How is Toxic Shock exactly caused from tampon use?

I understand the risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) is related to tampon use, but I don't understand exactly what causes it. Is it caused when there is a dry tampon for nothing to absorb being in you for too long, or when a full tampon is not taken out in time?

So, ladies, if anyone has the answer, I would love to know.

What is toxic shock syndrome a result of?

I'm in a argument with my sister and cousin. My cousins says toxic shock is a result of the blood. My sister says it comes from the fibers in the tampon.Who's right?
----------

It comes from Bacteria that start to develop in the blood if it doesn't leave the body like it's supposed to. Basically if you leave a tampon in for too long the blood and dead tissue sit there and start to develop bacteria. The bacteria causes the toxic schock syndrom.  (+ info)

Can doctors in the ER confuse a death of being septic shock from overdose?

Don't know all the systems but doctor in the ER pronounced my ex husband with dying from septic shock. Or could it have been from an overdose from to many pills and booze.
----------

Did the emergency Dr. do a gastric lavage or ordered a toxicology panel and there were no medications found would rule out an overdose. If he presented with a high fever with low bloodpressure and abnormal blood work that would indicate sepsis  (+ info)

What are some good activities to do to cope with reverse culture shock?

I just got back from Costa Rica after 3 and a half months. I studied Spanish at a small institute there. I am now back in the states and am deling with reverse culture shock. Everything seems strange. I don't want to hang out with anyone and yet I don't want to feel lonely...it's weird. Does anyone have a similar experience or have any ideas as to how to cope with this? Thanks so much.

What can happen if a person who has had electrical burn or shock goes untreated?

My friend in another town was just shock by a wire that had 500+ volts, not sure the exact amount but it's way over the mark where you can ignore it. He has slurred speech and his heart rate it really fast but he absolutely refuses to go to the ER. If this goes untreated what can happen to him? I know it sounds dumb to have posted this question but he and the people w/ him refuse to take him to the hospital if he doesn't want to go, will he be okay?
They're working around the house they live at and they didn't think letting him drink and work w/ electricity would be a problem. I know, I know, it's all very ridiculous I'm just praying that he's okay, or will be okay in time. Someone called and told me that he's kind of jerking a little bit. This is so frustrating, Thank you so much for the answers so far!
----------

Depending where the current entered and exited his body - cooked internal organs - as well as cooked skin at the exit site. The heart beat is probably the most serious. You heart is run on electrical impulse - get that off kilter and it could be fatal. He is being very foolish. What the heck was he doing with that level of power - and was it a work related accident - or did he get in power lines while trying to break in somewhere - just looking for a reson why he won't go..  (+ info)

Anaphylactic shock and allergic reactions due to antibiotics. How do I recover from lingering side-effects?

I have experienced sever anaphylactic shock and allergic reactions after having taken erythromycin for about a week two years ago. I have experienced irregularly beating heart, extreme fatigue, muscle weakness, depression, anxiety, difficulty breathing, etc.

I still experience these symptoms and would like to recover from them.

How do I get back to "normal"? I'm sick and tired of being tired all the time.

Also, what other antibiotics should I avoid (other than erythromycin)?

Thanks for your help.
----------

You really need to go to an allergist--now! Explain what happened and your ongoing problems. He or she will give you a list of medications to avoid and may do more allergy tests to make sure this doesn't happen again. He or she may also give you an prescription for an Epi-pen so if it does happen again, you can administer the live-saving treatment before the EMT's arrive to help.

Your breathing problems might be related to asthma or another undiagnosed problem. The allergist can also help with this.

If your anxiety goes on, consider going to a mental health professional (see below) who can help. You may be experiencing post-traumatic stress.

Some things that might help you feel less anxious:
- stop all caffeine and other stimulants
- see a therapist and talk about your experience--it was traumatic and you need to talk it through to get rid of the leftover fear and anxiousness
- talk to your family and friends about how you're feeling
- avoid eating chicken or meats that were raised using antibiotics (traces can remain in the meat and cause less severe reactions)

Good luck to you!  (+ info)

What would be the early signs of toxic shock syndrone?

If you noticed a green discharge would that be a sign of something more severe. Not trying to sound gross, which it is.
But I don't know if this person should run to the hospital or wait it out. No fever, just feels a crampy feeling.
According to the medical book you can get a toxic shock syndrone from having things in there to long like tampons.
Which she is in between that happening, but she doesn't feel good.
----------

This could be exactly what the problem is.
Here is a link to another medical study with a green discharge in which the patient had toxic shock although this patient's was from a vag sponge, the discharge was mentioned the same.

This is a serious issue and she should seek medical attention. She may be able to go to the local planned parenthood or family planning center if she's low income or needs financial consideration.
