Question for those who have had a retinal detachment?

If you saw a shadow in the corner of your vision, did the shadow every move? Could you move it as if it were a floater? Was it always there? Could you see it both indoors and outdoors?
----------

A retinal detachment can cause devastating damage to the vision if left untreated. It is considered an ocular emergency that requires immediate medical attention and surgery. If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, I suggest you be seen right away.

-Light flashes
-“Wavy,” or “watery” vision
-Veil or curtain obstructing vision
-Shower of floaters that resemble spots, bugs, or spider webs
-Sudden decrease of vision

Good luck!  (+ info)

is it normal to see floaters during exercise? is it a sign of retinal detachment?

i never used to see floaters; but recently i'm beginning to see them.
----------

are you only seeing them when you exercise? do you get slightly dizzy when you get them? if so its most likely that they aren't floaters. its probably just that you have low blood pressure and when you exsert yourself you start to black out a bit. you should make an appointment with your regular doctor.

if you are seeing floaters all the time (not just during exercise) it could be a sign of retinal detachment. you shoudl make an appointment with our eye doctor if thats the case.  (+ info)

How long is the recovery for gas treatment for retinal detachment?

it depends on what gases are used in the gas bubble.
i had 2 retinal detachments with in 6 weeks of each other. the first time the gas bubble lasted about 13 days and was completely gone.
the second time they used a longer lasting gas so my eye would have more time to fully heal. that gas bubble lasted about 21 days before it was completely gone.

and i hate to upset you but i've got to say that having to keep my head down 24/7 for the first week the first time and first two weeks the second time was pretty much the worst experience of my life.  (+ info)

Has anyone else ever had a retinal eye detachment?

i had one when i was 16 and i had to get a scleral buckle put in.....it was possibly the most painful thing ive ever had to go through. i was just trying to find other people who had to go through this like i did.
----------

Hey! I am 21 and I have had seven retinal detachment surgeries with cataracts also. I had scleral buckling in both eyes as well. It has been the worst experience of my life!!! I am now legally blind because there was a lot of damage done to my retinas and optic nerves. All of this happened in the past year. My detachments were found on accident and my right eye was already detached from the macula.

What's your story? You can message me if you want and i'll tell you alllll the "fun" details! :-)  (+ info)

What sort of tests to does the optician have to carry out to check for retinal detachment?

well first of all you wouldn't go to an optician if you think you have a detached retina. you need to see an ophthalmologist that specializes in retinal detachment.

the DR. will ask you a few questions about your vision and any changes you've notice recently. he/she may have you watch a short video on retinal detachments and floaters.
they will dialate your eyes with eye drops so he/she can see into the back part of your eye better. (where the retina is)
the DR would look for a tear in the retina and will use a light and a magnafier to see closer and more clearly (if your eyes are sensative to light this is the worst part of the examination) and then they would do an ultrasound of your eye. its just like an ultrasound pregnant women get. there is a wand and the jelly comes out onto your eye lid (your eye will be closed) and they will ask you to move your eye in different directions so they can see where the detachment is.

if the DR finds a tear/detachment you will need to have surgery with in a few days.  (+ info)

Is there Anything I can do to Help Prevent Retinal Detachment?

I am only 21 years old. I am extremely near sighted (-13.00), have been all my life. At my last check-up,a few small holes were noticed in my retina. I know retinal dettachment is a big risk now.
What can I do to help prevent it???
----------

Did you have the holes treated? A lot of times an ophthalmologist will just laser around them, which essential welds your retina into place. Other than that, try to avoid any head trauma.  (+ info)

What is Horseshoe retinal tear ? Is it related to retinal detachment ?

What is Horseshoe retinal tear ? Is it related to retinal detachment ?

Will be danger ? My doctor said that i have horseshoe tear and has to do LASER surgery.

Now i am fearing of side effects of LASER surgery.

Please suggest me >> What to do ??

Please reply me soon ..
----------

Yes, it's basically a tear in the retina that is U shaped - if left it can progress to a larger retinal detachment so laser is used to seal the edges.

The risk of the laser op is well worth it in these cases as the risk of a serious retinal detachment is more.  (+ info)

how long does it take to lose eye sight through retinal detachment through direct trauma?

sciency question (but non - sciency description of the question), anyhow, i was just wondering since.... i think i have it.
----------

If you indeed have a retinal detachment, vision is unrecoverable within 20 minutes of the injury. Depending on what part of the retinal is damaged, you may or may not notice vision loss since the acute vision center is located in the fovea of the eye which accounts for less than 5% of the total surface area of the retina. If untreated the retinal detachment can continue to tear and may eventually affect the entire eye and will result in permanent vision loss. If you suspect that your recent injury may have caused a retinal detachment (symptoms would be excessive floaters and flashes of light longer than 15 minutes), then you need to see a retinal specialist asap. The longer you wait, the higher the risk for a poor prognosis.  (+ info)

Should I continue to play H.S. soccer if I have retinal tears, high myopia, and risk for retinal detachment?

I'm worried that if I continue heading the ball that might affect my vision in the long term; also i've heard that direct impact w/ the ball to the globe (or main part) of the eye can cause retinal detachment and/or blindness. Should I keep playing? The only thing is that playing a varsity sport looks good on a college application. but i guess my health is more important.

thoughts?
----------

If you care about your vision, it would be a good idea to stop playing soccer, or at least talk to your coach and see if you can still play while avoiding heading the ball - this is a little bit easier if you play in a defensive position. Varsity sports make almost no difference in getting accepted to a college unless you want to go to one of the US military colleges or an ivy league school.   (+ info)
