Is it okay to go into a hot tub if you have sciatica?

My boyfriend has sciatica but is not currently under a doctor's care (no insurance). Is it okay for him to go into a hot tub? I've read it both ways. From what I gather, it's okay to do as long as it's not too long, and you should also make sure you should have as much cold time (a nice swim or cool shower). Any advice is appreciated.
----------

Yes is o.k to get in tub, but after that have him put ice on it. I had sciatica and had to go to chiropractor and he got it back to as normal as can be and I was told to ice it 3 to 4 times a day as ice works best.
heat makes it feel good but swells the area after you take it off and the blood flow moves slower. so using ice makes the blood flow thru faster.
so of he does the tub have him ice it after wards. also have him lay on his back and lift the side of the leg that hurts up to his chin and strtch it out as many times a day as he can do it, it helps.   (+ info)

Does anyone know of a Brisbane surgeon using keyhole surgery to fix sciatica?

Apparently there was a thing on Channel 7 news around February 2009 which mentioned an orthopaedic surgeon who performed successful keyhole surgery for bad cases of sciatica. It would be great if someone knows who the doctor is and/or where they practise their practice :-)
Thanks Doug, but not what I was asking :-) It's for my dad and he has fused discs (I think that's the terminology) and the stretching does nothing.

Is Fish oil good for Sciatica OR What is?

I've had it for nearly 3 weeks now and I've heard the MANY benefits of Sciatica, being Fish Oil......

I'm already on medications, so it would be great if you could provide a link!

Thanks so much!
----------

the BEST thing is to find out WHAT is causing the sciatica;; sciatica is a symptom, not a diagnosis;; gotta find out what is impinging the nerve, then you can actually treat it;; so, if your doc or you are unwilling to go thru the necessary tests to show you what is happening to your spine, or hip, then you shall continue to seek treatments for the symptoms instead of cures for the cause;; & fish oil is not a cure all, neither is pain meds...  (+ info)

Should I see a chiropractor for Sciatica pain?

I have had sciatica for several years but it only acts up occasionally.
About a month ago I started having lower back pain (probably from riding my motorcycle) so I started seeing a chiropractor. While the lower back muscle pain has improved, I have had sciatic pain for about a week.
----------

I developed a bulging disc between lumbar 4 and 5 by running too much on the jogging trail. I'll tell you what I did. You'll have to decide what is applicable in your case. If you go to a chiropractor, get one that has experience in active release treatment which is very good for treating sciatic conditions. Here's more things that I've tried.

1) My chiropractor recommended taking daily doses of 100 mg. of Vitamin B6.It strenghthens nerves. I noticed an improvement in 4 to 6 weeks.

2) Aleve is a good NSAID medication that is sold over the counter.
The doctor can prescribe a stronger form of the drug in the name Naproxen. The doctor can also prescribe Tramadol which is a narcotic and good pain reliever.

3) The lunge exercise is good for sciatic conditions.
An example is at the bottom of this site:

4) I bought the Teeter inversion table. You can invert yourself partially
or completely for spine decompression. It feels great.
It costs a few hundred but I like it.

5) Back ice packs (they connect with velcro) you can buy them at most pharmacies
-- example at the site below:

6) I purchased the Rebuilder 2407 Electronic Stimulator (information at the site below). This product was intended for a variety of ailments including nerve damage due to diabetes but I found it helpful when the electrical attachments are placed slightly to the right and left of the spine where the bulging disk occurs. In my case, just slightly lower than waist level to the right and left of the spine. They want $699 for this, so it's something to consider even though it's a little
expensive. I bought the more expensive model since it had the AC adapter associated with it rather than just the battery (and so it supplies more power). It definitely makes you feel good when you use it at 7.83 Hz.

Should I pursue a relationship with someone who has just been diagnosed with sciatica?

I have had a crush on this guy for 6 months and he has been crushing on me to. Problem we were really shy and a language barrier was present. After about 5 months he developed sciatica. I still like him and now I have simply turned my fantasies to me helping him and caring for him. What is the reality of dating someone with this terribly painful problem? Also if any of you were going through this would you want to be in a new relationship?
----------

never let anything stand in the way of love. It may be horrible and difficult but if it's real it's worth it....however, that being said. Get to know him better, be his friend and make sure it's love before you commit to such a trying relationship  (+ info)

Can sciatica pain be in the top of my thighs?

I have sciatica problems. All my doctor is doing for it right now is muscle relaxers and we're going to start some physical therapy soon.
I have new pain in the top part of my thighs. I'm used to my butt and legs hurting, but not this part of my thighs. Can that be a result from the sciatica?
It's worse in one leg than the other.
----------

I'm assuming you mean on the FRONT of the thighs. Although technically not sciatica because it's not the sciatic nerve, the femoral nerve can give this presentation. It can occur in much the same manner as sciatica, but it's just a different nerve.

If you mean the back of the thighs, yes this can occur anywhere along the course of the sciatic nerve. If your legs are feeling better, but now it's just the top of the thigh that hurts, this is a sign of improvement. The closer the pain moves towards the spine, the better the indicator of a good recovery. This is called the centralization phenomenon and is a well documented predictor of good outcomes.

The muscle relaxers will not help...go to PT if it does not resolve on it's own.

You do not necessarily need any diagnostic imaging at this time. A good physical exam is just as valuable as an MRI unless you have had a history of cancer, are under the age of 18, over the age of 65, have had a recent trauma, cannot urniate, or are demonstrating significant neuological deficits.  (+ info)

I have sciatica and I was prescribed Soma. What is Soma and what does it do?

I am in horrible pain from sciatica. My doctor prescribed my Naproxen and Soma. I know what Naproxen is (aleve), but I don't have a clue what Soma is. Please elaborate for me. What is Soma? What does it do? Will it help with my sciatica?
----------

Soma is a muscle relaxer that works by blocking pain sensations between the nerves and the brain. Soma is used together with rest and physical therapy to treat injuries and other painful musculoskeletal conditions. The combination of the two will help a lot. Please watch out for side effects from naproxen like swelling of your hands and feet. If you do develop this stop taking and call your doctor to change medication. Yes this should help.  (+ info)

Has anyone ever had to deal with problem with the sciatica nerve?

Has anyone ever had a problem with the sciatica nerve? If so how what was done to heal it? What medication was recommended did they work? Any other treatment that was beneficial? Please only serious answers no monkeying around!
----------

Seriously, I had a ruptured disc. Messed with chiro, injections, then surgery really helped.

The nerve was pinched through all this, I still have some numbness down my leg and side of my foot but my back feels better, no more cramping of muscles in back and buttocks.  (+ info)
