in otherwise healthy 35 yr old?

Today marks the 15th day that mu 35 yr old cousin Bobby is in ICU with septic shock. I need some kind of help. Here is the story

On November 19th 2009 we got a phone call from my cousin that his brother was admitted into ST LUKE'S hospital and was unconscious. We rushed down to the hospital right away. Bobby had been found in his room on the floor unresponsive. When the EMT's got to him, his blood pressure was 60/34. They admitted him into ICU and further tests revealed that he had septic shock. Doctors had a meeting with the entire family that night and told us that his mortality rate was VERY VERY HIGH. They told us that Bobby's Kidneys and Liver were failing. His bowel system was completely shut down. The only thing Bobby has going for him is his age, and he has a strong heart. They said that had he been a 70 yr old man, they would be advising us to prep for a funeral. They maxed him out on Blood pressure meds, and also gave him dialysis treatments. His WBC were "astronomically high" . He is on a ventilator and oxygen. The next day they flew in platelets from Bergen county NJ. We went through this for a few days and Bobby started to respond to us. He shook his head yes and no, and had hand movement. On Monday 11/30 an Xray, and cat-scan showed that Bobby had an air pocket in his intestine, they were not sure whether he had a hole in his stomach, colon, or intestine. Bobby needed emergency surgery, or he would die. The surgeon advised us all that Bobby's chances of making it through surgery were very low.. During surgery they removed a 3 ft section of his intestine, and his lower colon. They put him on a colostomy bag. After surgery his BP was 50/27.. They told us if he survived the night, it would be a miracle. So, Bobby made it through. The following day Bobby was bleeding out. His coagulation factor was well above 150 they told us they like to see it below 45. They began blood transfusions. From 1pm on Tuesday 12/1 to Wednesday 12/2 bobby received 15 units of blood (15 separate transfusions). They were changing his bandage every hr. The doctors advised us that it was now hr by hr for Bobby. Finally, yesterday Bobby stopped bleeding. He is no longer maxed out on BP meds and holding pressure on his own 146/80. My sister just called me and let me know that Bobby is receiving another dialysis and they plan on doing it for 3 and half hours. She talked to the Doctors, and they said that it's pretty much a wait and see thing. His WBC is still in the upper 30,000.. They told her they like to see it below 10,000. My question is what could have caused this? They say they don't know, and probably never will know. I see the mortality rate for septic shock is high, but even higher with multi-organ failure. What can we expect? I heard it all from DR's, but sometimes I feel "wait and see" is scary to hear...
I forgot to add that Bobby was on anti-psychotic medication. He is schitzo-effective. He was getting blood work done every two weeks to check his medication levels. This has been ongoing for the last 10 yrs. He is not a drinker, and he also has OCD. Other than that Bobby was otherwise "healthy". Another thing... They had said Bobby colon was massively dilated. He did have constipation problems, however the surgeon told us that he does not believe this was cause by constipation because when he opened him up, the stoole was all liquid..I am very thakful for every one of Bobby's doctors. I understand the communication "barrier" when it comes to "wait and see". I just read up on septic shock, and it's scaring me that after all this time, he could still die. . .He has held his own BP last week, however that changed rather quickly. Emotional Rollercoaster!!!
----------

Not much else you can do except "wait and see."
Did you say he is holding pressure on his own? That is a good sign!
I guess the doctor is very "conservative" and "cautious." regarding to your loved one's condition and prognosis. He just does not want to say something to set himself/herself up because ICU patients are walking a thin line when it comes to life and death. And no one can predict what is going to happen for the next 15 minutes.
I wish him well and I will definitely pray for him.
Please email me a message regarding to his outcome...if you don't mind!
By the way, septic shock caused by widespread infection. It is the most common cause of death in ICU in the U.S. When the EMT got to him, he was in the later phase of the septic shock....characterized by low cardiac output and low blood pressure...no longer produces urine and multiple organ failure may/may not occur.  (+ info)

the boy in my life has a lip piercing that has gone infected.

and also, his infection isnt as bad as mine was. its been infected for about 2 weeks now. and thats it.

soo ...my question is ...can you?

Info on Septic Shock, C-diff, etc?

My dad is 73 y/o in SICU with C-diff, septic shock, ARDS and DIC. He is currently on a breathing machine for almost 2 weeks. He is also receiving kidney dialysis. He has not urinated in almost 2 weeks and he has a partial lung collaspe along with fluid on the lungs. He has an irreruptable bowel and currently with a bag. He also has a large growth on his colon which at this point is unknown what it is. He is currently running a slight fever and on Fentinoyl for pain. There are been no reponse when he opens his eyes. His blood pressure has been mostly down however coming up slightly. They had to remove some pic lines because of all the infection in his body which is weeping out his skin. He is swollen however the swolleness has went down slightly. The ICU said he is holding on. I have been asking questions but I am not sure if I am asking the right questions. I certainly do not want him to suffer and now ICU is stating that you can only be on the breathing machine for a certain amount of time and a possible trach will be needed but there are high risks. I am searching for anyone with information and/or who can help me to ask what questions I should be asking. I have done some research but what I read is not good. Thank you for taking the time and reading.
----------

Sorry about your dad.
He has some very serious diagnoses including sepsis, ARDS and renal failure which on top of his advanced age make for a difficult prognosis. A tracheostomy is usually indicated if a patient is on a vent for more than 2 weeks however with sepsis and ARDS he will not be stable to have this procedure. The longer he is on the vent the more likely it is to get pneumonia and it will be more difficult to wean. All of these problems can be treated however all of them together will be difficult. You should sit down with the doctors and have them give you an idea of what they think the prognosis will be so that you can make better decisions regarding his care. Even if he survives all of these diagnoses it is unknown what his functional ability will be.  (+ info)

Info on c-diff and septic shock?

My dad is 73 y/o with a large mass on his colon. Prior to the first attempt at surgery he had a heart attack which delayed the surgery and bough him to ICU. Shortly thereafter he became weak and did not eat. During the second attempt at surgery he threw up and Dr's are saying he has a hole in the colon which made toxins go into his system in which he swallowed his own throw up. Currently he is in SICU with c-diff and septic shock. He is on 100% breathing machine and his kidneys are not working. His stomach is protruding and he is swollen along with severe meds helping his blood pressure and heart rate. I am looking to see if anyone else had a family member go through this and/or has knowledge of c-dif and septic shock. Thank you for taking the time to read
----------

I am sorry to hear that your dad is so sick. It is heartbreaking to see your dad like that - I have been through a similar situation with my dad who was 80.

Clostridium Difficile infection (i have had this) is usually caused by taking antibiotics - the antibiotics kill both good and bad bacteria in the bowel. C. Diff lives in the bowel of some people and sometimes after antibiotics, it grows back to an unhealthy level. This can be treated with flagyl (another antibiotic) and it is usually successful.

Septic shock is basically overwhelming infection through the entire body and the body goes into shock (major organs begin to fail). High levels of bacteria are in the blood. My baby girl was born with sepsis but with strong antibiotics, she got better.

You dad is old, and sounds as though his immune system is breaking down. He has a lot of serious things happening to him and the best place he can be right now is in the ICU getting all the treatment that he needs. Make sure you can be there with him when possible and keep up with what is going on - ask lots of questions and query anything that does not sound right. I hope that he can come out of this terrible time.  (+ info)
