Is Septic Shock some type of blood disorder?

Please give details on this condition.
----------

It is actually more the result of infection.

Septic shock is a very serious medical condition caused by decreased tissue perfusion and oxygen delivery as a result of infection and sepsis. It can cause multiple organ failure and death. Its most common victims are children, immunocompromised individuals, and the elderly, as their immune systems cannot deal with the infection as effectively as those of healthy adults. The mortality rate from septic shock is approximately 50%.

Has anyone had a family member die of Septic Shock?

My dad went into the hospital for a skin and muscle disease(which wouldn't of killed him), but got Septic Shock and died from the infection. It was totally unrelated to the illness he went in for. We're pretty sure he got infected at the hospital. Also the meds they gave him to get rid of the infection were so strong they caused internal bleeding. Just wondering if anyone lost someone to Septic shock in a similar situation?
----------

i myself have not...i'm very sorry to hear about your father. i do, however, work at a hospital in a department where i am made aware of any infection a patient has who is an inpatient. there are many hospital born infetions (ex. MRSA, VRE, CDIFF). unless i were to know what kind of infection that caused the sepsis i wouldn't be able to give you a half way accurate answer. however, the doctors should have tested him MORE than regularly and caught the internal bleeding (which was most likely GI) and changed the medication. it sounds more like it was directly cause by the internal bleeding but the sepsis could have initiated other organ failures.  (+ info)

b. Confusion, bradycardia, and truncal rash
c. Severe respiratory distress, jugular venous distention, and chest pain
d. Decreased cardiac output, hypertension, and poor skin turgor

a. Tachycardia, generalized edema, and warm skin
Septic shock is a high output shock due to vasodilatation caused by bacterial endotoxin. Hence skin can be warm, unlike in other forms of shock.  (+ info)

what to expect in end-stage kidney failure/ Septic Shock?

My husband grandfather was put into the hosptial yesterday. We found out that he was in Septic Shock today the dr told my husband that his Kidneys aren't producing urine. Has anybody had any experience in this and what we can expect?
At this time he has no confusion can talk normal etc. We are taking a passive treatment course. He also has pnuemia. Can his kidneys improve ?
----------

Delirium, he will be very confused, agitated and in pain, possible blood poisoning. He may need dialysis.

Also there is a possibility of him developing ascites which is an acumulation of fluid in the abdominal area.

Edit - Well it's a very good sign he's coherent. I have early stage kidney failure and I'm only 39. As far as I know it's permanent. Some people suggest drinking alot of water, however in my opinion this is not a good idea because if the kidneys are not functioning well this can actually do more damage.  (+ info)

How can endotoxin cause septic shock in a patient?

There are ways to categorize bacteria. One common method is how they stain either Gram positive or gram negative. Without getting to detailed, a gram negative bacteria has a thin lipid layer around it called endotoxin. If someone is septic with a gram negative bacteria, likely they would be treated with antibiotics. As the antibiotics kill off the gram negative bacteria the bacteria will break open or lyse. This is the cruel part, when the bacteria die and break open they release massive amounts of endotoxin as they die. So even if the bacteria are dying the person now must endure or live through the massive amount of endotoxin released.  (+ info)

I had 7 teeth pulled, and within less than 2 days I went into septic shock. Could there have been connection?

My kidneys were shutting down along with all other organs. I didn't know my kids, what day it was.I was in the hosp for 12 days before I knew what had happened to me If my daughter hadn't checked on me I would not be here. It's been suggested to me I should get a lawyer and sue the dentist for not premedicating me. Honestly I would only want this man to be held accountable for what he did to me and my family

Septic shock is a life-threatening reaction to a severe infection.

This would be an incredibly hard case to prove that he caused it.  (+ info)
