How to prevent the worsening of Scabies?

I shook hands with a person who has scabies before I knew they had it on their other hand. I was wondering how do I take precautions to prevent the worsening of the disease on me. I shook their hand today so I guess u can say that the physical contact was today. Help, I'm gettin' all panicky! I dont want to infect my family and dogs at home. What can I do to prevent the burrowing and other things that occur when you get scabies. Also, I have not started itching yet. I knw itching occurs a few weeks later. Please help, Thanks!

You have to wait and see if you develop any symptoms, as you might not have it. I don't think a Dr. will prescribe you the lotion/medicine until then. To be on the safe side, you should sleep in different beds and not come in physical contact with anyone untill you are satisfied....hope this helps....good luck.. ;)  (+ info)

How do I get my scabies back?

I really miss scratching myself and thinking I would never be cured of it. Now that it's gone I don't feel as special. Should I just put in ad in the personals, "Attn: girls with scabies..."
Yes, the hot shower on my skin felt like a thousand sun spots bursting on my body.

Most definitely you need to get a life back instead of wasting people's time with idiotic statements in this forum.  (+ info)

Is it possible to have Scabies for a long period of time without any visible symptoms?

I have been itching all over my body for the past 4 months. I went to the doctor and they told me it was just really bad dry skin. I have tried all the soaps, oils and creams I can find and I still itch very bad. My brother and sister who I lived with over the summer have now started to itch and they have been told it could be scabies. I have no red spots or rashes. I have thought that if I have had it for this long, I would start to see something.
----------

It's possible but highly unlikely. Scabies leaves a very distinctive red rash and most often you can actually make out the lines through which the mite has burrowed under the skin. I would suggest visiting your doctor and insist on having skin scrapings sent for scabies testing. To be done properly, the physician must put a drop of mineral oil on the skin at an infected/rashed site and on a glass microscope slide. He must then scrape the skin quite hard to remove skin cells with a razer blade. The material he scrapes off should be put directly onto the microscope slide. Ideally, the scraping should be hard enough to cause the skin to bleed. Your doctor will send the sample to a parasitology laboratory to be examined for ectoparasites (which includes scabies exam). In my experience of 22 years as a medical microbiologist with a subspecialty in parasitology, most doctors wouldn't recognize scabies or the accompanying rash if it hit them in the face! Conversely, most Dr's who do diagnose a rash on site as Scabies are usually wrong and it is usually impetigo. That's why i recommend that you insist on proper testing.

Good luck and I wish you well.  (+ info)

Can scabies be spread by swimming pool water?

I was just wondering if you can catch scabies by swimming in a pool with someone who has it.
----------

"Scabies is spread by prolonged skin-to-skin contact with a person who has scabies. Scabies sometimes also can be spread by contact with items such as clothing, bedding, or towels that have been used by a person with scabies, but such spread is very uncommon unless the infested person has crusted (Norwegian) scabies.

Scabies is very unlikely to be spread by water in a swimming pool. Except for a person with crusted (Norwegian) scabies, only about 10-15 scabies mites are present on an infested person; it is extremely unlikely that any would emerge from under wet skin.

Although uncommon, scabies can be spread by sharing a towel or item of clothing that has been used by a person with scabies."

Hope this helps!  (+ info)

I would take this to human resources if the company is big enough. Check with YOUR local state employement office.  (+ info)

Hi,

You MAY have not have eliminated the mites in your house, or sealed any loose ones on your mattress within a nylon zipper bag, or it may be something else.

IF I may be wrong - I am always impressed that there is oftentimes some good advice and good links from people helping others through Yahoo_Answers.

Although I have learned a-lot after doing considerable research via the internet about my own diseased-liver that has eventually ‘allowed’ allergic reactions to many many triggers, please consider that it is more likely than not >>=> that a WRONG medical diagnosis will be made by listening to the advice of novices via Yahoo_Answers.

Sooo I would strongly encourage you to become a ‘good’ diagnostician for yourself, and to also seek out a 'good' doctor or a ‘good’ nurse and s/he will make a medical diagnosis and thoroughly explain the causes preventions and solutions much better than anyone on Yahoo_Answers could do without being able to see you personally.

My best to you,
A1
