Are there different types of scarlet fever, or is it just not considered as serious now?

When I had scarlet fever back in the '50's I was taken by ambulence to an isolation hospital. I spent 3 months there and never saw anyone except a nurse, one at a time, and had an occasional visit by a doctor. After returning home it was another month before being allowed back to school.
Nowadays, children are treated at home, not kept away from other family members, and back at school in a couple of weeks.
----------

There is only the one type (same as you had in the 50's)
It was a serious disease then and as you say, you were isolated
There is no such thing nowadays as an isolation hospital!
I trained as a fever nurse in one of those!
Sulphonamides were used to treat it then, but now they use penicillin.

Does anyone know how to stop the itching from scarlet fever?

My 7 year old daughter has been diagonosed with scarlet fever and the itching is unbearable and benedryl isn,t working?HELP!!!
----------

Therapy is designed to treat the infection with antibiotics (usually penicillin) and relieve symptoms with analgesics (such as calmine lotion or other types of serine lotions), rest, and plenty of fluids. Scarlet fever is usually not a serious illness when treated promptly. Improvement typically begins within 24 hours of starting treatment.

Your doctor should have perscribed some sort of analegesic to assist her recovery. If he did not in-fact, Children Tylenol, Motrin or anything that releves pain would help a great deal. As I mentioned above, plenty of fluids and rest. A nice luke warm (not scolding or cold) bath can help as well in some cases. Good luck!  (+ info)

how long until your child can return to school after being diagnosed with Scarlet Fever and start antibiotics?

We have just started antibiotics this morning right after my nine year old daughter was diagnosed with Scarlet Fever. They just never told me how long to wait until she can go back to school. Today is Tuesday and just started with her medication but she has a speech to do that she is looking forward to doing on Thursday, will she be able to go to school tommorrow or even Thursday?
----------

Please, talk to your daughter's doctor, before you send her to school. Scarlet fever can put scarring around the heart, so, you really want to be really certain it is not too soon to send her back to school, already. If you give her vitamin E capsules, daily, she will be able to have her body fight off any scarring around the heart, that Scarlet fever causes, as well.  (+ info)

My friend just informed me that her daughter has Scarlet Fever, what are the chances of catching it?

I spent a few minutes with the child today but not really close contact, my son was also in the same room.
----------

Scarlet fever is strep throat with a rash. It's very contagious, being spread by nasal and throat fluids by sneezing and coughing, and if a skin infection caused by strep bacteria is present, it can be passed through contact with the skin. You shouldn't get sick, it depends on how susceptible you are to strep throat. I can get it by being in the same room as someone, but my dad has never had it. It sounds like you didn't really have a chance to get infected, but if you or your son start to get the symptoms call the doctor because left untreated strep throat/scarlet fever will cause rheumatoid heart problems later in life.  (+ info)

How serious is scarlet fever?

My sons preschool sent a letter home today saying that scarlet fever is going around. How serious is it, and what signs and symptoms should I watch for.
----------

Scarlet fever is strep throat with a rash.. no more...no less..
what parents would need to be concerned about is the progression of strep turning into rheumatic fever. So if your sons presents w/ a fever sore throat and a rash go to your doctor. Good luck.  (+ info)
