Why is allergic rhinitis also called hay fever?

Allergic rhinitis is also called hay fever even though it is not accompanied by fever. WHY? :)
"Hay fever" was the original folk name given to it because it was at the time to harvest the hay (late May to the end of June) in Europe (for feeding cattle) it was then that people had the symptoms. Latter on in became obvious that the pollen from several flowers was involved so it took the name pollinosis. Anyway, someone i know has allergic rhinitis and was prescribed 3 prednisolone tablets per week. when do they start to help? its the second day and there was no improvement yet.
25mg, 3 tablets in the morning, once a week.

Steroids are dangerous for long term use, and should not be used for allergic rhinitis.

Allergic Rhinitis is just a fancy name for hay fever (I suffer too !) - Hay fever is an allergic reaction to pollen - nothing to do with pizza !

My 2yr old son has allergic rhinitis symptons. what causes this and what medicine can I give?

From week one after birth his breathing has been heavy and labouring and has a running nose all year round. He tends to get really ill with cold/ flu.This summer his eyes waters, has itchy eyes and noses, snores all through the day. His eyes have turned brown. the left eyes does turn red very often and also swells up now and then. I have tried cetrizine but it has so far not been effective. Are there any other options?
your child is having respiratory allergy ,usually caused by pollution ,you can try these methods .
1] If infection is cause - give appropiate antibiotcs.[amoxicilline is best]
2] use saline nose drops-orivin -s nasal drops
3] If nose is blocked use sometime -otrinose -p nose drop.
4] use duanase nasal drop for allergic rhinitis for short duration.
5]use budacort0.5mg rspules by nebuliser daily once for 15 days.
6] give orally allegra syrup 5ml bd for 15 days.
7] if you have dogs,cats parrots etc keep them away.
8] Keep smoker friends and relatives away.
9] donot use perfumes,mosquito repellent etc.
10] if possible change place of residence.

I don't want to take a medicine that will make matters worse...
Cheapest is Chlor-Trimeton. Next is Benadryl. Both cause drowsiness. Best Non Drowsy OTC is Loratidine Hcl, the medicine in Claritin. Non Drowsy and works great. Wal Mart has a great Equate brand that is cheap.  (+ info)

I've been suffering from the illness for more than five years already. Right now my sense of smell does not function. I have consulted so many specialists but not one of them had given me an effective prescription.
i have had allergic rhinitis since i was born...im 19 now. I have been taking allergy shots for about 2 1/2 years and its helping some... Right now i am feeling really really bad...i have taken Allegra, Flonase and Benydral all at the same time and nothing is helping me. I have tried different medicines, they don't work (Sudafen, Sinutab, etc). I am now addicted to otrivine. It's becoming ridiculous.
I sympathise with you, because as you have discovered - all these medications can have a rebound effect when you have used them for a long time.
I suggest you see an Ear Nose & Throat surgeon who will check whether or not you have an underlying infection and/or abnormality of the sinus cavities (you may have something like a benign polyp for example).
Ask you doctor if he can refer you to an allergist who will be able to de-sensitise you by firstly finding out what you are allergic to and then giving you minute amounts of the allergen by regular injections over a period of time.
I was de-sensitised against house-dust mite years ago and have never had a problem since.  (+ info)
