My 6 year old daughter has petit mal seizures. Is there a chance she will grow out of them?

She was diagnosed a year ago with petit mal seizures, because she was staring off frequently. I was just wondering if anyone know anyone that has grown out of them?

If somebody has seizures due to a certain medical illness would it still be called epilepsy?

If somebody had seizures due to a condition like Lupus or a brain injury would it still be considered epilepsy?
----------

Epilepsy is the occurrence of 2 or more "UNPROVOKED" seizures. Once that happens a person is diagnosed as having epilepsy. If a person has more than one seizure due to a tumor etc, then they are diagnosed as having secondary epilepsy.  (+ info)

How common are seizures in a one year old? Will my daughter be okay?

My 16 month old daughter has been having what looks like sudden breathing attacks for the past few months, where she starts crying and then can't catch her breath. Then her eyes roll back and she goes blue and still won't breathe for a minute. They have only recently gotten worse and when we called the ambulance for it today the EMT said that in his opinion he thinks that what she is experiencing is seizures. We already have an appointment scheduled for today to see for sure but has anyone ever heard of this or experienced it? Please tell me anything you may know or any advice. Thanks
----------

If she's had that many, she may have epilepsy, which effects about 1/100 people. So it's actually the most common neurological problem. There ARE treatments and many people that have epilepsy as a child grow out of it by puberty or by adulthood. I didn't, but I'm still doing ok. :-)  (+ info)

What could be going on that's causing students in my school to be having seizures?

Well, the bizarre part is that in 2 school days, 3 different students have had seizures, two in one day, and one today. It's very weird for these all to be happening at once, what are your opinions?
----------

you would really have to first find out if any of these students have had seizures before ...
if they have then .. yes coincidence
if not .. that's pretty weird and I would bring that to someones attention ASAP  (+ info)

Can seizures be mistaken for add or bipolar?

I've been diagnosed with add for like 7 years and bipolar for one. I took the meds and they never worked. Now I get an eeg and they say my brain doesn't work correctly and I have seizure activity in my brain. Could my add and bipolar really be seizures? I do remember having minor seizures as a kid and now I'm starting to get more complex seizures. I am wondering if my psychological problems are really nuerological?
----------

It does mess with your brain chemistry. It can have a bit to do with psychological problems, but (depending on the severity) they may be totally separate. I know people think that I'm a drug addict when I go out in public because I have myoclonic jerks with my epilepsy and it looks like I get random jerking moves and shakes. It just depends.  (+ info)

How soon after stopping tramadol can you start taking SSRI's (lexapro) , without the risk of seizures?

I was on Lexapro, but had to stop taking it due to pain issues where I had to start taking tramadol. Was advised not to take these two together because of the risk of seizures. Now, I am severely depressed and I want to get back on SSRI's right away. Does anybody know how long I must wait once I stop taking the tramadol?
----------

have a 3 day washout period to be safe (probably don't need quite that long) and then commence your lexapro  (+ info)

What type of diseases cause seizures under extreme stress?

I know someone who gets seizures every time he gets angry,
AVM maybe? He won't get tested.
----------

Epilepsy can be affected by stress, among other things, and result in increased seizures. Also some psychiatric meds also lower the seizure threshhod, like Wellbutrin, and can lead to increased frequency of seizures. Additionally, withdrawal from benzodiazepines (anxiolytic withdrawal) can cause seizures if high doses are stopped abruptly.
Another purely psychiatric disorder, called Somatoform Disorder, may have psychogenic seizures as a component. These seizures are not epileptic and are purely psychological, but are not faked. They look just like epileptic seizures but there are no abnormal EEG's and they can only be distinguished from epileptic seizures via EEG's and testing by a neurologist. (Trust me here-I had a very large client fall on me during one once and we discovered they were psychogenic only after we sent her for a neuro eval at a specialized clinic for seizures) They are actually dissociative symptoms and represent a response to traumatic events initially, but become triggered by intense emotional experiences later. There is usually amnesia for the events prior to the seizure and during it and there is no aura.  (+ info)

seizures only while asleep. Why am I tired when awake with slurred speech and tired and cold all the time?

I have cerebral pulsy. I am 49 and I have been diagnosed with seizures. I am told only while I sleep. Is this why I have slurred speech, sluggish, and cold all of the time.
----------

Do you have slurred speech only when you wake up, or is it slurred all the time?
Do you take medication for the seizures?
You may be cold because you need to move around more. Even I get cold if I'm not active enough, and I'm not burdened with a physical disorder like you.
I can't address the sluggishness; sorry.  (+ info)

How to talk to kids about seizures?

I have seizures which are going to become more frequent in the future. I'm worried about how this will affect my brothers who are 9 and 12. Do you have any advice about how much is appropriate to tell them or how to reassure them that I'm okay?
----------

I was 8 when my dad and brother (who was 9) were both diagnosed with brain tumors. They had seizures all the time. It really scared me at first but after seeing the seizures and having them explained to me, I knew what was going on. They also told me things to do in the event one occured. I learned to dial 911 and explain the situation, I learned never to touch them during a seizure and so on. It's going to be scary to them at first, but you will have to explain it to them the best you can. Good luck darlin!  (+ info)
