Can bouncing in a jolly jumper give a baby shaken baby syndrome ?

Just wondering how it's any different, cause she sure bounces herself around. If it was unsafe, it wouldn't still be on the market ?
I only put her in it for 15 minute stretches and I DO supervise her, however I can't control how high or fast she bounces herself....

No it cannot and I remember thinking the same thing when we got one. My guy would BOUNCE the house down!  (+ info)

Weird question-Can an unborn baby get shaken baby syndrome?

I was wondering because we just got back from vacation and we had to drive down the bumpiest road!!!!!! I know this question is probably stupid but im just wondering. Thanks!
----------

not at all stupid or weird.

if it was possibly i think it would take more then a bumpy road or any force that oyu could acctually come across, maybe if you stuck your belly in a paint shaker, at the hardwear store.

but the baby has fluid all around it that helps to coushin it and make any bumps less and absorbs much of anything not to mention how the uteris moves around, it isn't fixed into place so it gives and its movements can help to absorb a lot...
and the babys skull is so soft that it may not be able to do much to the brain and the neck of beby is well protected by position of baby...

and the most problems from sbs is from the neck "snapping" the head back and forth and that can't happen in utero ther is no room.

it would take something really freaky to happen to have anything close to it, but heck star for you!  (+ info)

Can firmly spanking a child on the bottom cause Shaken Baby Syndrome?

I spanked my child today on her bottom because she had not been listening ALL day and I was at my witts end. I spanked her firmly 2 times and I called my BF and tried to talk to her and she told me that spanking can cause SBS? Is this true?
----------

Not if it's done properly. Never spank (or give a time-out, or take a toy away, or use any other kind of punishment) when you are angry or frustrated. And never hold a child by the arm and swat their bottom while they are standing. Calm yourself down first, then take her across your lap and hold her firmly in position, then firmly spank her bottom.  (+ info)

Can picking up a 22 month old to quick cause Shaken Baby Syndrome?

We were in the Toy store for over an hour, trying relentlessly to get our Daughter out of it...So, My husband finally forefully grabbed her and slung her on his hip...I am just scared this might have caused damage or something...I know it sounds silly, but I just worry alot. If godforbid it had caused damage, would the signs be immediately?
----------

I'm an overprotective mom, too. Maybe this story will help you worry less. It did me....

My son has always been a biter. When he was a little over two, I picked him up because he was doing something he shouldn't. He bit my shoulder. It hurt, so I pulled him away from my body. At that moment, he arched back, and I couldn't hold him. He fell five feet straight to the floor. It scared us both, and of course, I called the doctor immediately. But, he was fine. (Stopped biting, too.) Kids are sturdy. They are made to take the normal knocks in life, plus a little extra.  (+ info)

This may be a silly question, however, Can a baby give themselves Shaken Baby Syndrome?

My Daughter is 14.5 months and when she gets mad or someone tells her no, she shakes her head back and forth pretty hard. Can that occur?
----------

No.

Sadly too many people think that SBS can be caused by rough play and normal activities. Its not to say that you can't hurt a baby with rough play but you won't cause SBS; and giving misleading information about it does not help anyone.

Any impartial observer witnessing something that could cause SBS would know that what they are seeing is child abuse, end of story. Now parents that are angry and have lost control are not impartial observers.

The National Center and its International Advisory Board issues this position statement on the relationship between shaken baby syndrome and normal affectionate handling or innocent play activities:

Shaken baby syndrome, which may result in severe brain trauma, is caused when a child is violently shaken such that the head is subjected to back and forth motion in one or more directions resulting in rapid repeated severe acceleration and deceleration of the head. The medical literature and ongoing research around the world have characterized shaken baby syndrome as well as other forms of accidental and non-accidental injury. Activities involving an infant or a child such as tossing in the air, bouncing on the knee, placing a child in an infant swing or jogging with them in a back pack, do not cause the brain, bone, and eye injuries characteristic of shaken baby syndrome.

The National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome recognizes and supports positions offered by The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME) in reference to the mechanisms that cause shaken baby syndrome. The forces required are distinctly different than those sustained by children in the activities described above or in short falls.

The American Academy of Pediatrics Technical Report on shaken baby syndrome reads:

The act of shaking leading to shaken baby syndrome is so violent that individuals observing it would recognize it as dangerous and likely to kill the child. Shaken baby syndrome injuries are the result of violent trauma. The constellation of these injuries does not occur with short falls, seizures, or as a consequence of vaccination. Shaking by itself may cause serious or fatal injuries. In many instances, there may be other forms of head trauma, including impact injuries. Thus, the term shaken/slam syndrome (or shaken-impact syndrome) may more accurately reflect the age range of the victims (who are not always babies) and the mechanisms of injury seen. Such shaking often results from tension and frustration generated by a baby's crying or irritability, yet crying is not a legal justification for such violence...

...Shaken baby syndrome awareness programs that erroneously state that shaken baby syndrome may be caused by bouncing a child on a knee, by tossing him in the air, or even by rough play are to be discouraged, because they are inaccurate and may cause parents who have not abused their child to feel guilty. (American Academy of Pediatrics [AAP], 2001)

Additionally the National Association of Medical Examiners Ad Hoc Committee on Shaken Baby Syndrome states:

...experts in many scientific fields have investigated whether such apparently innocent practices as tossing a baby into the air and other playful maneuvers might cause brain damage by a similar shaking mechanism. Currently, it is generally accepted that such playful practices do not result in injuries to the young child's brain. The type of shaking that is thought to result in significant brain injury involves holding the child by the thorax or an extremity and violently shaking the child back and forth, causing the head to forcefully whiplash forward and backward with repeated accelerations and decelerations in each direction. (Case et al., 2001)  (+ info)

Is it true that by bouncing your baby to burp them, it can cause shaken baby syndrome?

My husband told me that bouncing them on your knee can cause shaken baby syndrome. I was just wondering if it was true.
----------

i was always scared of accidentally giving my baby shaken baby syndrome until i saw a show about the subject. they used a doll to show how hard you actually have to shake the baby in order for it to happen and it was very very hard shaking. i was shocked anyone would think of shaking anything like that never mind a baby. i suppose you can imagine a cocktail shaker being shaken really hard and fast but imagine that's the baby. its head goes back and forth. so unless that's how you burp your baby i doubt it.

i have heard, however, that it's better to rub the baby in order to get it to burp rather than bouncing/patting. not sure why that is though. i found it didn't matter how light/hard you pat the burp comes up eventually.  (+ info)

Could this have caused harm or Shaken Baby Syndrome to my child?

My MIL had my daughter standing up in her lap. She was holding on to my daughter by my daughters hands. Then, my daughters knees went under her and her head went back kinda quick and it scared my MIL so she pulled her back up real quick. My daughter didnt fall or anything, its just her head went back and then when my MIL pulled her back up, it came up quickly.
----------

No i think your daughter will be fine, babies can handle jostles like that. I know its hard not to worry but i'm sure she's just fine.

Shaken baby is when some one really shakes the baby and their head and neck whip back and forth. My doctor assured me normal bouncing motions, falls, etc won't cause shaken baby but if your really concerned and worried, call your pediatrician, they can give you LOADS of information about the topic.  (+ info)
