I work in mental health.

Schizotypal Personality Disorder is when someone has a fixed pattern of withdrawn behavior and unusual beliefs not common to their culture like belief in magic, predicting the future, etc.

Sometimes SPD may be an early form of Schizophrenia, because the individual may later develop full symptoms of Schizophrenia.

People with SPD often have relatives who have Schizophrenia.

Sometimes, it can be very difficult to tell the difference between Schizotypal Personality Disorder and types of Autism.

That's what I know about it.  (+ info)

What's the difference between Schizo-Affective Disorder & Schizotypal Personality DIsorder?

Schizoaffective disorder is caused by chemicals in the brain and includes symptoms of psychosis as well as extreme mood swing. Schizotypal personality disorder is an engrained part of someone's personality usually caused by childhood issues and is more likely a learned behavior. It will not respond to medications.  (+ info)

What do these symptoms of schizotypal personality disorder mean?

obsessive ruminations without inner resistance, often with dysmorphophobic, sexual or aggressive contents;
(h) vague, circumstantial, metaphorical, overelaborate, or stereotyped thinking, manifested by odd speech or in other ways, without gross incoherence;
----------

Ruminations is negative cyclic thinking, persistent and recurrent worrying or brooding. The content of this cyclic thinking could be concerns about an imagined or minor defect in physical features (dysmorphophobic), or it could be sexual or violent/bizarre.

As for odd speech, this means that you are able to carry on a conversation (no gross incoherence), but you might have trouble staying on topic, topic associations might be far fetched, you ramble on about a specific topic or your opinions or observations on a topic are stereotyped and difficult to argue with.  (+ info)

schizoid and schizotypal personality disorder?

ive been a bit mental for a while lol ive been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years now and ive just been diagnosed with 2 personality disorders! this really confuses me though! how can i have 2 personality disorders? my psych said i have schizoid and schizotypal and he did explain fairly well what it meant but i was just wondering if anybody can share their experiences with this! also how can i have 2 personality disorders?
----------

Personality disorders are just normal personality traits taken to an unhealthy extreme. Since each Disorder concentrates on a handful of traits it is possible to have multiple disorders if you have multiple traits taken to extremes..... Schizoid is about wanting to be left alone (basically), not havign a desire for relationships..... Schizotypal is typified by having odd beliefs and mannerisms...... You can easily have both.

I am Schizoid and Paranoid. And Bipolar and DID NOS, and I have PTSD....... Multiple diagnoses is the name of the game these days.....  (+ info)

Is Schizotypal Personality Disorder mild Schizophrenia?

Is it a personality disorder or schizophrenia light?
----------

That depends on where you live.

In America (according to the DSM-IV), it is a personality disorder; in the rest of the world (according to ICD-10) it is a disorder on the schizophrenic spectrum.

Although the ICD-10 diagnostic criteria for schizotypal disorder differ in detail from the DSM-IV criteria for schizotypal personality disorder, they define essentially the same condition. ICD-10 does not consider the disorder to be a personality disorder, and it classes it with schizophrenia, schizotypal and delusional disorders.  (+ info)

Can you receive Social Security Check for having Schizoid Personality disorder or Schizotypal?

Well that depends. Technically the mental health diagnosis must be on Axis I and many on Axis II (the place Personality Disorder are classified) do not get SSI. I know this because I once had a client with a personality disorder and he tried to get SSI and could not. But try anyway, all they can do is turn you down. And they often turn everyone down the first time. It takes a long time to get on it.  (+ info)

Anyone with schizotypal personality disorder - personally what are your main symptoms and difficulties? ?

Are you out of work and what do you fill your time with. Are you on antipsychotics or antidepressants?
----------

My boyfriend of 3 years has this ... and some other things.
hes 33.
He works. You just have to find a place where you feel safe and where any eccentricities of belief or behavior will not be on center stage and where others wont discriminate or taunt you for them. He works in sales at an auto place. Sometimes its uncomfortable for him but hes been there 6 years so its familiar and he can do a good job of "acting" normal for work when need be.
He just got on anti psychotics... but like I said they are still trying to diagnose him for sure if he has more going on that just this so Im not sure what they are giving him the anti psychotics for exactly.

When hes not at work he plays online games like warcraft etc. Or looks up information on star wars. Another of his fantasy interests. And that's about it. Work, computer games, bed.

symptoms

*Incorrect interpretation of events, including feeling that external events have personal meaning
ie-he sees codes in license plates -for example

Peculiar thinking, beliefs or behavior
Belief in special powers, such as telepathy
-he would be considered "weird or odd" by most. He does think sometimes that he can control events or others. Like trying to make other cars on the road do what he wants them to or change intersection lights etc

Perceptual alterations, in some cases bodily illusions, including phantom pains or other distortions in the sense of touch
-he doesnt like to be touched...even by me if I surprise him.. but just generally not interested. He feels water rushing over his hands, bugs, falling sensations that start in his leg and go to his face etc

Idiosyncratic speech, such as loose or vague patterns of speaking or tendency to go off on tangents
- not so sever I can not follow it. Some others cant but I tend to do this myself and I know him well enough to know the movies inside jokes etc that hes alluding to that would be obscure to the general public.

Suspicious or paranoid ideas
-hes moved in the past because he thought everyone was plotting against him. He worrys that others might hear his thoughts or are against him...this happens at work sometimes but usually he can deal with it especially if we talk about it.

Flat emotions or inappropriate emotional responses
-hes not very affectionate. Not open with his feelings. Not very emotionally expressive. Not much for intimacy even less for sex... much like Schizoid in this respect.

Lack of close friends outside of the immediate family
exception to the rule here. He has a girlfriend. And no one else. No family friends anything but me. But Im odd myself and though I do miss intimacy... Ive come to know how great a person he is and am very tolerant and understanding

Persistent and excessive social anxiety that doesn't abate with time
He dislikes others. He is afraid of others due to parinoa mostly if he is afraid of them not due to low self esteem etc. He just doesnt see a point to relationships with others.  (+ info)
